Neurophysiological and autonomic effects of Cognitive Remediation Therapy in schizophrenia: a randomized controlled EEG-GSR study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment and emotion dysregulation are core features of schizophrenia and remain insufficiently addressed by pharmacological treatment. Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) has demonstrated efficacy in improving neurocognitive performance; however, evidence linking behavioral improvements to neurophysiological and autonomic mechanisms remains limited. The present randomized controlled trial examined the effects of CRT on electrophysiological, autonomic, cognitive, and clinical outcomes in clinically stable individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS: Fifty-seven outpatients

Deficits of entropy modulation of the EEG: A biomarker for altered function in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder?

BACKGROUND: The synchronized activity of distributed neural assemblies — reflected in the electroencephalogram (EEG) — underpins mental function. In schizophrenia, modulation deficits of EEG spectral content during a P300 task have been replicated. The effects of treatment, chronicity and specificity in these deficits and their possible relationship with anatomic connectivity remain to be explored. METHODS: We assessed spectral entropy modulation of the EEG during a P300 task in 79 patients with schizophrenia (of those, 31 werein their first episode), 29 patients with bipolar disorder and 48

Attention orienting dysfunction during salient novel stimulus processing in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is characterised by marked disturbances of attention and information processing. Patients experience difficulty focusing on relevant cues and avoiding distraction by irrelevant stimuli. Event-related potential recordings indicate an amplitude reduction in the P3a component elicited by involuntary orienting to task-irrelevant, infrequent novel stimuli presented during auditory oddball detection in patients with schizophrenia. The goal of the present study was to elucidate the functional abnormality underlying the disturbed orienting to novel stimuli in schizophrenia. Twenty-eight

A Hybrid BCI Integrating EEG and Eye-Tracking for Assisting Clinical Communication in Patients With Disorders of Consciousness.

Assessing communication abilities in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOCs) is challenging due to limitations in the behavioral scale. Electroencephalogram-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and eye-tracking for detecting ocular changes can capture mental activities without requiring physical behaviors and thus may be a solution. This study proposes a hybrid BCI that integrates EEG and eye tracking to facilitate communication in patients with DOC. Specifically, the BCI presented a question and two randomly flashing answers (yes/no). The subjects were instructed to focus on an answ

P300 latency: abnormal in sleep apnea with somnolence and idiopathic hypersomnia, but normal in narcolepsy.

To evaluate cognitive abnormalities in excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) using cognitive evoked potentials (P300), and to evaluate if P300 measures differentiate among disorders of EDS, a series of EDS subjects were administered a polysomnogram, auditory and visual P300 testing using 31 scalp electrodes, and a multiple sleep latency test. P300 variables were compared with those of normal subjects. Forty normal subjects ages 16 to 65 years, and 69 EDS patients ages 16 to 65 years were used. Of these, 39 had profound obstructive sleep apnea (OSA, Respiratory Disturbance Index or RDI > 80/h slee

Associations of childhood experiences with event-related potentials in adults with autism spectrum disorder.

Childhood maltreatment is defined as experiencing of physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect in childhood. Maltreatment in childhood leads to substantial psychosocial problems later in life in the general population. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a higher risk of experiencing stressful and traumatic events, such as maltreatment, during childhood. Although childhood maltreatment reportedly leads to psychosocial problems in adults with ASD, the biological associations between childhood experiences and brain function in this population remain understudied. Here, we

Passive Hyperthermia Increases Neural Recruitment, Thereby Reducing Processing Efficiency During Executive Task Performance.

INTRODUCTION: Heat-induced hyperthermia impairs cognitive performance and contributes to central fatigue during exercise and environmental heat exposure. Electroencephalographic event-related potential (EEG-ERP) studies consistently show reduced P300 amplitudes under heat stress, whereas functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies often report expanded blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) activation. PURPOSE: This study examined how passive hyperthermia influences task-dependent neural activation and cognitive processing using both fMRI and EEG-ERP within comparable paradigms. M

Auditory event-related potentials in methadone substituted opiate users.

The effects of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) on neurophysiological function are unclear. Using an auditory oddball paradigm, event-related potential (ERP) amplitudes and latencies were measured in 32 patients undertaking MMT, 17 opiate users who were addicted but not receiving substitution treatment and 25 healthy control subjects. Compared with healthy control subjects, the MMT and opiate user groups showed an increased P200 amplitude in response to target stimuli. The opiate user group also exhibited a decreased amplitude and an increased latency of N200, and a greater number of task

Event-related Potential Patterns Reflect Reversed Hemispheric Activity during Visual Attention Processing in Children with Dyslexia: A Preliminary Study.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with dyslexia experience reading difficulties, whereas their other cognitive abilities seem normal. The purpose of this study was to investigate the event-related potential (ERP) patterns of children with dyslexia during a target-detection task. METHODS: Seventeen children with dyslexia and 18 children without this disorder participated in this study. We evaluated their writing and reading ability, symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and intelligence quotient. ERPs were recorded while participants performed a target-detection task, and the peak amplitu

Schizophrenia and affective disorders--cosegregation with a translocation at chromosome 1q42 that directly disrupts brain-expressed genes: clinical and P300 findings in a family.

A family with a (1;11)(q42;q14.3) translocation significantly linked to a clinical phenotype that includes schizophrenia and affective disorders is described. This translocation generates a LOD score of 3.6 when the disease phenotype is restricted to schizophrenia, of 4.5 when the disease phenotype is restricted to affective disorders, of 7.1 when relatives with recurrent major depression, with bipolar disorder, or with schizophrenia are all classed as affected. This evidence for linkage is among the strongest reported for a psychiatric disorder. Family members showed no distinctive features b

A systematic review of cognitive event-related potentials in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease.

This systematic review examined whether event-related potentials (ERPs) during higher cognitive processing can detect subtle, early signs of neurodegenerative disease. Original, empirical studies retrieved from PsycINFO and PubMed were reviewed if they analyzed patterns in cognitive ERPs (≥150 ms post-stimulus) differentiating mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), or cognitively intact elders who carry AD risk through the Apolipoprotein-E ε4 allele (ε4+) from healthy older adult controls (HC). The 100 studies meeting inclusion criteria (MCI = 47; AD = 47; ε4+ = 6) analyzed

Bayesian Signal Matching for Transfer Learning in ERP-Based Brain Computer Interface.

An Event-Related Potential (ERP)-based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Speller System assists people with disabilities to communicate by decoding electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. A P300-ERP embedded in EEG signals arises in response to a rare, but relevant event (target) among a series of irrelevant events (non-target). Different machine learning methods have constructed binary classifiers to detect target events, known as calibration. The existing calibration strategy uses data from participants themselves with lengthy training time. Participants feel bored and distracted, which causes bias

The Effect of Apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE ε4) on Visuospatial Working Memory in Healthy Elderly and Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment Patients: An Event-Related Potentials Study.

Background: Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 is the only established risk gene for late-onset, sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous studies have provided inconsistent evidence for the effect of APOE ε4 status on the visuospatial working memory (VSWM). Objective: The aim was to investigate the effect of APOE ε4 on VSWM with an event-related potential (ERP) study in healthy controls (HC) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients. Methods: The study recorded 39 aMCI patients (27 APOE ε4 non-carriers and 12 APOE ε4 carriers) and their 43 matched controls (25 APOE ε4 non-carriers and

Decoding ability makes waves in reading: deficient interactions between attention and phonological analysis in developmental dyslexia.

Whilst there is general consensus that phonological processing is deficient in developmental dyslexia, recent research also implicates visuo-attentional contributions. Capitalising on the P3a wave of event-related potentials as an index of attentional capture, we tested dyslexic and normal readers on a novel variant of a visual oddball task to examine the interplay of orthographic-phonological integration and attentional engagement. Targets were animal words (10% occurrence). Amongst nontarget stimuli were two critical conditions: pseudohomophones of targets (10%) and control pseudohomophones

Detecting consciousness in a total locked-in syndrome: an active event-related paradigm.

Total locked-in syndrome is characterized by tetraplegia, anarthria and paralysis of eye motility. In this study, consciousness was detected in a 21-year-old woman who presented a total locked-in syndrome after a basilar artery thrombosis (49 days post-injury) using an active event-related paradigm. The patient was presented sequences of names containing the patient's own name and other names. The patient was instructed to count her own name or to count another target name. Similar to 4 age- and gender-matched healthy controls, the P3 response recorded for the voluntarily counted own name was

Evidence of epistasis between the catechol-O-methyltransferase and aldehyde dehydrogenase 3B1 genes in paranoid schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a common yet severe psychiatric condition characterized by complex genetic mechanism and diverse clinical presentations. Our previous study indicated that the combined effect of two intronic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which are located in the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) and aldehyde dehydrogenase 3B1 (ALDH3B1) genes, respectively, conferred genetic risk to paranoid schizophrenia. METHODS: To further explore the precise mechanism of the COMT and ALDH3B1 interaction involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, we scanned all possible functi

ERP differences among subtypes of pervasive developmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Children with multiple complex developmental disorder (MCDD) have been distinguished from autistic children on the basis of chart reviews. It was questioned whether it is possible to find other, e.g., event-related potential (ERP), evidence for this assertion. METHODS: ERPs were measured in response to stimuli in a visual oddball task in autistic, MCDD, attention deficit disorder, dyslexic, and normal control children, to study whether ERP peaks can be used to distinguish autistic and MCDD children, and to classify the aforementioned groups. RESULTS: It was found that the P3 at f
