The galectin family and digestive disease.

The soluble-type lectins or galectins constitute a family of proteins defined by shared consensus amino acid sequence and affinity for beta-galactose-containing oligosaccharides. These molecules are widely distributed in the animal kingdom; to date, 15 mammalian galectins have been described but more are likely to be discovered. These proteins are involved in many biological processes including cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion, growth regulation, signaling, and cytokine secretion. Over the last decade, a vast amount of reports has shown the importance of several galectins in the development …

Is family screening necessary in brucellosis?

Brucellosis is an endemic disease in Turkey. Simultaneous infections among family members consuming infected dairy products have been reported. The most frequent signs and symptoms are nonspecific, and most human cases remain unrecognized. We aimed to screen family members of index cases with brucellosis. A questionnaire including demographical and epidemiological data was obtained. All cases were tested by slide agglutination tests (Rose Bengal test). Seropositive ones were further tested by tube agglutination tests (Wrigth test). In the index cases, Brucella antibody titers of > or = 1:160 w…

Fraser syndrome: recurrence in a family.

Fraser syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive condition with classical features of cryptophthalmos, syndactyly, ambiguous genitalia, genitourinary mal-formations and mental retardation. We report a family with affected child where the pregnant woman was referred at 24 weeks of gestation for termination of pregnancy. The aborted fetus showed typical findings suggestive of Fraser syndrome.

A family study of pathological gambling.

The cause of pathological gambling (PG) is unknown. The current study was conducted to determine whether PG is familial, and to examine patterns of familial aggregation of psychiatric disorder. To that end, 31 case probands with DSM-IV PG and 31 control probands were recruited and interviewed regarding their first degree relatives (FDRs). Available and willing FDRs were directly interviewed with structured instruments of known reliability, and best estimate final diagnoses were blindly assigned for 193 case and 142 control relatives over age 18 years. The results were analyzed using logistic r

A family study on primary blepharospasm.

BACKGROUND: Previous family studies provided evidence that blepharospasm (BSP) can aggregate in families but did not give accurate and reliable information on the characteristics and degree of familial clustering. AIM: To evaluate the proportion of familial and non-familial BSP cases, the clinical expression of dystonia within families, the inheritance pattern, and the extent of penetrance. METHODS: The study was based on the examination of the first degree relatives of 56 probands with primary BSP. RESULTS: The 56 families produced a potential population of 436 first degree relatives of wh…

Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome in a family.

We report on two cases (daughter and father) with Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome (GCPS). The clinical manifestations in craniofacial structure, hands and feet are described. We found marked phenotypic variability in these family members with GCPS over the hands and feet. Our patients were seen to have higher rate of feet postaxial polydactyly both clinically and radiologically; they had lower rate of clinical postaxial polydactyly over hands, with feet preaxial polydactyly both clinically and radiologically compared to previous review articles covering 52 cases. Multiple linkage analysis…

[Celiac disease in close family members].

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the presence of celiac disease (CD) in close family members of celiac patients, and the possible clinical differences between family members diagnosed and their respective index cases. DESIGN: Descriptive, observational study based on a series of cases. SETTING: Health centre and hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Family members of celiac patients registered with the Association of Celiacs of Andalusia, based in Sevilla. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: Patients and family members were interviewed and 2 questionnaires were filled in. The first, aimed at celiacs, recorded details of their…

Expression of p53 family in scars.

BACKGROUND: There have been some reports on the relationship between p53 and keloid formation. However, there have been no studies comparing the p53 expression among scars in various stages of maturity. However, p63 and p73 have been identified as p53-related genes and have been found to be similar to p53 in their structures and functions and these proteins have also been suggested to relate to scar formation. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the expression of three proteins of the p53 family in scars with various clinical manifestations and discuss the shared features and differences of these prote…

[A family of acute intermittent porphyria].

A 62-year-old man who had twice received laparotomies for abdominal pain of unknown origin was admitted to our hospital with acute abdominal pain. His family history of acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) suggested that it arose from acute porphyria. We treated the patient with 5% glucose solution by i.v. drip infusion and his abdominal pain improved rapidly. Diagnosis of AIP was established by the demonstration of reduced erythrocyte porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD) activity and a point mutation (CAG --> CGG) in a splicing site in intron 10/exon 11 in the PBGD gene by DNA analysis. For screeni…

[Support for the family from infancy].

A rising tendency has been reported for child abuse in our country in recent years, and the need to provide support for child-care capabilities in the home has been raised. In this context, attention has turned to the mother-child relationship and the mother's mental health from early on, in pregnancy and the antenatal period. In particular, it has become clear that the incidence of post-partum maternity blues and puerperal depression is higher than hitherto believed, drawing focus upon the effects of the mother's depression on the mother-child relationship. This report outlines the research a

Structural proteomics of the poxvirus family.

Recent concerns over the potential use of variola virus-commonly known as smallpox-and other orthopox viruses as weapons of bioterrorism have increased research efforts towards creating new antiviral drugs and safer more effective vaccines. Here we introduce a new resource for structural information of poxvirus proteins: the poxvirus proteomics database (PPDB). In the PPDB, we leverage recently developed bioinformatics structure prediction tools on a genomic scale and provide results in a publicly accessible format. The current version of the system contains both experimentally determined and

[Eosinophilia in a family from Bosnia].

We describe reference to a family from Bosnia that the diagnosis of Trichinellosis can be difficult despite notice of travel-history and eosinophilia but lack of further epidemiological datas and due to the rarity of this zoonosis. Clinical pattern of trichinellosis are fever, headache, myalgia, periorbital oedema, less frequently diarrhea and abdominal pain. Dreaded complications are myocarditis and encephalitis. High eosinophilia and increased creatine phosphocinase activity are the most frequently observed laboratory features. The detection of specific circulating antibodies or the parasito…

Family burden and quality of life.

Providing care to family members dealing with chronic illness may result in feelings of burden or strain for caregivers that can diminish their quality of life. This article examines objective and subjective dimensions of family burden, and the extent to which illness characteristics and contextual variables have been found to contribute to caregiver stress for different chronic illnesses. After discussing some of the problems in the conceptualization and measurement of caregiving burden, it suggests several important directions for future research, including further clarification of generic v…

The SLC31 (Ctr) copper transporter family.

Copper is essential for many copper-dependent processes, including mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, free-radical detoxification, pig … lism, Menkes disease and Wilson disease. A different class of transporter known as the SLC31 or Ctr family of proteins mediates cellular copper uptake. These high-affinity copper transporters exist in all eukaryotes and their discovery has provided new insights into how cells acquire and regulate this essential nutrient. The following is a brief overview …

Children's responses to family member homicide.

Homicide is a significant behavioral deviation resulting in a sudden and unexpected loss of life and can leave children in the chaotic wake. Interviews conducted with 13 children ages 9 to 11 years during the initial 1 to 3 months after a family homicide provided insight into themes of bereavement. A major finding in the study was that the witnessing or hearing the news of a family member homicide was a powerful associative factor for childhood posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and for complicated bereavement.
