Extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck: presentation in the facial bones.

1. The most common site of ENL is the head and neck, with Waldeyer's ring and specifically, the tonsil, standing as the most frequent area of involvement. Most patients have intermediate or high-grade histologies. 2. Patients present with identical signs and symptoms as squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, underscoring the importance of a thorough otolaryngological examination. 3. Biopsy samples should be submitted as fresh and permanent samples specifically labeled for lymphoma evaluation. 4. A thorough and timely staging work-up should be conducted once a positive biopsy diagnosis i

[Progressive cranial neuropathy due to perineural spread of a facial squamous cell carcinoma].

The paper aims to present the case of a progressive and unilateral cranial polyneuropathy due to perineural spread of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. This is a case of a 73 year old man with a history of squamous cell carcinoma in the right temporal region that was removed in 1992. In May 2000 he first presented pain and numbness in the distribution of the first branch of right trigeminal nerve and weakness of the ipsilateral frontal muscle. Later on he presented right ophthalmoplegia, and damage of lower cranial nerves, leading to dysphagia and respiratory distress. He was admitted in Marc

[Iatrogenic lesions of the facial nerve during parotid surgery for pleomorphic adenoma].

The authors, after a survey of the literature, describe the injuries of the facial nerve during parotid surgery for pleomorphic adenoma. The facial nerve damages are often transient with total resolution, except where one or more branches are deliberately sacrificed for malignant tumors or recurrence.

"Take the Facial Nerve Out of the Picture": A Novel Approach for Skull Base Recurrences and Facial Nerve Tumors.

INTRODUCTION: Facial paralysis secondary to skull base recurrences or facial nerve tumors presents a significant challenge, as tumor resection usually worsens facial function. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to show an alternative approach, ensuring facial reanimation irrespective of the evolution of the tumor, the so-called "take the facial nerve out of the picture." METHODS: Retrospective study of patients with a skull base recurrence or a facial nerve tumor who underwent facial reanimation prior to tumor management. Facial function was assessed using the House-Brackmann and Sunnybrook

Hidrocystoma-like tumours with RET or ALK fusion: a study of four cases.

Hidrocystoma is thought to be a benign retention cyst of sweat ductal units. The lesion is usually located in the periorbital skin; however, lesions with similar histopathological features are rarely observed in extra-facial sites. Herein, we present four cases of hidrocystoma-like tumours in extra-facial skin sites that harboured a RET or ALK rearrangement. This study features a 67-year-old female with a 10 mm-sized digital tumour (Case 1), a 62-year-old male with an 8 mm-sized clavicular tumour (Case 2), a 61-year-old male with a 19 mm-sized digital tumour (Case 3), and an 11-year-old female

Lymphoma presenting as preauricular tumor in unilateral parotid gland agenesis: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Parotid gland agenesis is a rare, congenital, usually asymptomatic disorder. Until now, only 24 cases with unilateral, incidentally found, parotid gland agenesis have been described. Here, we present the first reported case of an ipsilateral preauricular neoplasm in a patient with unilateral parotid gland agenesis. During surgery, the position of the greater auricular- and facial nerves was documented. Furthermore, we performed the first sialendoscopy for this rare disorder to assess the number of duct branches, which might be indicative of the abundance of parotid tissue. Moreover

Facial nerve damage following surgery for cerebellopontine angle tumours. Prevention and comprehensive treatment.

Facial nerve (CN VII) palsy or even its transient paresis causes physical disability but is also a psychosocial problem. Immediately after vestibular schwannoma removal, different degrees of CN VII paresis occur in 20-70% of patients. Facial nerve paresis is observed in 10-40% after surgery of cerebellopontine angle meningiomas. Postoperative facial nerve weakness significantly reduces or completely withdraws with time in the majority of cases. However, even if prognosis for CN VII regeneration is good, proper management is needed because of the potential for serious ophthalmic complications.

Bilateral simultaneous facial paralysis--differential diagnosis and treatment options. A case report and review of literature.

Bilateral facial paralysis or paresis of peripheral origin is a rare condition and therefore represents a diagnostic challenge. We here present a case of a previously healthy woman who was hospitalized for symptoms of meningitis. On the second day of her hospital stay, she developed bilateral facial paresis. Later, the patient developed also tachycardia and dysrhythmias. A thorough diagnostic procedure including lumbar puncture, routine blood investigation with serological tests, MRI of the brain, Holter monitoring and transoesophageal echocardiographia, revealed meningitis with radiculitis, f

Intraparotid Facial Nerve Schwannoma: A Comprehensive Review of 70 Cases at One Single Institution.

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, and surgical outcomes of intraparotid facial nerve schwannoma (IPFNS) and propose a more definitive therapeutic algorithm for IPFNS. METHODS: Between January 2018 and December 2023, all the cases of IPFNS at our single institution were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: In total, 70 patients were included in this study. Among them, 23 (32.3%) were men and 47 (67.7%) were women. The patients commonly presented with a painless parotid mass, and three patients complained of facial paralysis. Magnetic resonanc

Perineural Invasion of the Facial Nerve Presenting as Rapid-Onset Excruciating Facial Pain and Paralysis.

OBJECTIVE: This case report describes an 82-year-old female presenting with sudden onset, total right-sided facial paralysis, later diagnosed as metastatic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with perineural invasion of the facial nerve. The case highlights the diagnostic challenges of facial paralysis with associated pain in elderly patients and underscores the importance of recognizing subtle imaging findings suggestive of malignancy. METHODS: A retrospective review of the patient's clinical presentation, imaging studies, surgical intervention, and pathological findings was conducted. RESULTS: T

Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma presenting as a chin nodule in a 15-year-old male.

Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma (RMH), also known as congenital midline hamartoma and striated muscle hamartoma, is a rare congenital malformation presenting most commonly in midline sites of the head and neck region. Since its first description in 1986, 67 cases have been reported to date. We report a case of RMH presenting as a chin nodule in an otherwise healthy 15-year-old male. The patient presented with a dome-shaped subcutaneous lesion on his chin which had been present since birth, but had grown and was interfering with his ability to shave. He otherwise had no history of congeni
