Ocular manifestations of infectious skin diseases.

Ocular complications of infectious skin diseases are a common occurrence. Managing the inflamed or infected eye in the emergency setting presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the emergency physician. Infectious agents may affect any part of the eye. Ocular findings may be the first sign of many infectious diseases, such as, for example, gonorrhea or chlamydia infection. Understanding the various forms of ocular involvement in these conditions is important, because untreated ophthalmic involvement can lead to severe vision loss. This review focuses on the significant ocular manifes

Unilateral pseudophakia and extended-wear aphakic contact lenses. A comparative study in a single patient population.

Twenty-nine patients who were pseudophakic in one eye and wearing a Permalens in the other eye were evaluated. Pseudophakic correction provided the patient with good, stable visual acuity, minimal risks, and an excellent long-term prognosis. Permalens aphakic correction also provided the patient with good, but fluctuating visual acuity. Risks such as deposit formation, tight lens syndrome, and corneal infections were not infrequently associated with the Permalens, and Permalens patients were also faced with the recurring cost of lens replacement. While both modalities of aphakic visual rehabil

Treatment of ocular infections with topical antibacterials.

Topically applied ophthalmic antibacterial preparations are widely used in the treatment of patients with superficial ocular infections. In addition, they are frequently used to augment treatment for intraocular infection administered systemically or via local instillation. Direct application delivers high concentrations of antimicrobial agents to the surface of the eye conveniently, quickly and with minimal systemic exposure to the agent. However, antibacterials are rapidly dissipated from the tear film and intraocular penetration of topical antibacterial agents is generally poor, necessitati

First molecular evidence of ocular transmission of Encephalitozoonosis during the intrauterine period in rabbits.

Many reports have been published on the suspected vertical transmission of Encephalitozoon cuniculi; however, prior to 2003, these reports were based on circumstantial evidence, such as histopathological, immunohistochemical, or serological diagnosis of the infection. In 2003, vertical transmission of the parasite was confirmed by detection of E. cuniculi DNA in fetuses with the nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. However, the passage of the parasite to eyes of fetus during the intrauterine stage still requires verification. In the current study, natively infected with parasite s

Influence of an extreme climatic event on bilateral asymmetry and occurrence of eye flukes in perch (Perca fluviatilis) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) from a lake in southeast England.

Eye flukes are common infections of freshwater fish and their occurrence as metacercarial stages may occur non-randomly resulting in an asymmetrical distribution within the host eyes. However, from previous studies the presentation of bias by these trematodes lacks consistency suggesting that congenital asymmetrical effects are unlikely to be the cause and exogenous factors, such as environmental stress, may be more influential. The present study, undertaken over a 4-year period, investigates the impact of an extreme heatwave and drought on the annual bilateral asymmetry and occurrence of two

An update on dry eye disease molecular treatment: advances in drug pipelines.

INTRODUCTION: Dry eye disease is a common disorder provoking changes in tear film and ocular surface. Untreated dry eye could cause ocular infections, corneal ulcer and blindness. Only a few drugs are authorized so far for the treatment of dry eye disease and the possibilities of evolution in this sector are immense. Consequently, a significant number of new potential solutions are under development or placed in the pharmaceutical pipeline, promising better results and lesser side effects. AREAS COVERED: In this article, the corresponding literature and recent Phase III clinical trial data an

Intercellular adhesion molecule-2 (ICAM-2) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ocular infection.

In a previous study, ICAM-1-deficient knockout (KO) mice were able to recruit inflammatory cells into Pseudomonas aeruginosa-infected eyes and resolve the infection as well as wild-type (WT) mice. Based on this observation, it was hypothesized that ICAM-2 could serve as a surrogate receptor for leukocyte recruitment in lieu of ICAM-1. To test this hypothesis, ICAM-2 expression was first examined in both uninfected and P. aeruginosa-infected eyes (6 h postinfection) by immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. Similar to ICAM-1, ICAM-2 was constitutively expressed on the vascular endothelium of the iris

[Viral Conjunctivitis: Findings, Therapy, and Prophylaxis].

Viral conjunctivitis is one of the most common acute eye diseases. The fall and winter months are known to be the main season for viral infections which is also reflected in the ophthalmological outpatient clinics. Viral conjunctivitis is often accompanied by symptoms of the upper and lower respiratory tract, fever, chills, arthralgia or skin lesions. The spectrum of pathogens comprises DNA viruses such as Adeno-, Herpes simplex and Molluscum contagiosum as well as RNA viruses. Symptoms caused by pandemic pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 and mpox viruses can also cause ocular manifestation. Viral

Eye diseases in travelers.

Travelling has been growing in popularity over the last several decades. Eye diseases, e.g. decreased visual acuity, inflammatory or degenerative lesions, chronic diseases or eye trauma, affect all groups of travelers. The main risk factors contributing to the manifestation or exacerbation of common ocular diseases include exposure to dry air (inside the airplane cabin or in air-conditioned hotel rooms), exposure to chlorinated or salty water (swimming/bathing in swimming pools or in the sea), and sudden changes in the weather conditions. In addition, travelers to tropical destinations are at

Moderation of herpetic stromal keratitis by basic fibroblast growth factor.

The effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on the evolution of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in eyes of rabbits was investigated. Rabbit eyes were infected with HSV-1 by a non-invasive inoculation and treated for 7 days with an eye drop solution containing either bovine bFGF (50 ng; three times daily), or bFGF diluent as control. The treatment started 2 hr, 24 hr or 96 hr post-inoculation (p.i.). Follow-up of clinical disease parameters, such as conjunctivitis, epithelial keratitis, stromal disease, corneal neovascularization and of viral isolation continued for 17 days. The mo

Corneal cross-linking guards against infectious keratitis: an experimental model.

BACKGROUND: PACK-CXL (photo-activated chromophore for keratitis-corneal cross-linking) is an alternative option in treatment of corneal infections. It inhibits corneal melting by increasing the stromal resistance, besides the microbicidal effect of photo-activated riboflavin. METHODS: Corneal infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staph aureus bacteria was induced in 20 eyes of 10 rabbits after 6 weeks of corneal cross-linking in half of the eyes, while the other acted as control group. Clinical and corneal histopathological examination was done to evaluate the extent of inflammation, ulce

Ophthalmomyiasis externa caused by Oestrus ovis.

This report describes the case of a woman in her early 20s who presented with a 3-day history of mobile foreign bodies and watering from her right eye. She had recently returned from vacation on a Greek island and presented to an ophthalmology unit in London, UK. A sample taken demonstrated Oestrus ovis infestation and confirmed the diagnosis of ophthalmomyiasis externa. She was treated with prophylactic topical antibiotics and subsequently made a full recovery. This was only the sixth presentation of O. ovis ophthalmomyiasis externa documented within the UK and the only case documented within

Primed Mycobacterial Uveitis (PMU) as a Model for Post-Infectious Uveitis.

The term 'uveitis' describes a heterogeneous set of conditions that all feature intraocular inflammation. Broadly, uveitis is defined by etiology: infection or autoimmunity. Infectious uveitis requires treatment with the appropriate antimicrobial agents, while autoimmune uveitis requires treatment with corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive agents. Post-infectious uveitis is a form of chronic uveitis that requires corticosteroids to control immune sequela following the initial infection. Uveitis associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection is a well-recognized form of post-in

Recurrent bilateral chorioretinitis with positive Lyme serology: a case report.

BACKGROUND: It has been disputed whether Lyme is a true causative agent in posterior uveitis or an incidental finding. CASE PRESENTATION: This report presents a case of a 33-year-old Caucasian female with a remote history of Lyme disease who presented with blurry vision in the right eye. Exam and imaging revealed a right active chorioretinitis and positive Lyme serology. The patient was systemically treated with prednisone and antibiotics. Symptoms initially improved, but she later developed a localized choriocapillaritis in the left eye. Steroids and antibiotics were restarted many times wit

A Rare Hideout for Caterpillar Hairs.

Ophthalmia nodosa is an inflammatory reaction of ocular tissues in response to caterpillar setae. Setae are fibers produced by a number of insects and plants, and there are extensive reports of cases caused by caterpillars and spiders. These hairs are covered by microscopic barbs that facilitate their entry and migration into the ocular tissues resulting in severe inflammation. They are predominantly found buried in the conjunctiva and cornea. Rarely, they may penetrate through the cornea to enter the anterior chamber, lens, and posterior segment. Caterpillar hair in the meibomian gland orific
