BACKGROUND: High birth weight (HBW) describes fetal birth weight of more than 4000 g. Infants with HBW have a high risk of developing neurological and developmental problems. Until recently, there were no studies in the literature that investigated the quality of spontaneous movements and the integrity of the developing nervous system in infants with HBW. The aims of this study were (1) to describe age-specific detailed early spontaneous movements in infants with HBW and (2) to compare the detailed early spontaneous movements of infants with HBW and normal birth weight (NBW).

Zebrafish embryos represent an attractive system for the study of early vertebrate neurogenesis. The embryos develop outside of the mother and are transparent allowing analysis at the cellular level in the living embryo during all phases of early neurogenesis. The teleostean neural tube is generated by a mechanism different from that of other vertebrates. A massive keel is formed first and the central canal appears by subsequent cavitation. Despite this, however, the organization of the neural plate and the neural keel resembles that of other vertebrates in many aspects. Oriented cell division

Massive acute thymic haemorrhage in the neonate occurs extremely rarely and is associated with haemorrhagic disease of the newborn. A 30 year old woman with an unremarkable previous obstetric history presenting at 37 weeks and 4 days gestation with the complaint of loss of fetal movement was found to have a male fetus with findings at necropsy of massive acute thymic haemorrhage, acute intracranial haemorrhage, and hydrops fetalis. This is the first report of massive acute thymic haemorrhage in utero. Massive thymic haemorrhage should be added to the reported causes of lethal non-immunological…

A 27-year old woman, primigravida, 33 weeks' gestation, presented with complaints of labor pain and absent fetal movement. A dead fetus in utero, abruptio placentae, and labor pain were diagnosed. Severe postpartum hemorrhage from uterine atony and disseminated intravascular cogulopathy was noted after spontaneous delivery of the baby and placenta. Bimanual uterine compression for 40 minutes was performed as a major procedure accompanied by uterotonic drugs, correction of hypovolemic shock and coagulopathy by crytalloid, blood, fresh frozen plasma. The patient had no complications when seen at…

The most severe manifestation of congenital ichthyosis presents itself in the form known as harlequin ichthyosis. Harlequin ichthyosis is characterized by a profound thickening of the fetal skin. Affected infants are born with a thick "horny shell" of dense, waxy, platelike scales with deep, irregular fissures covering the body. Contraction of the extremities is seen, along with deformities of the ears, eyes, mouth, and digits. This "armor" limits movement and compromises the skin's barrier defense, leaving the newborn at risk for metabolic abnormalities and infection. A case study of our unit

A recent publication by the Canadian Early and Mid-Trimester Amniocentesis Trial Group reported an increase in orthopaedic foot deformities in infants whose mothers underwent an amniocentesis from 11 to 12 + 6 gestational weeks versus a group sampled between 15 to 16 + 6 gestational weeks. Because the sampling of the former group was at the time of maximum foot growth and maximum acquisition of amniotic fluid, the authors hypothesize that the foot deformities are secondary to decreased fetal movement during a key phase in foot and ankle development.

BACKGROUND: Anthropomorphic phantoms play an important role in routine clinical practice. They can be used to calibrate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, control the diagnostic equipment quality, and reduce the acquisition time. The latter is especially critical for diagnosing fetal anomalies, which requires optimal image quality within the shortest possible time. This paper aims to develop an MRI fetal phantom and determine the materials that best mimic the magnetic resonance (MR) characteristics of its internal organs. Future phantom features will include simulations of fetal limb m

Infection caused by human parvovirus B19 (B19) often has mild yet wide-ranging clinical signs, with the course of disease usually defined as … manifestation of B19 infection during pregnancy. At the 27th week of gestation, a sudden change in fetal movement occurred in a previously healthy pregnancy. The examination of both fetus and the mother revealed newly formed fetal subdural hematoma of unknown etiology and ventriculomegaly. This case report describes a rare phenotype of very severe spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in a newborn who presented with reduced fetal movements in utero and significant respiratory distress at birth. The patient was homozygously deleted for exon 7 and exon 8 of the survival motor neuron gene 1. Very severe SMA should be considered in the differential diagnosis of respiratory distress at birth, and more research should be dedicated to investigate the genetic determinants of its widely variable phenotypes.

INTRODUCTION: PHPT in pregnancy is a rare condition that may be difficult to recognize due to nonspecific symptoms and physiologic changes that can mask hypercalcemia. Delayed diagnosis is associated with significant maternal and fetal morbidity.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old Spanish-speaking gravida 5 para 3 woman at 30 weeks gestation presented with decreased fetal movement in the setting of absent prenatal care. Evaluation revealed severe polyhydramnios, fetal growth restriction, and nonimmune fetal hydrops. Laboratory studies demonstrated hypercalcemia with elevated parathyroid hormone…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The quality of spectroscopic studies may be limited because of unrestricted fetal movement. Sedation is recommended to avoid motion artefacts. However, sedation involves side effects. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and quality of brain (1)H-MR spectroscopy in unsedated fetuses and to evaluate whether quality is dependent on the type of spectra, fetal presentation, GA, and/or fetal pathology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-five single-voxel spectroscopic studies of the fetal brain, performed at gestational weeks 19-38 at 1.5T, were evaluated retrosp…

Abdominal pregnancies are the implantation of gestation in some of the abdominal structures. This kind of pregnancies represents sevenfold m … resence of mass in hypogastria, no delimitations, pain with mobilization, no transvaginal bleed and fetal movements. Interruption of pregnancy is decided by virtue of severe oligohidramnios, retardation in fetal intrabdominal growth, and recurrent maternal abdominal pain. Surgical intervention was carried out for resolution of the obstetrical event, in which was …

Prenatal substance abuse is an ongoing concern with significant impact on neonatal health and development across socioeconomic lines. Meconium, passed by neonates during their first post-natal bowel movements, is a matrix unique to the developing fetus and contains a long history of prenatal metabolism. Over the last two decades, the use of meconium as a matrix for assessing prenatal exposure to drugs of abuse has yielded methods exhibiting higher sensitivity, easier collection, and a larger window of detection than traditional matrices. Recently, a method has been developed for the analysis o

We present an unusual case, in which a woman presenting with markedly decreased fetal movements at 29 weeks gestation following a recent increase in fundal height was noted sonographically to have fetal hydrops consisting of scalp edema, marked hepatomegaly, ascites, and polyhydramnios. No lethal structural congenital anomaly was noted. Admission laboratory examinations revealed a negative antibody screen and a negative RPR. Emergent cesarean section was performed due to prolonged fetal bradycardia during biophysical profile testing. The acidotic hydropic neonate weighing 1825 g was resuscitat…

OBJECTIVES: To address the clinical significance of sinusoidal heart rate (SHR) pattern and review its occurrence, define its characteristics, and explain its physiopathology.
BACKGROUND: In 1972, Manseau et al. and Kubli et al. described an undulating wave form alternating with a flat or smooth baseline fetal heart rate (FHR) in severely affected, Rh-sensitized and dying fetuses. This FHR pattern was called 'sinusoidal' because of its sine waveform. Subsequently, Modanlou et al. described SHR pattern associated with fetal to maternal hemorrhage causing severe fetal anemia and hydrops fetalis

BACKGROUND: Right atrial isomerism is a rare condition marked by congenital splenic aplasia and associated cardiovascular and visceral malformations. The etiology of this condition remains unclear. Owing to the severity of concomitant cardiovascular anomalies, survival into adulthood is uncommon, and successful pregnancy outcomes are exceedingly rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old woman with a history of right atrial isomerism and a single right ventricle, who had undergone total cavopulmonary connection (TCPC) at age 15, was admitted at 32 weeks’ gestation due to decreased fetal movements.…
