We report the study of motor evoked potentials by magnetic stimulation in 26 subjects with hereditary or sporadic ataxia. The subjects included 15 cases of late onset cerebellar ataxia (12 classified as olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA), 3 as spinocerebellar atrophy (SCA)) and 11 cases of early onset cerebellar ataxia (4 Friedreich's ataxia (FA) and 7 unclassifiable in Friedreich's ataxia (NFA)). Intraoperative combined SEP and BAEP monitoring provides a high level of safety for patients undergoing high risk intracranial surgical procedures. We performed this type of monitoring in a rare case of choroid plexus angioma, embedded into the pulvinar of the right thalamus, which was resected via a transcallosal approach. The brain-stem involvement in Friedreich's ataxia (FA) was studied by using brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and the blink reflex. Ten out of 18 patients had abnormal BAEPs, the main abnormality being complete absence of responses and disappearance of wave V. The aim of this study was to analyse the possibilities of trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEP) as an objective diagnostic tool for the classification of pain sensations of the 5th cranial nerve. 43 patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia, atypical facial pain and cancer pain were investigated. Behçet's disease with posterior uveitis was studied in 12 cases by flash electroretinography (FERG) and pattern visually evoked cortical potential (PVECP). Disappearance of oscillatory potentials was the initial change noted in FERG. Subnormal FERG and a delay in peak latency of the P100 component of PVECP were observed in patients with poor visual acuity and long-standing Behçet's disease. In order to compare longitudinal data with existing cross sectional extrauterine life data on somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), two groups of appropriate for gestational age optimal premature infants were studied. We studied auditory and visual evoked potentials in D.W., a patient with congenital stenosis of the cerebral aqueduct. Head CT scans revealed marked hydrocephalus with expanded ventricles filling more than 80% of the cranium and compressing brain tissue to less than 1 cm in thickness.
