Research on substance use disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered changes in the substance use disorder (SUD) treatment delivery system, in the availability of legal and illicit drugs, and in other social and economic factors. As such, these changes necessitate that the field re-evaluate research approaches to SUDs, including in epidemiology, clinical trials, health services, implementation and policy research, as well as basic and translational neuroscience. COVID-19 has reduced researchers' access to target populations and made it difficult for them to obtain timely data to monitor changes in patterns of drug use and ove

Affective and emotional dysregulation as pre-dementia risk markers: exploring the mild behavioral impairment symptoms of depression, anxiety, irritability, and euphoria.

BACKGROUND: Affective and emotional symptoms such as depression, anxiety, euphoria, and irritability are common neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in pre-dementia and cognitively normal older adults. They comprise a domain of Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI), which describes their emergence in later life as an at-risk state for cognitive decline and dementia, and as a potential manifestation of prodromal dementia. This selective scoping review explores the epidemiology and neurobiological links between affective and emotional symptoms, and incident cognitive decline, focusing on recent literature

What can large population-based birth cohort study ask about past, present and future of children with disorders of development, learning and behaviour?

A large cohort consisting of all children born to mothers from community provides 'natural' selection into different exposures and is a powerful resource for epidemiological research. A large population-based birth cohort with detailed systematic information already recorded, as part of longitudinal medical care, historical and current school data, detailed birth certificate data and all three resources available for every member of the birth cohort, are extremely rare. Our population-based birth cohort consists of all children born between 1976 and 2000 to mothers residing in Olmsted County,

Aflatoxins as risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma in humans.

On a global basis, primary liver cancer (PLC) is a very prevalent form of cancer. Wide variation of PLC incidence in different areas of the world suggests the involvement of environmental factors in its etiology. Two major classes of risk factors have been identified. Extensive evidence indicates the importance of infection by the hepatitis B virus as a major risk factor for PLC. Because many organic chemicals induce liver cancer in experimental animals, those to which human exposure is known to occur are also of interest with respect to their possible involvement as risk factors for PLC. Using methods to extend inferences to specific target populations to improve the precision of subgroup analyses.

OBJECTIVES: While subgroup analyses are common in epidemiologic research, restriction to subgroup members can yield imprecise estimates. We aimed to demonstrate how methods extending inferences to external targets improve precision of subgroup estimates under the major assumption effects differ between subgroup members and nonmembers due to measured effect measure modifiers (EMMs) and membership is independent of the effect after conditioning on EMMs. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We applied this approach in the Panitumumab Randomized Trial in Combination with Chemotherapy for Metastatic Colorect

Parapipe: a pipeline for parasite next-generation sequencing data analysis applied to Cryptosporidium.

Cryptosporidium, a protozoan parasite of significant public health concern, is responsible for severe diarrhoeal disease, particularly in immunocompromised individuals and young children in resource-limited settings. Analysis of whole-genome next-generation sequencing (NGS) data is critical in improving our understanding of Cryptosporidium epidemiology, transmission and diversity. However, effective analysis of NGS data in a public health context necessitates the development of robust, validated computational tools. We present Parapipe, an ISO-accreditable bioinformatic pipeline for high-throu

Implication of serum and salivary albumin tests in the recent oral health related epidemiological studies: A narrative review.

Albumin is the most abundant protein in human serum and a specific amount of albumin also can be found in the saliva. It has several physiological functions such as blood colloidal osmotic pressure, antioxidant activity, binding and transporting of endogenous and exogenous substrates. We conducted an electronic search across several databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Embase and Science Direct using the relevant MeSH terms and keywords like "albumin", "serum albumin", "salivary albumin", "oral health" "dental caries" and "epidemiology". Only the epidemiological studies published betwee

A Web-based survey among adults aged 40-54 years was time effective and yielded stable response patterns.

OBJECTIVE: We want to present information about response patterns obtained by Web-based survey in a large-scale epidemiological study. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Within the RAPS (Risk Adapted Prevention Strategies for colorectal cancer [CRC]) study, we invited 160,000 randomly selected persons aged 40-54 years in three large German cities from 2015 to 2016 to complete a Web-based questionnaire on CRC risk factors and screening (97 items, average time for completion 15 minutes). Invitation letters and up to two reminder letters were sent to each individual. RESULTS: A total of 21.4% of women a

Using sexually transmitted disease incidence as a surrogate marker for HIV incidence in prevention trials: a modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Because many of the sexual behaviors that place individuals at risk of acquiring HIV are the same as those that place them at risk for other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), researchers and policymakers have called for the use of non-HIV STDs as surrogate markers for HIV infection. GOALS: This study examined the epidemiologic conditions under which changes in STD incidence are associated with changes in HIV incidence. STUDY DESIGN: A mathematical model of HIV/STD transmission was applied to empirical data from a large HIV prevention intervention. The association between part

Association of Stress from Racism and High Depressive Symptomatology among a Community Sample of Young African American Women.

INTRODUCTION: Racism is a public health crisis in the United States disproportionately affecting African American women. The stress stemming from racism contributes to significant physical and mental health disparities, including a heightened risk of depressive symptoms. Despite African American women experiencing the highest levels of race-related stress and its associated adverse health outcomes, research exploring this association remains limited. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the impact of stress from racism on depressive symptoms among young African American women.

Deception by obfuscation: Studnicki et al.'s retracted longitudinal cohort study of emergency room utilization following abortion.

OBJECTIVES: In November 2022, the anti-abortion advocacy group Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Food and Drug Administration challenging the initial 2000 approval of mifepristone and its subsequent approvals, which removed unnecessary restrictions on its use, by disputing the medication's safety record. Such challenges relied on a study examining the incidence of emergency room visits following medication abortion with mifepristone and procedural abortion using Medicaid claims data from 1999-2015. In February 2024 that study was retracted by its publisher. In

Leptospirosis in the Caribbean Region between 2000 and 2022: A scoping review of morbidity and mortality.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis remains an important yet underreported public health concern in the Caribbean. Urbanisation, biodiversity loss and human encroachment into natural habitats have contributed to shifts in its epidemiological patterns. However, accurate assessment of disease burden is hindered by limited diagnostic capacity, surveillance challenges, and scarce research. We aim to describe geographical and temporal distribution of leptospirosis epidemiology in Caribbean Island Countries and Territories (CRICTs) and identify patterns and gaps in knowledge. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:

Interactions between influenza and bacterial respiratory pathogens: implications for pandemic preparedness.

It is commonly believed that the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the next influenza pandemic will mimic those of the 1918 pandemic. Determinative beliefs regarding the 1918 pandemic include that infections were expressed as primary viral pneumonias and/or acute respiratory distress syndrome, that pandemic-related deaths were the end states of the natural progression of disease caused by the pandemic strain, and that bacterial superinfections caused relatively fewer deaths in 1918 than in subsequent pandemics. In turn, response plans are focused on developing and/or increasing i

Overweight and obesity prevention for and with adolescents: The "Confronting obesity: Co-creating policy with youth" (CO-CREATE) project.

The CO-CREATE project focuses on the need for research on obesity prevention in adolescents to move away from studies of single interventions, toward the investigation of systems-based research incorporating youth involvement. This paper provides an overview of the project, presenting the objectives, design, and novel methodologies applied, as well as findings to date and anticipated outcomes. Adolescents (16-18 years old) in five European countries participated. Methods applied in the project include monitoring and benchmarking of policies, systematic literature reviews, epidemiological surve
