Rugby-related adult maxillofacial trauma injuries: a NEISS database study.

PURPOSE: The primary objective of this study is to delineate the data on maxillofacial trauma in rugby utilizing the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database. Specifically, we want to establish the prevalence of facial rugby injuries in terms of age, mechanism of injury, and degree of injury in order to develop ways to limit facial trauma in the future. METHODS: The NEISS database was accessed in February 2020 in order to identify adult patients (> 19 years of age) presenting to the emergence department (ED) for rugby-related head and facial injuries from the previous 1…

Combat-related facial burns: analysis of strategic pitfalls.

PURPOSE: Burns constitute approximately 10% of all combat-related injuries to the head and neck region. We postulated that the combat environment presents unique challenges not commonly encountered among civilian injuries. The purpose of the present study was to determine the features commonly seen among combat facial burns that will result in therapeutic challenges and might contribute to undesired outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was a retrospective study performed using a query of the Burn Registry at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research Burn Center for all active d

High-Energy Traumatic Maxillofacial Injury.

High-energy blunt or penetrating impact leads to great variability in facial injury patterns. Although the mechanism, pattern, and distribution of forces vary, the resultant damage to hard and soft tissues requires dedicated planning and execution of debridement and reconstructive procedures. This article evaluates the initial management of patients sustaining high-energy facial impact injuries resulting in one or more comminuted or displaced facial fractures, with accompanying severe facial lacerations and/or soft tissue defects and avulsion injuries. Seventy-three patients met the criteria f

Trigeminal nerve injury following accidental airbag deployment and assessment with quantitative sensory testing.

High velocity motor vehicle accidents are associated with an increase in mortality rates and a significant number of facial injuries. Accidental deployment of airbags and the associated release of hot gases can result in both thermal and mechanical injuries. The more commonly reported maxillofacial injuries include temporomandibular joint fractures and dislocations, dental trauma, facial nerve paralysis, and other orofacial pain complaints. The following case report describes a patient with facial trauma from the accidental deployment of an airbag resulting in complaints consistent with a neur…

Management of dentoalveolar injuries in children: a case report.

Children aged 6-15 years old experience more injuries to their teeth and the injuries sustained are more serious as evidenced by a higher percentage of luxations, avulsions, fractures and dislocations. The mandible is the most frequently fractured facial bone and mandibular alveolar injuries have been reported to range between 8.1-50.6%. Those with mandibular or midface fractures have a higher incidence of associated chest, extremity, abdomen and cervical spine injuries. The growing patient with facial injuries presents the clinician with a series of thought-provoking circumstances. Dentoalveo…

Epidemiology and cause-specific outcomes of facial fracture in hospitalized children.

PURPOSE: Facial fractures in the pediatric population have a significant impact on public health. Although some demographic data exists regarding the overall epidemiology of facial fractures, little attention has been paid to the patterns of facial fractures based on the etiology of the trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Kids' Inpatient Database 2000-2009 was utilized to analyze pediatric facial fractures. A total of 21,533 patients were identified. Associations of patient characteristics with outcomes of interest were assessed. RESULTS: The top three etiologies were motor vehicle accident (M

Incidence of facial fractures in association with facial laceration from dog bites in the pediatric patient.

INTRODUCTION: Dog bite injuries occur in approximately 102 of every 100,000 population. Pediatric facial injuries due to dog bites are more common than in the adult largely due to height difference and ease of access for the dog to the head and neck region. Although majority are soft tissue injuries, pediatric facial fractures from dog bites are estimated at approximately 5%, with the true incidence unknown. We hypothesize that depth and facial subsite of laceration can indicate likelihood of facial fracture presence in pediatric patients with dog bite injuries. METHODS: This single-instituti…

Electronic temperature monitoring during the decompression surgery of the facial nerve.

Despite of its apparent protection by being located deep in a bony canal, the facial nerve is a cranial pair of nerves more vulnerable to traumatic injuries. The surgical accidents are the most frequent causes of intratemporal complications of the facial nerve. Among the postoperative sequelae, the thermal injuries are common due to overheating of the otologic burr resulting in facial paralysis. For the prevention of thermal injuries in the facial nerve was designed a data acquisition board to obtain the temperature measured by thermocouples using a PC and parallel communication. The signals f

Football-related maxillofacial injuries.

Maxillofacial injuries sustained playing sports are becoming increasingly common, and in the UK where football is the most popular team sport, associated maxillofacial injuries are a regular occurrence. This study retrospectively examined data on patients who were referred with facial injuries sustained playing football between 2007 and 2019 (n = 265). Demographics, mechanism of injury, diagnosis, and treatment received were analysed. The mean (SD) age was 25 (11.0) years (range 3-85) and there was a strong male predominance (n = 256, 97% male). Facial fractures were diagnosed in 143 (54%) pat…
