Fatigue in pediatric patients with familial Mediterranean fever.

OBJECTIVES: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is characterized by recurrent, self-limited attacks of fever with serositis involving the peritoneum, pleura and joints. Fatigue is a common problem in many pediatric rheumatic diseases; however, has not been evaluated systematically in FMF patients. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to evaluate fatigue and its possible allied factors in patients with FMF. METHODS: Patients with FMF, aged between 10 and 21 years, were assessed by completed validated fatigue questionnaire (Checklist Individual Strength-20). As a control group, patients with c…

Robuvit®: improvement of fatigue in medical convalescence.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this registry study was the evaluation of symptoms of fatigue following supplementation with an oak wood extract (Robuvit®) after disappearance of acute symptoms. Robuvit®, with established antioxidant-antifatigue activity, has been successfully used in hepatic failure and in chronic fatigue syndrome: these conditions are characterized by weakness and fatigue and are broadly comparable to convalescence that is associated to increased oxidative stress. METHODS: The registry study lasted 3 weeks. After a period (7-10 days) of flu, during the post-disease period (3 days wi…

A Preliminary Review of Fatigue Among Rail Staff.

Background: Fatigue is a severe problem in the rail industry, which may jeopardize train crew's health and safety. Nonetheless, a preliminary review of all empirical evidence for train crew fatigue is still lacking. The aim of the present paper is, therefore, to provide a preliminary description of occupational fatigue in the rail industry. This paper reviews the literature with the research question examining the risk factors associated with train crew fatigue, covering both papers published in refereed journals and reports from trade organizations and regulators. It assesses the progress of …

Mononucleosis-related fatigue: supplementary management with Robuvit®.

BACKGROUND: Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is a common disease of adolescents and young adults, characterized by a specific triad of symptoms represented by fever, sore throat and lymphadenopathy. IM may also affect older adults, with different, more intense signs and symptoms such as fatigue, general malaise, and diffuse body pain. The aim of this four-week-registry study was to evaluate the effects of Robuvit® supplementation on the main consequences of mononucleosis, particularly fatigue, in otherwise healthy adults. METHODS: All patients enrolled in this registry study experienced an episo…

Chronic fatigue in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome-Hypermobile type.

Chronic fatigue is an important contributor to impaired health-related quality of life in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. There is overlap in the symptoms and findings of EDS and chronic fatigue syndrome. A proportion of those with CFS likely have EDS that has not been identified. The evaluation of chronic fatigue in EDS needs to include a careful clinical examination and laboratory testing to exclude common causes of fatigue including anemia, hypothyroidisim, and chronic infection, as well as dysfunction of major physiological or organ systems. Other problems that commonly contribute to fatigue in ED…

How to manage fatigue in fibromyalgia: nonpharmacological options.

The aim of this article is to suggest recommendations for the management of fatigue in fibromyalgia (FM) by reviewing and compiling findings of nonpharmacological treatment for fatigue in patients with FM. The management of fatigue in FM should incorporate regular physical exercise maintained for a longer period of time, which contributes to improved general health and facilitates coping with fatigue and other symptoms. The evidence is still low and the effect of exercise on fatigue in FM needs to be further studied. Patients with FM appear to benefit from general sleep hygiene advice and also…

Comprehensively understanding fatigue in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) experience a high persistence, prevalence, and severity of fatigue. There is currently only limited information regarding factors that contribute to fatigue in patients with MPNs. METHODS: A 70-item, Internet-based survey regarding fatigue was developed by MPN investigators and patients/advocates and hosted by the Mayo Clinic Survey Research Center. RESULTS: Fatigue was found to be prevalent and severe among international survey respondents (1788 respondents). Higher body mass index (P<.001), current use of alcohol (P<.001), and c…

Pharmacological treatments for fatigue associated with palliative care.

BACKGROUND: This review updates the original review, 'Pharmacological treatments for fatigue associated with palliative care' and also incorporates the review 'Drug therapy for the management of cancer-related fatigue'.In healthy individuals, fatigue is a protective response to physical or mental stress, often relieved by rest. By contrast, in palliative care patients' fatigue can be severely debilitating and is often not counteracted with rest, thereby impacting daily activity and quality of life. Fatigue frequently occurs in patients with advanced disease (e.g. cancer-related fatigue) and mo…

Sacral fatigue fracture in an amateur soccer player.

Sacral fatigue fractures represent a frequently overlooked cause of low-back and buttock pain in athletes. A high index of clinical suspicion and MRI utilization can provide the accurate diagnosis. A 38-year-old male amateur, midfielder, soccer player presented to our department with aggravating right buttock pain during the previous month, following an increase in training intensity and frequency on an artificial turf field. A point of maximal tenderness was demonstrated over the area of the right sacroiliac joint. No radiographic abnormalities were observed. MRI of the pelvis revealed the pr…

High dose thiamine improves fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

The majority of the patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience fatigue. Some observations indicate that fatigue and related manifestations concomitant with MS could be associated with an intracellular mild thiamine deficiency. We recruited 15 patients with MS who also experience fatigue and assessed the severity of the fatigue using the Fatigue Severity Scale. Although blood thiamine and thiamine pyrophosphate levels were within normal limit in all the patients, high-dose thiamine therapy administered orally or parenterally led to an appreciable improvement of the fatigue. The absence of…

Porcine placenta mitigates protein-energy malnutrition-induced fatigue.

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue can be caused by a deficiency of nutrition or immune function. The goal of this study was to identify the effects of porcine placenta extract (PPE) and its constituents, amino acids (glutamic acid, glycine, arginine, and proline), on protein-energy malnutrition (PEM)-induced fatigue. METHODS: Mice were administered a PEM diet and came to immunodeficient status. Simultaneously, the mice were administered PPE or amino acids and a forced swimming test (FST) was performed. We analyzed the levels of fatigue-related factors in serum, splenocytes, and muscles. RESULTS: In the FST…
