Facial trauma in a softball player.

Facial trauma frequently results in fracture of the facial bones. A blowout fracture involves the eye orbit and usually transpires when the object hitting the eye (eg, baseball, softball, fist, elbow) is larger than the orbit itself. The mechanism of injury will provide the physician with a clue to the diagnosis. Prompt recognition of any significant complications, proper imaging, and referral to an ophthalmology specialist are usually required. Facial reconstruction by a plastic surgeon may also be necessary.

Multitask, Multilabel, and Multidomain Learning With Convolutional Networks for Emotion Recognition.

Automated emotion recognition in the wild from facial images remains a challenging problem. Although recent advances in deep learning have assumed a significant breakthrough in this topic, strong changes in pose, orientation, and point of view severely harm current approaches. In addition, the acquisition of labeled datasets is costly and the current state-of-the-art deep learning algorithms cannot model all the aforementioned difficulties. In this article, we propose applying a multitask learning loss function to share a common feature representation with other related tasks. Particularly, we

Lonely adolescents exhibit heightened sensitivity for facial cues of emotion.

Contradicting evidence exists regarding the link between loneliness and sensitivity to facial cues of emotion, as loneliness has been related to better but also to worse performance on facial emotion recognition tasks. This study aims to contribute to this debate and extends previous work by (a) focusing on both accuracy and sensitivity to detecting positive and negative expressions, (b) controlling for depressive symptoms and social anxiety, and (c) using an advanced emotion recognition task with videos of neutral adolescent faces gradually morphing into full-intensity expressions. Participan

Case of Asperger's Syndrome and Lesion of the Right Amygdala: Deficits in Implicit and Explicit Fearful Face Recognition.

Introduction: Studies of brain-damaged patients revealed that amygdala lesions cause deficits in the processing and recognition of emotional faces. Patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have similar deficits also related to dysfunctions of the limbic system including the amygdala. Methods: We investigated a male patient who had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. He also presented with a lesion of the right mesial temporal cortex, including the amygdala. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate neuronal processing during a passive viewing task of implici

Middle ear osteoma causing progressive facial nerve weakness: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Facial nerve weakness is most commonly due to Bell's palsy or cerebrovascular accidents. Rarely, middle ear tumor presents with facial nerve dysfunction. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a very unusual case of middle ear osteoma in a 49-year-old Caucasian woman causing progressive facial nerve deficit. A subtle middle ear lesion was observed on otoscopy and computed tomographic images demonstrated an osseous middle ear tumor. Complete surgical excision resulted in the partial recovery of facial nerve function. CONCLUSIONS: Facial nerve dysfunction is rarely caused by middle ear tum

Methamphetamine drug abuse and addiction: Effects on face asymmetry.

The abnormal aging mechanism associated with drug abuse results in poor performance of face recognition systems on illicit drug addicts (mainly methamphetamine). Consequently, the high correlation between drug addiction and crime exaggerates the urge for further investigations to originate and overcome this problem. Concurrently, face asymmetry was found to play a significant role in face recognition and age estimation. Therefore, facial asymmetry assessment for meth-addicts is highly serviceable, acknowledging how meth addiction accelerates biological aging and causes severe face distortion.

Using image reconstruction to investigate face perception in amnesia.

Damage to the medial temporal lobe (MTL), which is traditionally considered to subserve memory exclusively, has been reported to contribute to impaired face perception. However, it remains unknown how exactly such brain lesions may impact face representations and in particular facial shape and surface information, both of which are crucial for face perception. The present study employed a behavioral-based image reconstruction approach to reveal the pictorial representations of face perception in two amnesic patients: DA, who has an extensive bilateral MTL lesion that extends beyond the MTL in

A causal relationship between face-patch activity and face-detection behavior.

The primate brain contains distinct areas densely populated by face-selective neurons. One of these, face-patch ML, contains neurons selective for contrast relationships between face parts. Such contrast-relationships can serve as powerful heuristics for face detection. However, it is unknown whether neurons with such selectivity actually support face-detection behavior. Here, we devised a naturalistic face-detection task and combined it with fMRI-guided pharmacological inactivation of ML to test whether ML is of critical importance for real-world face detection. We found that inactivation of

When affect overlaps with concept: emotion recognition in semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia.

The most recent theories of emotions have postulated that their expression and recognition depend on acquired conceptual knowledge. In other words, the conceptual knowledge derived from prior experiences guide our ability to make sense of such emotions. However, clear evidence is still lacking to contradict more traditional theories, considering emotions as innate, distinct and universal physiological states. In addition, whether valence processing (i.e. recognition of the pleasant/unpleasant character of emotions) also relies on semantic knowledge is yet to be determined. To investigate the c

Reading the mind in the infant eyes: paradoxical effects of oxytocin on neural activity and emotion recognition in watching pictures of infant faces.

The neuropeptide oxytocin facilitates parental caregiving and is involved in the processing of infant vocal cues. In this randomized-controlled trial with functional magnetic resonance imaging we examined the influence of intranasally administered oxytocin on neural activity during emotion recognition in infant faces. Blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) responses during emotion recognition were measured in 50 women who were administered 16 IU of oxytocin or a placebo. Participants performed an adapted version of the Infant Facial Expressions of Emotions from Looking at Pictures (IFEEL pic

Simulation of prosthetic vision with the PRIMA system and enhancement of face representation.

OBJECTIVE: Patients implanted with the PRIMA photovoltaic subretinal prosthesis in geographic atrophy report form vision with the average acuity matching the 100 μm pixel size. Although this remarkable outcome enables them to read and write, they report difficulty with perceiving faces. Despite the pixelated stimulation, patients report seeing smooth patterns rather than dots. This paper provides a novel, non-pixelated algorithm for simulating prosthetic vision the way it is experienced by PRIMA patients, compares the algorithm's predictions to clinical perceptual outcomes, and offers computer

More is not always better: Audiovisual speech hampers infants' face recognition.

By 9 months, infants recognize own-race faces from static images, but struggle when familiarized with naturalistic audiovisual (AV) talking faces, despite daily exposure to dynamic, speaking faces. This study examined whether AV speech or AV mouth chewing motion disrupts face recognition and whether selective attention to the mouth or cognitive load mediates this effect. We recorded the eye gaze of 10-month-olds (N = 133) and 20-month-olds (N = 125) during a Visual Paired Comparison task in three conditions: Talking (AV, speech, dynamic), Chewing (AV, no speech, dynamic), and Static (no AV, no

Hormonal contraception & face processing: Examining face gender, androgenicity & treatment duration.

Previous cross-sectional studies observed differences between users and non-users of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) in both the structure and function of the fusiform face area (FFA) related to face processing. For the present study 120 female participants performed high-resolution structural, as well as functional scans at rest, during face encoding and face recognition. Participants were either never-users of COCs (26), current first-time users of androgenic (29) or anti-androgenic COCs (23) or previous users of androgenic (21) or anti-androgenic COCs (21). Results suggest that associat

Face Processing in School Children with Dyslexia: Neuropsychological and Eye-tracking Findings.

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental difficulty affecting reading, but recent data in adults suggest that difficulties also extend to face processing. Here, we tested face processing in school children with and without dyslexia, using eye-tracking and neuropsychological tests. Children with dyslexia didn't differ significantly from controls in face gaze patterns, face memory, or face identification accuracy. However, they were slower and more heterogeneous, with larger within-group variance than controls. Increased gaze patterns toward the eyes were associated with better face memory in controls.

Let's face it: The lateralization of the face perception network as measured with fMRI is not clearly right dominant.

The neural face perception network is distributed across both hemispheres. However, the dominant role in humans is virtually unanimously attributed to the right hemisphere. Interestingly, there are, to our knowledge, no imaging studies that systematically describe the distribution of hemispheric lateralization in the core system of face perception across subjects in large cohorts so far. To address this, we determined the hemispheric lateralization of all core system regions (i.e., occipital face area - OFA, fusiform face area - FFA, posterior superior temporal sulcus - pSTS) in 108 healthy su

Studying the visual brain in its natural rhythm.

How the brain fluidly orchestrates visual behavior is a central question in cognitive neuroscience. Researchers studying neural responses in humans and nonhuman primates have mapped out visual response profiles and cognitive modulation in a large number of brain areas, most often using pared down stimuli and highly controlled behavioral paradigms. The historical emphasis on reductionism has placed most studies at one pole of an inherent trade-off between strictly controlled experimental variables and open designs that monitor the brain during its natural modes of operation. This bias toward si

Face first impression of trustworthiness in Williams Syndrome: Dissociating automatic vs decision based perception.

Humans make rapid decisions of trustworthiness based on facial appearance. Williams Syndrome (WS) is a genetic disorder associated with hypersociability toward strangers, suggesting a disruption in trust assessment. We recorded eye-movements in neurotypically-developed (TD) participants (N = 21) and in patients with WS (N = 22) as we presented pairs of computer-generated faces, pre-rated as trustworthy or untrustworthy. In a spontaneous visual preference task, TD participants gazed significantly longer at trustworthy faces while patients with WS showed no preferences for either face-type. Next

Finding the face in the crowd: an anger superiority effect.

Facial gestures have been given an increasingly critical role in models of emotion. The biological significance of interindividual transmission of emotional signals is a pivotal assumption for placing the face in a central position in these models. This assumption invited a logical corollary, examined in this article: Face-processing should be highly efficient. Three experiments documented an asymmetry in the processing of emotionally discrepant faces embedded in crowds. The results suggested that threatening faces pop out of crowds, perhaps as a result of a preattentive, parallel search for s
