BACKGROUND: In developing countries bottle feeding has emerged a big public health problem while in developed countries the trend is opposite. Prevalence of breast feeding in Pakistan is 90-98% but in some subgroups of population it is as low as 60-80%. The objectives of the study were to determine the causes of non breast feeding in children less than six months of age in district Nowshera, and assess practice of starting first breast feeding to the newborn.
METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted in ten union councils of district Nowshera. A total of 305 children under six month age

BACKGROUND: A delay in reaching full enteral feeding is linked to poorer outcome in preterm neonates. Meconium retention has been viewed as a cause of bowel dysfunction in very low birth weight infants (VLBWI). Thus, adequate evacuation of meconium could help to promote feeding tolerance.
OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to determine the effect of the induction of early meconium evacuation on feeding tolerance in VLBWI.
METHODS: An observational study involving two subsequent periods was performed in inborn infants with birth weights of <1,500 g, before (control) and after (study) the induction of e

Background. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) increases the risk of myocardial ischemia, followed by increased perioperative risk of cardiovascular morbidity. We investigated whether reducing caloric intake reduces ischemic injury and myocardial dysfunction and affects the protective effects of the volatile anesthetic sevoflurane in diet-induced T2DM rats. Methods. Rats received a western (WD) or control diet (CD). Caloric intake was reduced by reversing WD-fed rats to CD. Myocardial function was determined with echocardiography. After 8 weeks of diet feeding, myocardial infarction was induced a

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is a gift from mother to child and has a wide range of positive health, social and cultural impacts on infants. The link between bottle feeding and the prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC) is well documented. In Aboriginal communities, the higher rates of ECC are linked with low rates of breast feeding and inappropriate infant feeding of high sugar content liquids.
METHODS: The Baby Teeth Talk Study (BTT) is one project that is exploring the use of four interventions (motivational interviewing, anticipatory guidance, fluoride varnish and dental care to expectan

BACKGROUND: Patients' inability to take oral nutrition calls for alternative feeding. In selected pediatric patients, traditional feeding tubes are not tolerated and jejunal feeding tubes can be obstructive. One option is a Roux-en-Y feeding limb. Our institution noted complications secondary to small bowel volvulus around this limb. Goals of this study were to review patients who experienced volvulus after Roux-en-Y creation, and to identify factors contributing to this complication.
METHODS: Institutional review board approval was obtained for a retrospective chart review. 25 patients were

AIMS: To study the effect of the type of antibiotic used in medicated diets against pathogens and the feeding level on the microbial biodiversity in the rabbit caecum.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Three groups of eight does were given a diet unsupplemented (NAB) or with 100 ppm of bacitracin (BAC) or tiamulin (TIA). Litter sizes of four does in each group were adjusted to five (LS5) or to nine (LS9), to manipulate their levels of feed intake. The feeding level strongly affected caecal microbiota in does fed on NAB and BAC diet, whereas the effect of the antibiotic was higher in TIA-supplemented anima

The knotting of an intragastric tube is a rare complication, and knotting of a feeding jejunostomy tube is rarer, and the removal or replacement of the tube is difficult. There are many reports on the removal of intragastric knotted tubes, but these methods cannot be applied for the removal of knotted feeding jejunostomy tubes, which do not have a natural orifice as large as the mouth to facilitate the introduction of instruments to correct the complication or remove the knotted tube. This is a stressful situation and doctors have to adopt strategies to resolve this problem safely and effectiv

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate child-feeding practices lead to child morbidity and mortality in many countries around the world. In many low- and middle-income countries, mothers often lack access to appropriate child-feeding counseling services within healthcare settings. While several studies have examined recommended infant and child feeding practices, there is insufficient information regarding the accessibility of child-feeding counseling services in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the accessibility of child-feeding counseling services and determinant factors among brea

OBJECTIVE: The role of timely nutritional support in the recovery of pediatric traumatic brain injury (PTBI) patients is crucial yet underexplored. The authors planned a retrospective study to investigate the timing of feeding initiation (early feeding [≤ 48 hours] or delayed feeding [> 48 hours]), feeding pattern, and causes of feeding delay/interruption in this cohort and studied the association of delayed feeding with outcomes in PTBI from a single center in a lower-middle-income country.
METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study included PTBI patients ≤ 15 years of age admitted to

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic ultrasound, education, and massage are the most common physical therapy interventions provided to mothers with breast symptoms. However, there is insufficient evidence on the effectiveness of the combination of these interventions. This study aimed to explore the effects of the combination of therapeutic ultrasound, education, and massage on breast symptoms in lactating women.
METHODS: This study was a single-blind randomized controlled trial. Postpartum lactating women aged from 21 to 45 with breast symptoms were recruited and randomly allocated to one of three groups

OBJECTIVES: Eating and weight disorders are severe and complex clinical conditions which, among other behaviors, include (attempts at) restrained eating, food avoidance, following dietary rules, and overeating. Comparable to women with obesity, restrained eaters (RE) without formal eating disorder diagnosis are worse at inhibiting their motor responses than unrestrained eaters (URE). According to neuroimaging studies, the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) is involved in inhibitory control which, in turn, could be improved by neuromodulation such as anodal transcranial direct current stimulat

BACKGROUND: Maternal stress is one modifiable variable that could influence mother-infant signaling and negatively affect breastfeeding and infant growth.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to test the hypothesis that relaxation therapy would reduce maternal stress and improve infant growth, behavior, and breastfeeding outcomes after late preterm (LP) and early-term (ET) delivery.
METHODS: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted in healthy Chinese primiparous mother-infant pairs after LP or ET delivery (34+0-37+6 gestation weeks). Mothers were randomly assigned to the intervention

Breastfeeding, use of pasteurised donor human milk when mother's own milk is unavailable and kangaroo mother care have independently proven benefits in improving survival of vulnerable sick babies. A triangulated approach called the Mother Baby Friendly Initiative Plus (MBFI+) model, bringing together the combined benefits of these proven interventions, was used to improve exclusive human milk feeding at health facilities through quality improvement and system strengthening approach. This quality improvement before-and-after uncontrolled study enrolled 5343 term and 278 very low birth weight (
