Tunneling of Elastic Waves in a Tapered Waveguide.

Understanding how evanescent modes mediate energy transfer in tapered elastic waveguides is of paramount interest, as it unlocks new strategies for wave control and manipulation. Evanescent modes play a crucial role in energy localization and in the emergence of thickness resonances. We report the first unambiguous experimental evidence of Lamb mode tunneling near turning points, revealing how energy can traverse an evanescent barrier and recover its propagative nature after a finite transit time. Focusing on waveguides with linearly varying thickness, we show that the S_{2} mode becomes evane…

Recoding by N1-methylpseudouridine guides rational mRNA vaccine design.

N1-methylpseudouridine (m1Ψ) is a key modification used in SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines that reduces immunogenicity and increases mRNA stability. Recent studies suggested that m1Ψ can promote ribosomal frameshifting, a translational error generating aberrant peptides that elicit immune responses, raising concerns about unintended antigenicity. Here, we systematically examined the efficiency of frameshifting induced by m1Ψ and the underlying mechanism, aiming to inform future mRNA vaccine design. Using mRNA-based dual-fluorescence reporters in cells, fully in vitro reconstituted translation system,

Refractory organic wastewater treatment via thermal activation of molecular oxygen on a confined Al2O3@Cu catalyst.

Catalytic air oxidation of refractory organic wastewater often faces limitations such as low efficiency and high energy consumption. Herein, by encapsulating size-tuned copper nanoparticles (NPs) within porous Al2O3 and finely optimizing the associated Cu(I)/Cu(II) ratio, we realized a catalytic mechanism that synergistically leveraged spatial confinement and a low-temperature thermal induction effect (LTIE). Porous-Al2O3-enabled spatial confinement improved surface crystallinity and effectively suppressed copper NPs aggregation. Compared to the high energy required by gas-phase O-O bond homol

How excitation wavelength affects excited state dynamics in o-nitrophenol: A theoretical perspective.

The excited-state dynamics of o-nitrophenol have been explored using trajectory surface hopping nonadiabatic dynamics combined with floating occupation molecular orbital complete active space configuration interaction. We focus on the effect of excitation energy on the subsequent dynamics. The absorption spectrum of o-nitrophenol has two peaks, centered at 3.9 eV (∼320 nm) and 5.1 eV (∼240 nm), and we performed dynamics starting from each of these peaks. The results show that even though the relaxation time constants are similar for the two excitation windows, the underlying dynamics are diffe

Modulating excited state properties of thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules by hybrid long-range and short-range charge transfer strategy.

Balancing the rapid radiative decay process and the fast reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) process of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule remains a great challenge and efficient molecular design strategies are highly desired. Herein, from a theoretical perspective, excited state properties of three reported TADF molecules (1TICz, 1BOICz and 2BOICz) are investigated based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations coupled with the thermal vibration correlation function (TVCF) method. Results indicate that, by intr

Detecting the Conduction Property of Proton Carriers at Different Relative Humidity Based on Postsynthetic MOF Nanosheets.

Exploring the transfer ability of proton carriers at different relative humidity (RH) is vital for the rational design and development of high-performance proton exchange membranes (PEMs). However, the highly humidity-dependent transfer channel and random carrier distribution disqualify most membrane materials. Herein, a series of MIL-53 metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets with stable, quantifiable pore structures and different conducting groups are prepared through postsynthetic ligand exchange, followed by spin coating to assemble lamellar membranes. We demonstrated that proper binding

New magnetic resonance spectroscopy biomarker for monitoring neurodegenerative diseases: animal models.

Creatine kinase (CK) plays a central role in energy transfer in cells with high-energy demands, and the enzyme is rather susceptible to oxidative inactivation. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the rate constant of forward CK reaction (k(for)) is a suitable indicator of alterations in cerebral energy metabolism. We monitored k(for) in the rat brain non-invasively by in vivo phosphorus ((31)P) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). To alter energy metabolism, we applied following experimental models: Huntington's disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic alcohol intoxication and…

Effect of extending conjugation via thiophene-based oligomers on the excited state electron transfer rates to ZnO nanocrystals.

Oligothiophene dyes with two to five thiophene units were anchored to oleate-capped, quantum-confined zinc oxide nanocrystals (ZnO NCs) through a cyanoacrylate functional group. While the fluorescence of the bithiophene derivative was too weak for meaningful quenching studies, the fluorescence of the dyes with three, four and five thiophene rings was quenched upon binding to the NCs. Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy was used to observe the singlet excited states of the free dyes dissolved in dichloromethane as well as attached to a ZnO NC dispersed in the same solvent. When the dyes were boun

Exploration of Spectrodynamic Behavior of a Naphthalene-Based Schiff Base (E)-2-((Naphthalen-1-ylimino)methyl)-4-nitrophenol: Synergistic Effects of ESIPT and Excimers.

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and excimer formation are unimolecular and bimolecular reactions, respectively. It is not frequent to observe coupling between these two excited-state processes. In this work, we have shown the coupling between excimer formation and ESIPT processes in a custom-designed fluorophore (E)-2-((naphthalen-1-ylimino)methyl)-4-nitrophenol (NMNP) in different matrices using steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopic measurements followed by quantum chemical calculations. Extensive spectral analyses of NMNP in different media reveal the

On the comparison of oxygen and sulfur transfer reactivities in phosphine and phosphorene: the case of R3Sb(X) carriers (X = O or S).

Functionalization is one of the most powerful tools in materials science for the development of new and innovative materials with tailored properties purposefully designed to enhance the overall stability of the system. This is particularly true for exfoliated black phosphorus, which suffers from easy decomposition by air and moisture, hampering its highly desirable applications, especially in electronics. The present work suggests an innovative approach to the functionalization process of this 2D-material based on the selective introduction of chalcogen atoms on the material surface through a

From charge transfer to electron transfer in halogen-bonded complexes of electrophilic bromocarbons with halide anions.

Experimental and computational studies of the halogen-bonded complexes, [R-Br, X(-)], of bromosubstituted electrophiles, R-Br, and halide anions, X(-), revealed that decrease of a gap between the frontier orbitals of interacting species led to reduction of the energy of the optical charge-transfer transition and to increase in the ground-state charge transfer (X(-) → R-Br) in their associates. These variations were accompanied by weakening of the intramolecular, C-Br, and strengthening of the intermolecular, BrX(-), bonds. In the limit of the strongest electron donor-acceptor pairs, formation

Acceptor Engineering-Mediated Charge-Transfer Control: A Hierarchical Framework for Predictive Design of High-Performance Type I AIE Photosensitizers.

This study presents a hierarchical multi-parameter framework for designing hypoxia-tolerant Type I aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizers through acceptor engineering. Enhancing electron-withdrawing capacity strengthens intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in singlet excited states (Sn), enabling a direct charge transfer-mediated intersystem crossing (ISC) pathway. Key parameters-favorable singlet-triplet gap (ΔE > 0, thermodynamic prerequisite), low reorganization energy (λ, kinetic driver), and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC, ISC activator)-optimize ISC efficiency, an exception

Combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanics studies of the electron-transfer reactions involving carbon tetrachloride in solution.

The reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride, CCl4, by a concerted electron transfer-bond breaking mechanism was studied using combined high level quantum mechanical and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach. The free energy activation barriers for the first electron-transfer step were determined from the dissociation profiles of CCl4 and *CCl4(-) complexes in aqueous phase using hybrid-free energy QM/MM methodologies. Both density functional and coupled cluster perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) versions of QM/MM methods were investigated. The impact of the implicit solvent description bas

Intermolecular electron transfer from naphthalene derivatives in the higher triplet excited states.

Intermolecular electron transfer (ELT) from a series of naphthalene derivatives (NpD) in the higher triplet excited states (T(n)) to carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) in Ar-saturated acetonitrile was observed using the two-color two-laser flash photolysis method. The ELT efficiency depended on the driving force of ELT. Since the ELT from the T(n) state occurred competitively with the internal conversion (IC, T(n) --> T(1)) and the triplet energy transfer (ENT), the ELT became apparent only when sufficient free energy change of ELT was attained. On the other hand, ELT from the T(1) state was not ob…

Compensatory Intercellular Mitochondrial Transfer Improves Bioenergetics in P301L Tau-Affected Neuronal Cells.

Tauopathies are a group of neurodegenerative diseases characterized by the accumulation of abnormal tau protein, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction. Because of neurons' high energy demands, such impairments significantly contribute to neuronal vulnerability. Recent evidence indicates that mitochondria can be transferred between cells to support energy-deficient cells through intercellular mitochondrial transfer (IMT). Given the impact of pathological tau on mitochondrial transport and cytoskeletal dynamics, we hypothesized that IMT is altered in tauopathies. We investigated IMT from astrocyt

Interlayer sp3 Bonds and Chirality at Bilayer Graphene Oxide/Calcium Silicate Hydrate Abnormally Enhance Its Interlayer Stress Transfer.

Graphene oxide (GO) is an ideal reinforcing material with super design capability, which can achieve the combination of strength and toughness. However, the actual effect of GO is far below the theoretical prediction. This is mainly due to the weak interface between the nanofiller and the matrix. In this paper, a controllable method for improving interlayer stress transfer of double-layer graphene oxide/C-S-H (D-GO-CSH)-layered nanostructures is proposed by using interlayer sp3 bond and chirality. The results show that, compared with the control group, the normalized shear stress and normalize
