Genome-wide cyclin gene evolution in Arabidopsis and Brassica reveals polyploidization-driven duplication and flowering-time associations.

Cyclin genes are plant cell cycle regulators that play essential roles in growth, development, and reproduction. However, the evolutionary dynamics and genomic organization of cyclin genes across the Brassicaceae family remain poorly understood, particularly in the context of allotetraploid genome evolution. Here, we investigated the diversity, expansion mechanisms, and potential functional diversification of cyclin genes across ten Brassicaceae genomes, including four Arabidopsis and six Brassica species. A total of 1087 cyclin genes representing 23 cyclin types were identified. Comparative g

Gibberellin-Induced Early Flowering of Cnidium monnieri Advances the Arrival of Natural Enemies and Increases Their Abundance in Wheat Fields.

Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson (Apiaceae) is a well-known insectary plant in farmlands. Its vegetative and flowering stages can promote the migration of natural enemies. However, the arrival of natural enemies in crop fields often lags behind the establishment of pest populations. As gibberellin can accelerate plant growth and flowering, we investigated whether gibberellin treatment could advance the recruitment of natural enemies by altering the phenology of C. monnieri. Field experiments were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to evaluate the effects of different gibberellin concentrations on plant ph

Interactions, microstructures, and functional characterization of starch-based films reinforced with oxalic acid-modified honeysuckle flower powder.

Starch films often exhibit poor filler-matrix compatibility when reinforced with natural plant powders, which limits their functional performance. In this study, honeysuckle flower powder was modified via stepwise oxalic acid treatment to enhance its interfacial adhesion with corn starch. The treatment progressively removed pectin and polyphenols, thereby enriching lignocellulosic fibers (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin) and enhancing hydrogen bonding with starch. Among the modified fillers, the one treated with two-stage acid exhibited the best balance between polyphenol retention and fiber

Morphological regulation of a flower-like hollow β-cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks for enhanced hydrophilicity and chiral separation.

BACKGROUND: The development of chiral drug analysis methods is the foundation for evaluating drug efficacy and safety. Chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs) show great potential as the chiral stationary phases (CSPs) due to their structural tunability and high stability. However, the inherent hydrophobicity of CCOFs limits their application in capillary electrochromatography (CEC). RESULTS: This study reported the precise morphological regulation of 6-deoxy-6-mercapto-β-cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks (SH-β-CD COFs). By controlling synthesis parameters, two distinct structures w

Cyclic CAPA peptide analogs targeting the CAPA receptor induce male-specific mortality in western flower thrips.

BACKGROUND: Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, is a major agricultural pest that is difficult to manage because of its broad host range, cryptic behavior, rapid population growth, and increasing resistance to conventional insecticides. Insect neuropeptides and their cognate G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) have emerged as potential molecular targets for developing alternative pest management tools. In this study, CAPA (capability) neuropeptide analogs were evaluated for their ability to modulate signaling through the F. occidentalis CAPA receptor (CAPA-R) and to reduce thrip

Identification of the BrSK gene family in flowering Chinese cabbage and functional characterization of BrSK2 subfamily involvement in heat stress.

Glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) kinases are evolutionarily conserved regulators of plant development and stress signaling, yet their contributions to thermotolerance in cool-adapted Brassica crops remain poorly understood. Here, we identified 16 BrSK genes in the Caixin (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis var. parachinensis) genome, all harboring intact catalytic motifs indicative of functional kinase activity. Spatiotemporal expression profiling revealed preferential accumulation of BrSK transcripts in stem apices and floral organs during reproductive transition, while promoter analysis identifie

Identification of a major QTL and candidate gene for flowering time in industrial hemp via BSA-seq and fine mapping.

Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is a photoperiod-sensitive short-day crop, yet the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) governing flowering time remain poorly characterized, limiting molecular breeding efforts. To identify genomic regions controlling photoperiodic flowering, we performed bulked segregant analysis sequencing (BSA-seq) coupled with fine linkage mapping using an F2 population derived from a cross between day-neutral (Bubble Kush) and short-day (Aquawoman) accessions. Based on extreme flowering phenotypes, we pooled DNA from 50 early- and 50 late-flowering individuals. A major QTL,

A Leaf-Expressed TERMINAL FLOWER1 Homolog from Coffee with Alternative Splice Forms Alters Flowering and Branching in Arabidopsis.

Coffee is a perennial plant that exhibits asynchronous flowering while maintaining concomitant vegetative growth. This growth dichotomy affects fruit development and maturation time. To better understand flowering in coffee, we characterized a phosphatidylethanolamine binding protein (PEBP) homolog with high similarity to Arabidopsis thaliana TERMINAL FLOWER1 (TFL1). The interaction of TFL1 with floral regulator bZIP transcription factor, FD, forms a floral repressor complex that maintains inflorescence meristems in an indeterminate state. Arabidopsis TFL1 is expressed only in shoot apical mer

Oak masting under climate change: when spatially heterogeneous shifts in flowering phenology reshape pollen limitation.

Masting, the irregular, synchronised production of seeds within tree populations, drives forest regeneration and ecosystem dynamics. Its response to climate change may depend on phenological shifts in key reproductive stages, yet this link remains poorly understood. Using 30 yr of daily airborne pollen data from 20 temperate oak populations (Quercus petraea and Q. robur), we examined the relationship between shifts in pollen phenology and pollen limitation (estimated from annual pollen concentration). We analysed how these changes were driven by site-specific weather trends during the forcing

Transcriptomic analysis reveals molecular phenological changes during the flower-to-fruit transition in Vanilla planifolia Andrews (Orchidaceae).

BACKGROUND: The transition from flower to fruit, encompassing flower formation to fruit maturation, has been extensively studied in model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana. However, the Orchidaceae family, including Vanilla planifolia, exhibits a unique phenomenon known as post-pollination syndrome (PPS), where pollination initiates ovule development but often leads to premature ovary drop. This phenomenon significantly impacts the yield and stability of V. planifolia crops. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying PPS is essential for improving crop production. This study explores

Phytochemical composition and synergistic antimicrobial effects of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oils during flowering in an arid mediterranean region.

Rosmarinus officinalis has attracted significant attention due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, largely attributed to its bioactive essential oils (EOs). Several studies indicate that the flowering period is crucial for harvesting rosemary's aerial parts for optimal EO extraction. However, its prolonged flowering period complicates the determination of an optimal harvest time, potentially affecting yield, chemical composition, and efficacy. This study provides, for the first time, a systematic month-by-month evaluation of EO yield, chemical composition, and synergistic antimicrobi

Nitric oxide delays flower senescence in Cosmos sulphureus Cav. by improving antioxidant mechanisms and regulating nutritional dynamics.

Senescence marks the final phase in flower development involving a sequence of irreversible events that inevitably lead to death of the petals. The process is regulated by a coordinated interplay between different phytohormones, orchestrating various physiological and biochemical pathways in flowers. Nitric oxide (NO) is an unconventional growth regulator and novel signaling molecule, regulating various physiological processes in plants. We investigate the role of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, in regulating the postharvest senescence of isolated flowers of Cosmos sulphureus. Four set…
