PATIENT: A 32-year-old male had an injury of his right eye by hot liquid plastic (Ultradur R). Intraoperatively, the eye was found broadly penetrated and filled up by more than 50% with ragged pieces of plastic. Computed tomography three days after wound closure revealed remaining foreign body material. As function was totally lost no further operation was considered. Seven weeks after the trauma, the eye was enucleated because of a painful phthisis. Histology showed numerous giant cells.

A neonate had a globular mass bulging through the eyelids of the left eye. Computed tomography revealed a large ectatic corneal lesion and the absence of a lens. The enucleated globe revealed that the posterior surface of the ectatic cornea was lined by iris tissue, indicating corneal staphyloma.

A 26 year old patient with a LeFort III fracture after an automobile accident exhibited bilateral luxation of the globes. An avulsio imcompleta with an evulsion of the optic nerve posteriorly was noted on his right eye and an avulsio incompleta with evulsion of the optic nerve anteriorly was seen on his left eye as a cause for the luxation. CLINICAL CASE: We report the case of a 25 year old woman who attended our Hospital with a pigmented lesion in anterior chamber angle of her right eye. She complained of reduced visual acuity on the same eye. On examination, and once complementary tests were performed, a pigmented lesion located on the iris root and ciliary body of her right eye was confirmed. A decision to perform a local resection was made and there were no surgical complication. Histology results confirmed the diagnosis of ciliary body melanocytoma.

This protocol describes how to obtain high-quality retinal cryosections in larger animals, such as rabbits. After enucleation, the eye is briefly immersed in the fixative. Then, the cornea and iris are removed and the eye is left overnight for additional fixation at 4 °C. Following fixation, the lens is removed.
