Coxa vara in chondrodysplasia: prognosis study of 35 hips in 19 children.

BACKGROUND: To better understand anatomical and functional outcomes of coxa vara in chondrodysplasia according to the initial presenting hip morphology, disease type, and impact of surgery. METHODS: Clinical and radiographic records of 19 children (35 hips) diagnosed with coxa vara and with osteochondrodysplasia were reviewed. We classified the hip radiographic findings into 2 groups: (a) group I, coxa vara with a fragmented and/or nonossified head; and (b) group II, coxa vara with a regular femoral head. Surgical indications in coxa vara included decreased range of hip motion (usually dimini

Outcome of secondary intertrochanteric osteotomy for residual deformity after slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

BackgroundAlthough in situ pinning (ISP) is the standard primary treatment for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), some patients are left with residual deformity that may lead to long-term complications, including an increased risk of osteoarthritis. This study evaluates the radiographic and clinical outcomes of a secondary corrective procedure, the Pre-Operative computed Tomography-assisted intertrochanteric Flexion (POTOF) osteotomy, for treating these persistent deformities.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent a POTOF osteotomy as a secondary procedure for SCFE be

Does the development of AVN after the modified Dunn procedure for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) depend on slip stability? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a unique clinical entity, and many studies in the past few years have attempted to elucidate its natural history and ideal treatment. The modified Dunn procedure is one of its most widely accepted treatment options. However, the development of avascular necrosis (AVN) remains an issue of great concern. The main aim of this study was to identify the relationship between slip stability and the development of AVN after surgical hip dislocation through the modified Dunn procedure. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to the PR

Incidence and Clinical Characteristics of Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis in Patients with Endocrinopathy: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Endocrinopathy is a risk factor for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). We aimed to determine (1) the incidence of endocrinopathy-associated SCFE compared with that of non-endocrinopathy-associated SCFE, (2) whether the incidence of SCFE increases with the number of deficient hormones, and (3) the clinical characteristics of endocrinopathy-associated SCFE. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using a nationwide database in South Korea. All new diagnoses of endocrinopathy or SCFE between 2002 and 2019 in children born between 2002 and 2005 were identified. Th

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis: an epidemiological Nationwide study in Italy from 2001 to 2015.

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (epiphysiolysis of the femoral head, SCFE) is the most common pediatric hip disease in 10-14 years old children. The most used procedure to correct a stable form of SCFE is in situ pinning. Instead, the proper treatment for unstable forms is controversial. The first purpose of this study was to estimate annual admissions for SCFE in Italian patients from 2001 to 2015, basing on the hospitalization reports. The second aim was to assess the difference between regions regarding SCFE procedures. Lastly, a statistical prediction of the volume of SCFE pr

Low bone mineral density on DXA and slipped capital femoral epiphysis as rare presentation in a child with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome.

We present a 7-year-old girl with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS) and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). She underwent bilateral arthroscopy with implant fixation for the SCFE and the symptoms resolved. This was followed by fracture of the femur after minor trauma. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan done to evaluate her bone health revealed a low bone mineral density (BMD). Our case highlights the finding of low BMD on DXA and rare association of SCFE in a child with RTS. The conundrum in this case is whether this child can be labelled to have osteoporosis as defined by the cri

[Slipped proximal femoral epiphysis in adolescents. Risk factors].

UNLABELLED: The slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a fracture that occurs through the growth cartilage and causes slippage inside and under the proximal femoral epiphysis. The objective of this study was to determine whether the variables obesity, trauma and intense physical activity are associated with SCFE. A 32-item questionnaire was designed, in which weight, size and body mass index (BMI) were also reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case and control study conducted from November 2009 to November 2010 at IMSS Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital #21. Inclusion criteria for cases were as

Slipped upper femoral epiphysis in a 19-year-old male.

The authors present a case of unilateral slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE) in a 19-year old-male patient. An accompanying hypogonadism was noted on physical examination and laboratory tests. Extensive endocrinological work up revealed constitutional delay in puberty as the cause of hypogonadism. This is the first reported case of constitutional delay in puberty presenting with SUFE in English literature. There were six cases of SUFE reported in the literature at an age older than the typical age range (10-16 years), of which five cases were the result of hypopituitarism and one case of ra

Delayed-onset slipped capital femoral epiphysis: case report of association with pituitary tumor.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is an affliction of the hip presenting in adolescent children. There are several theories regarding the pathological cause of SCFE. The hormonal milieu during adolescence, combined with a deficiency in the physeal area of the growth plate, has been postulated as a possible etiology for its specific onset. In atypical circumstances, the early or late onset of SCFE may occur in the setting of unusual hormonal influences. This hormonal imbalance may be secondary to an underlying endocrinopathy-for example, hypothyroidism or hypogonadism. In this case, our

[Risk factors of osteonecrosis of the femoral head following slipped capital femoral epiphysis].

UNLABELLED: Osteonecrosis is a serious complication of the treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The purpose of this study was to identify factors predisposing to the development of this complication. We reviewed retrospectively 127 patients (150 hips) treated for slipped capital femoral epiphysis in our institution between 1980 and 2004. Clinical and radiological data were analyzed before and after treatment, and at consecutive follow-up examination. Osteonecrosis was defined in the basis of radiological criteria. The risk of development of osteonecrosis was correlated with multiple

Does unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis require urgent stabilization?

Controversy exists regarding the role of early reduction and stabilization in the management of unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis. It seems logical that early reduction and stabilization of an unstable slip might preserve the remaining blood supply to the epiphysis and reduce the incidence of avascular necrosis. Some studies have indeed shown lower rates of avascular necrosis following early reduction and stabilization, but others have shown the contrary. To try to resolve this disagreement, we conducted a retrospective review of slipped capital femoral epiphysis treated in Alder Hey

Biomechanics of the shoulder in youth baseball pitchers: implications for the development of proximal humeral epiphysiolysis and humeral retrotorsion.

BACKGROUND: The effects of repetitive throwing on the shoulders of developing athletes are not well understood because of the paucity of data describing the biomechanics of youth pitchers and the plasticity of the developing skeleton. HYPOTHESIS: The direction and magnitude of the stresses that exist at the proximal humeral physis during the fastball pitching motion are consistent with the development of proximal humeral epiphysiolysis (Little League shoulder) and/or humeral retro-torsion. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: A total of 14 elite youth baseball pitchers (mean

Short stature as a screening test for endocrinopathy in slipped capital femoral epiphysis.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis may be associated with hypothyroidism and other endocrinopathies. Routine screening for such abnormalities is unlikely to be cost-effective since the overall incidence of these disorders, in association with slipped capital femoral epiphysis, is low. The identification of a presenting characteristic which would predict the chance of an associated endocrinopathy would allow only selected children to be screened. Our aim was to determine if certain characteristics were useful as a screen for patients with an underlying endocrinopathy who presented with slipped c
