BACKGROUND: Early postoperative sleep disturbance is common after major abdominal cancer surgery and may hinder recovery. Whether analgesic strategy influences early sleep outcomes in gastric and colorectal cancer surgery remains uncertain.
METHODS: We conducted a single center retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients undergoing curative intent gastric or colorectal cancer surgery. Patients received postoperative analgesia with epidural analgesia, regional blockade, or intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV PCIA). The primary outcome was early postoperative sleep disturbance.

Complications were examined in a single surgeon's series of 207 consecutive adult patients undergoing first craniotomy for intra-axial brain tumour. CASE: A 56-year-old man was hospitalized for lumbago, weakness in the legs and sphincter problems. A dorsolumbar MRI revealed that the anterior and posterior peridural space from D11 to L3 was filled by a mass compressing the marrow and compacting the roots. The L2 to L4 laminectomy revealed an extradural tissue leading to the diagnosis of large B-cell lymphoma. Metastatic workup demonstrated unremarkable findings.
