How the adaptation of the human microbiome to harsh space environment can determine the chances of success for a space mission to Mars and beyond.

The ability of human cells to adapt to space radiation is essential for the well-being of astronauts during long-distance space expeditions, such as voyages to Mars or other deep space destinations. However, the adaptation of the microbiomes should not be overlooked. Microorganisms inside an astronaut's body, or inside the space station or other spacecraft, will also be exposed to radiation, which may induce resistance to antibiotics, UV, heat, desiccation, and other life-threatening factors. Therefore, it is essential to consider the potential effects of radiation not only on humans but also …

Sleep impairment and altered pattern of circadian biomarkers during a long-term Antarctic summer camp.

Antarctic expeditions include isolation and exposure to cold and extreme photoperiods (with continuous natural light during summer) that may influence psychophysiological responses modulated by luminosity and sleep. We assessed changes in night sleep patterns by actigraphy, salivary biomarkers, and perceptual variables in seven participants in the following time points along a 50-day camping expedition in Antarctica (Nelson Island): Pre-Field (i.e., on the ship before camp), Field-1, Field-2, Field-3, Field-4 (from 1st to 10th, 11th to 20th, 21st to 35th and 36th to 50th days in camp, respecti…

Acetazolamide improves cerebral oxygenation during exercise at high altitude. High Alt. Med. Biol. 7:290-301, 2006.--Acute mountain sickness is thought to be triggered by cerebral hypoxemia and be prevented by acetazolamide (Actz). The effect of Actz on cerebral oxygenation at altitude remains unknown. In 16 members of the 2005 Dutch Cho Oyu (8201 m, Tibet) expedition, the influence of Actz and exercise (750 mg PO daily) on heart rate, peripheral and regional

Paraneoplastic Syndromes in the Orbit and Ocular Adnexa: A Comprehensive Review.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are a group of nonmalignant disorders caused by immunologic or nonimmunologic reactions in response to an underlying cancer. In the orbit and ocular adnexa, paraneoplastic syndromes can affect every structure. Early recognition of paraneoplastic syndromes can expedite diagnosis and improve outcomes for patients as they are often the first sign of potentially life-threatening malignancy. The purpose of this review is to characterize the paraneoplastic syndromes as they manifest in the periorbita and orbit.

Seeing Bradycardia: How Ultrasound Improves Medical Decision-Making.

There is a broad differential for new-onset cardiac dysrhythmia, and the rapid identification of the underlying cause of these cardiac emergencies can be lifesaving. Identifying wall motion abnormalities on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is not a core echocardiography application for Emergency Medicine (EM) physicians. However, ruling in a regional wall motion abnormality can expedite patient-centered care and assist the busy EM physician in high-risk cases.

Post operative maxillary cyst: report of an unusual presentation.

A postoperative maxillary cyst is a rare, delayed complication of operations on the maxillary sinus, trauma. or infection, particularly in Japan. As far as we know this is the first reported case in a patient of African origin. The cyst presented as a midline palatal swelling that arose from the nasal, rather than the antral, mucosa. Awareness of this condition will expedite its correct diagnosis and management. In most cases, enuclcation is the treatment of choice.

Rotator cuff injuries and treatment.

Rotator cuff problems are among the most commonly encountered disorders of the shoulder, and are commonly seen by primary care physicians. Their exact mechanism for susceptibility to injury remains unclear; however, with an understanding of the shoulder's anatomy and biomechanics, we are better able to treat the insults incurred on the cuff. Early recognition, proper treatment, and appropriate follow-up may expedite healing and prevent the occurrence of further injury or complications.

Is Vertical Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 Infection Possible in Preterm Triplet Pregnancy? A Case Series.

There is limited data regarding the vertical transmission (VT) of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 infection. We report the first case of VT in preterm triplet pregnancy, with all triplets positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 at 20 hours and day 5 of life. This report reiterates the need for an expedited formulation of a simple, standardized, and reproducible international case definition and classification for VT.

Pylephlebitis in a previously healthy emergency department patient with appendicitis.

Pylephlebitis is a septic thrombophlebitis of the portal vein that is associated with multiple suppurative abdominal infections, such as diverticulitis, appendicitis, cholangitis, and cholecystitis. We describe a case of pylephlebitis in a patient with fever and diffuse, poorly localized abdominal pain who was eventually diagnosed with appendicitis. We aim to increase awareness of this condition among emergency physicians, as timely initiation of antibiotics and expedited surgical resection may improve outcomes in this potentially fatal disease.

Mathematical Modeling Shows that Overall Infection Burden is Reduced More by Vaccines that Decrease Spread or Accelerate Recovery than those that Lower Severe Infections or Death.

Vaccination programs have helped reduce case numbers and the death toll of COVID-19 significantly over the past few years. The spread and control of COVID-19 have been studied by means of ODE-based compartmental models in a number of studies. However, studies on the different benefits of vaccines, other than blocking infections, remain a paucity. In this study, we developed an ODE-based compartmental model with a separate disease progression path for vaccinated individuals. Key parameters were defined to account for the different facets of vaccine effectiveness: (1) blocking infections; (2) de

Post-Release Survival and Behavioral Recovery of a Rehabilitated Short-Finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus) in the South China Sea Revealed Through Satellite Tracking.

Post-release monitoring is critical for evaluating the success of rehabilitating stranded cetaceans, yet such data are scarce for many species in the South China Sea (SCS). We satellite-tracked a rehabilitated subadult male short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus; named "Haitang"), following a live stranding on Hainan Island, China. We collected tracking locations and behavioral data over a 52-day period and conducted a dedicated 3-day expedition to resight Haitang at sea in the sixth week post-release. Results confirm Haitang's survival beyond the critical 6-week benchmark. Its d

Improving hard-to-place kidney allocation: A machine learning approach to center ranking.

Kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease, yet donor scarcity and inefficiencies in allocation systems create major bottlenecks, resulting in prolonged wait times and alarming mortality rates. Despite the severe shortage of donor kidneys, timely and effective interventions to prevent non-utilization of life-saving organs remain limited. Expedited out-of-sequence placement of hard-to-place kidneys to centers with a high likelihood of acceptance has been recommended in the literature as a strategy to improve placement success. However, in practice, this proces

Nanomedicine-unlocked radiofrequency dynamic therapy dampens incomplete radiofrequency ablation-arised immunosuppression to suppress cancer relapse.

Incomplete radiofrequency ablation (iRFA) not only leaves residual tumor, but also render the residual tumor highly self-adaptable and immunosuppressive, consequently expediting residual tumor progression including relapse. To address it, radiofrequency dynamic therapy (RFDT) with identical trigger (namely radiofrequency) has been established and enabled by polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified Fe-based single atom nanozyme (P@Fe SAZ). P@Fe SAZ can respond to radiofrequency field to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), attaining the nanomedicine-unlocked low-temperature RFDT. Systematic experim

Evaluation of Apoptotic Effect of Transgenic Leishmania tropica Expressing MLLO-Bax-Smac Fusion Gene in Infected Macrophages, an In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: In the leishmaniasis parasitic infection, parasite escapes from the immune system of host or prevents macrophage apoptosis. It seems generating transgenic parasites to express proapoptotic proteins can accelerate the apoptosis of infected macrophage and prevent Leishmania differentiation. Hence, we investigated the efficacy of transgenic L. tropica expressing mLLO-BAX-SMAC in expediting macrophage apoptosis. METHODS: This study was performed at the Department of Parasitology and Mycology, School of Medicine, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (2022 to 2023), Isfahan, Iran. mLL

A novel insight for high-rate and low-efficiency glucose metabolism in depression through stable isotope-resolved metabolomics in CUMS-induced rats.

BACKGROUND: Existing research has suggested that depression results in disorders of glucose metabolism in the organism which causing insufficient energy supply. However, the overall changes in glucose metabolism that arise from depression have not been clarified. METHODS: In this study, the depression-like behavior in chronically unpredictable mild stressed rats was investigated, and the fate of glucose was tracked through isotope tracing and mass spectrometry, with a focus on metabolite changes in cecal contents. RESULTS: As indicated by the results, the isotopic results of cecal contents c

Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Seeded on a Biomimetic Spongiosa-like Scaffold: Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 Delivery by Overexpressing Fascia.

Human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) have the capacity for osteogenic differentiation and, in combination with suitable biomaterials and growth factors, the regeneration of bone defects. In order to differentiate hADSCs into the osteogenic lineage, bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) have been proven to be highly effective, especially when expressed locally by route of gene transfer, providing a constant stimulus over an extended period of time. However, the creation of genetically modified hADSCs is laborious and time-consuming, which hinders clinical translation of the approach. Instead,

Use of concentrate growth factors gel or membrane in chronic wound healing: Description of 18 cases.

Treating chronic skin wounds in patients with diabetes, bed sores, or stasis dermatitis is typically a time-consuming and costly process, and the outcome is not always promising. Concentrated growth factor (CGF) obtained from the autologous venous blood of patients via fractional centrifugation is employed for producing a CGF gel or membrane that can be applied to expedite self-regeneration of skin wounds. In this case report, we presented the results from 18 patients with chronic skin wounds treated with a CGF gel or membrane produced from autologous venous blood. Noticeable granulation tissu
