Planning for work: Exploring the relationship between contraceptive use and women's sector-specific employment in India.

While the health-related benefits of contraceptive use for women are well documented, potential social benefits, including enabling women's employment, have not been well researched. We examine the relationship between contraceptive use and women's employment in India, a country where both factors have remained relatively static over the past ten years. We use data from India's 2015-16 National Family Health Survey to test the association between current contraceptive use (none, sterilization, IUD, condom, pill, rhythm method or withdrawal) and current employment status (none, professional, cl…

Change in employment status and cocaine use treatment outcomes: A secondary analysis across six clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Unemployment is a chronic problem among treatment seeking substance users and is associated with poor treatment response. Most studies that have examined the relationship between employment and treatment outcomes for substance use disorders have done so by considering employment at only one specific point in time (e.g., upon entering treatment). There is a lack of research on how change in employment status over time is associated with substance use treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate both static employment status and change in employment status over time as p…

Clinical Observation of Employment of Umbilical Cord Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell for Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Therapy.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), known as Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, is the most common type of arthritis in children aged under 17. It may cause sequelae due to lack of effective treatment. The goal of this study is to explore the therapeutic effect of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) for JIA. Ten JIA patients were treated with UC-MSCs and received second infusion three months later. Some key values such as 28-joint disease activity score (DAS28), TNF-α, IL-6, and regulatory T cells (Tregs) were evaluated. Data were collected at 3 months and 6 months after first treatme

Health and well-being of homeless veterans participating in transitional and supported employment: Six-month outcomes.

Supported employment, specifically individual placement and support (IPS), improves competitive employment (CE) rates for individuals with serious mental illness, but has not shown greater improvement in non-vocational outcomes than other rehabilitation approaches. The Department of Veterans Affairs offers two types of vocational services, IPS and transitional work experience (TWE), but no study has compared the effectiveness of these approaches. This secondary analysis of data from a study of homeless veterans compared 6 mo improvement in diverse outcomes for five employment patterns: never w…

Influence of liver-disease etiology on long-term quality of life and employment after liver transplantation.

The etiology of liver disease would expectedly affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and employment after liver transplantation (LT), but studies are scarce. We sent the 15D HRQoL instrument and an employment questionnaire to all 401 adult LT patients alive in Finland in 2007. The response rate was 89% (n = 353; mean of eight yr since LT). In age-adjusted analysis, patients transplanted for primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC; n = 56), primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC; n = 72), acute liver failure (ALF; n = 76), alcoholic cirrhosis (n = 38), or liver tumor (n = 22) exhibited comparable H…

As individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities become more engaged in community employment, it will be critical to consider how their employment experience changes as they age. Similar to other seniors, individuals will need to consider whether they want to maintain their employment, reduce their work commitment, or retire completely. If they do choose to retire, what activities will they choose to engage in, and what service or supports might be necessary? This article considers the issues faced by all aging workers in regard to retirement planning and active aging as well as…

Person-related predictors of employment outcomes after participation in psychiatric vocational rehabilitation programmes--a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing recognition of the importance of psychiatric vocational rehabilitation (PVR) programmes in helping individuals with severe mental illnesses to find and secure jobs. However, little is known concerning the factors related to PVR outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This review identifies those person-related factors which most strongly influence employment outcomes after participation in PVR programmes. METHOD: Medline, Psychinfo, Pubmed and CINAHL were searched for studies using multivariate analysis of longitudinal data, which analysed employment outcomes after at least 6 mo…

Future employment among homeless single mothers: the effects of full-time work experience and depressive symptomatology.

This study examines the relationship between work and depressive symptomatology for extremely destitute single mothers-mothers who have experienced an episode of homelessness. Using longitudinal data collected from 294 respondents who became homeless in 1992 and were followed for approximately two years, we find that a history of full-time work is the best predictor of whether a woman will find full-time employment in the aftermath of an episode of homelessness. Even an extensive history of part-time or informal work was not predictive of finding employment after leaving a homeless shelter. A …

[PASS: a community, system-related program for occupational rehabilitation of chronic psychiatric patients in competitive employment].

Notwithstanding considerable success, the concepts currently applied by vocational rehabilitation workshops for persons with chronic mental illness are deemed open to criticism in some respects. Presented is the PASS programme, developed on the basis of more than two decades of experience with the clinic's own rehabilitation workshop. The greater part of the five-phase programme no longer occurs within the workshop but is spent at training workplaces with regional firms. A mobile rehabilitation team does not only support the patients at their training facilities but also their colleagues and i
