Livelihood diversification in managing catastrophic risks: evidence from flood-disaster regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan.

Pakistan's agricultural productivity is considered to be low despite several agriculture promotion policies. Such policies concentrate primarily on on-farm development and overlook rich prospects for off-farm diversification. Livelihood diversification of small-scale farmers plays a major role in reducing hunger and mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change. Therefore, this paper seeks to analyze livelihood diversification in managing catastrophic risks among rural farm households of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan. We have interviewed a total of 600 farm households through a st

Molecular detection of Cryptosporidium: an emerging parasite in different water sources of 2010 flood-affected district Nowshera, Pakistan.

Cryptosporidium is a water-borne zoonotic parasite worldwide, usually found in lakes and rivers contaminated with sewage and animal wastes, causing outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis. In this study, 300 water samples were collected from four designated places of flood-affected district Nowshera consist of different water sources to find out the prevalence of Cryptosporidium via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium was 30.33% (91/300) with more prevalent 44% in drain water and low 5% in bore/tube well water. The prevalence in open well and tap water was recorde

Ecological risk assessment of agricultural pesticides in the highly productive Ndop flood plain in Cameroon using the PRIMET model.

Flood plains can make a significant contribution to food security due to their rich agricultural and aquaculture potentials but the misuse of pesticides in these ecosystems may seriously threaten their sustainability. We have assessed the risk of commonly used pesticides by rice and vegetable farmers on two major streams in the Ndop flood plain in Cameroon using the PRIMET model. Thirty pesticide formulations were identified containing 17 active ingredients belonging to fungicides (7), herbicides (3), and insecticides (7). Out of these, five posed acute and/or chronic risks to the streams. Chl

[Characterization of microbial community in produced water from a petroleum reservoir subjected to alkali-surfactant-polymer ASP flooding].

Injection of alkali, surfactant and polymer (ASP) into oil reservoir can substantially increase oil recovery compared with water-flooding strategy. However, the effects of these agents on the microbial diversity and community structure, which is important for water management and corrosion control in oil industry, are hitherto poorly understood. Here, we disclosed the microbial diversity and community structure in the produced water collected from four producing wells of an ASP-flooded oilfield at Daqing, China, using high-throughput sequencing technique. Results showed that the average pH in

Physiologically-based toxicokinetic models help identifying the key factors affecting contaminant uptake during flood events.

As a consequence of global climate change, we will be likely facing an increasing frequency and intensity of flood events. Thus, the ecotoxicological relevance of sediment re-suspension is of growing concern. It is vital to understand contaminant uptake from suspended sediments and relate it to effects in aquatic biota. Here we report on a computational study that utilizes a physiologically based toxicokinetic model to predict uptake, metabolism and excretion of sediment-borne pyrene in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). To this end, data from two experimental studies were compared with the

Estimating the welfare loss to households from natural disasters in developing countries: a contingent valuation study of flooding in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Natural disasters have severe impacts on the health and well-being of affected households. However, we find evidence that official damage cost assessments for floods and other natural disasters in Vietnam, where households have little or no insurance, clearly underestimate the total economic damage costs of these events as they do not include the welfare loss from mortality, morbidity and well-being experienced by the households affected by the floods. This should send a message to the local communities and national authorities that higher investments in flood alleviation, reductio…

The place behind the case: leptospirosis risks and associated environmental conditions in a flood-related outbreak in Rio de Janeiro.

The environmental context in which a leptospirosis outbreak took place during the summer of 1996 in the Rio de Janeiro Western Region was examined by using spatial analysis of leptospirosis cases merged with socio-demographic data using Geographic Information System (GIS). Risk areas were mapped based on flood and solid waste accumulation information for the region. Incidence rates were calculated for each area by the division of number of cases per total population in the specific areas. Higher rates were observed for census tracts inside the flood risk area and in the vicinities of waste acc

Multi-objective optimization of sensor placement in urban drainage systems using flood observations derived from social media.

Urban flooding poses increasing risks to cities under climate change and rapid urbanization, making effective monitoring of Urban Drainage Systems (UDS) essential for flood early warning. Existing sensor placement methods largely depend on simulated hydraulic data and often neglect the trade-off between detection reliability and information redundancy. To address these limitations, this study constructs an empirical dataset by integrating social media texts, historical waterlogging records, and municipal drainage network data. A multi-objective optimization framework is then proposed, jointly

Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Effects on Maternal Health Service Delivery During Pregnancy and Childbirth in LMICs: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is a major global health challenge of the 21 st century associated with the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall and flooding. These extreme weather events are particularly disruptive in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), as they damage infrastructure, impede access to healthcare, and destabilize service delivery. Such disruptions heighten risks of missed or delayed antenatal care, reliance on unskilled obstetric care, and interruptions in postpartum care, contributing to adverse maternal and newborn outcomes.

Social media-driven multi-scale flood sensing: A systematic review of applications from global monitoring to community resilience.

With the acceleration of climate change and urbanization, floods have become increasingly frequent. Social media has emerged as a valuable data source for flood monitoring. However, current social media flood research is confined to a single spatial scale, overlooking the heterogeneity and methodological challenges of using such data across different spatial levels. This study proposed a multi-scalar analytical framework to systematically assess the current applications and future directions of social media in flood-related research. We adopted a semi-automated method supported by large langua…

Cell wall xyloglucan epitope modifications during flooding-induced root aerenchyma development in select cool-season legumes.

Characterizing the extracellular mechanisms plants use to adapt to water immersion could provide avenues for crop improvement in the face of periodic flooding. One such mechanism is hypoxia-induced aerenchyma formation. The formation of lysigenous aerenchyma occurs through programmed cell death (PCD) that may require the chemical modification of select polysaccharides in root cell walls. Currently, the precise mechanism of cell wall structural modification is not fully defined. To better characterize this mechanism, we investigated whether a relationship exists between modification of cell wal

Geospatial analysis of flooding events using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data: a tale of two South African cities.

The frequency and severity of floods have increased in the last five decades due to climate change and human activities, significantly impacting human lives, economies, and infrastructure. South Africa is among the most affected regions, primarily due to informal settlements, limited resources, and a weak capacity to respond to the growing flood risk, with annual impacts increasing. Earth Observation data offers crucial insights for flood monitoring and risk management, yet studies and proactive measures remain limited in the country. Therefore, this paper conducted a geospatial analysis of re…

Biodegradable and conventional microplastics differentially affected greenhouse gas emissions from a flooded paddy soil: Insight into metagenomic analysis.

Paddy soils are important sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs), and microplastics (MPs) are increasingly widespread in paddies. However, the type-dependent effects of biodegradable and conventional MPs on methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions remain unclear. Here, an incubation experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Polybutylene succinate (PBS), and polylactic acid (PLA) on GHG emissions and the involved mechanism was clarified. PLA significantly increased cumulative CH4 and CO2 emissions by 264% a

Risk and burden of adverse birth outcomes associated with flood exposure in China: A 4.4 million mother-infant cohort study.

The risks and attributable burden of adverse birth outcomes from flooding remain unclear. Here, we analyzed a nationwide cohort of over 4.4 million mother-infant pairs in China, matching a spatiotemporal flood database with multiple buffer zones centered on maternal delivery hospitals to assess the health risks of multi-window flood exposure before and during pregnancy. We found that flood exposure during the three months preconception and the first trimester significantly increased the risks of preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), small for gestational age (SGA), and term low birth we
