BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies can impair proper growth and brain development in children. Data on the folate and vitamin B12 status of children aged 6-59 months in Guatemala are scarce. Identification of factors associated with higher prevalence of these micronutrient deficiencies within the population is needed for national and regional policymakers.
OBJECTIVE: To describe national and regional post-fortification folate and vitamin B12 status of children aged 6-59 months in Guatemala.
METHODS: A multistage, cluster probability study was carried out with natio

Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency causing neuropsychiatric and thrombotic manifestations, such as peripheral neuropathy, subacute combined degeneration of cord, dementia, ataxia, optic atrophy, catatonia, psychosis, mood disturbances, myocardial infarction and portal vein thrombosis are well known. This present report highlights an unusual presentation of vitamin B12 deficiency-psychotic disorder, extrapyramidal symptoms in a 12-year-old boy. His symptoms responded to parenteral vitamin B12 therapy. So with this report we emphasized that serum vitamin B12 and folate levels should be measured,

Biochemical evidence collected from both clinical and non-institutionalized populations indicate that iron and folate deficiencies frequently occur simultaneously. Supplementation trials of iron-deficient patients with either iron or iron and folate has helped to illustrate that a complex interrelationship exists between these two nutrients. Controlled animal trials in which dietary iron and folate content has been systematically manipulated reveal that iron deficiency can cause altered folate utilization. The impact of iron deficiency on folate metabolism is most dramatic during the reproduct

Pregnancy is one of the more important periods in life when increased micronutrients, and macronutrients are most needed by the body; both for the health and well-being of the mother and for the growing foetus and newborn child. This brief review aims to identify the micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) likely to be deficient in women of reproductive age in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), especially during pregnancy, and the impact of such deficiencies. A global prevalence of some two billion people at risk of micronutrient deficiencies, and multiple micronutrient deficiencies of ma

Impaired folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism (OCM) has emerged as a risk factor for several diseases associated with age-related cognitive decline, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown and thus hinder the identification of subpopulations most vulnerable to OCM disruption. Here we investigated the role of serine hydroxymethyltransferase 1 (SHMT1), a folate-dependent enzyme regulating de novo thymidylate biosynthesis, in influencing neuronal and cognitive function in the adult mouse. We observed Shmt1 expression in the hippocampus, including the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus

BACKGROUND: Serum folate levels are commonly ordered for multiple indications in the inpatient and emergency department settings. Since mandatory folic acid fortification in 1998, there has been a decreasing prevalence of folate deficiency in the United States.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the indications, rate of deficiency, charge and cost per deficient result, and change in management per deficient result in serum folate testing in inpatients and emergency department patients.
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of all inpatient and emergency department serum folate tests.

B vitamins act as cofactors for strategic metabolic processes. The SLC19 gene family of solute carriers has a significant structural similarity, transporting substrates with different structure and ionic charge. Three proteins of this family are expressed ubiquitously and mediate the transport of 2 important water-soluble vitamins, folate, and thiamine. SLC19A1 transports folate and SLC19A2 and SLC19A3 transport thiamine. PCFT and FOLR1 ensure intestinal absorption and transport of folate through the blood-brain barrier and SLC19A25 transports thiamine into the mitochondria. Several damaging g

In the past, food fortification along with nutritional education and the decrease in food costs relative to income have proven successful in eliminating common nutritional deficiencies. These deficiencies such as goiter, rickets, beriberi, and pellagra have been replaced with an entirely new set of "emergent deficiencies" that were not previously considered a problem [e.g., folate and neural tube defects (NTDs)]. In addition, the different nutrition surveys in so-called affluent countries have identified "shortfalls" of nutrients specific to various age groups and/or physiological status. Comp

Ultraviolet (UV) is an omnipresent environmental carcinogen transmitted by sunlight. Excessive UV irradiation has been correlated to an increased risk of skin cancers. UVB, the most mutagenic component among the three UV constituents, causes damage mainly through inducing DNA damage and oxidative stress. Therefore, strategies or nutrients that strengthen an individual's resistance to UV-inflicted harmful effects shall be beneficial. Folate is a water-soluble B vitamin essential for nucleotides biosynthesis, and also a strong biological antioxidant, hence a micronutrient with potential of modul

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation of serum folate, vitamin B(12) and ferritin levels to 1st and 2nd trimester serum screening markers.
METHODS: Fetal crown-rump length (CRL), nuchal translucency (NT), and first and second trimester serum screening tests of 228 pregnant women were obtained. In all cases, serum vitamin B(12), folic acid and ferritin levels were analyzed during the 11-14 week period. Levels below <15 µg/L, 3 ng/mL and 211 pg/mL were accepted as nutrient deficiency for serum ferritin, folic acid and vitamin B(12), respectively. Results of serum screening markers of women below a

Deoxyuridine suppression of labelled thymidine uptake tests were performed in the bone marrows of 58 patients with megaloblastic anaemia (haemoglobin less than 10.0 g/dl) and invariably gave values (range 10.3-58.8%) above the range in 16 control marrows (range 1.0-9.0%). Folinic acid corrected the test equally well in either folate or vitamin B12 deficiency, even at concentrations as low as 60 ng/ml. Folic acid also corrected the test equally well in either deficiency but was only effective at concentrations down to 5 microgram/ml. Vitamin B12 (100 microgram/ml) only corrected the test in vit

OBJECTIVES: Gastrointestinal involvement and impaired nutritional status are frequent in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Hereby, we hypothesised that micronutrients and/or prealbumin could be deficitary in SSc.
METHODS: Patients with SSc and very early SSc (veSSc) were prospectively included. Clinical assessment, data recording and quality controls followed EUSTAR standards. The UCLA SCTCGIT 2.0 questionnaire was applied and the serum levels of zinc, selenium, prealbumin, holotranscobalamin, folic acid were measured.
RESULTS: Half (52.4%) of the 176 patients with established SSc show

Two hundred Hausa primigravidae at Zaria were divided into five groups in a randomized double-blind trial of antenatal oral antimalarial prophylaxis, and haematinic supplements. Group 1 received no active treatment. Groups 2 to 5 were given chloroquine 600 mg base once, followed by proguanil 100 mg per day. In addition, group 3 received iron 60 mg daily, group 4 folic acid 1 mg daily, and group 5 iron plus folic acid. Forty-five percent were anaemic (haemoglobin (Hb) less than 11.0 g dl-1) at first attendance before 24 weeks of gestation, and malaria parasitaemia (predominantly Plasmodium falc

Atrophic glossitis (AG) is characterized by the partial or complete absence of filiform papillae on the dorsal surface of the tongue. AG may reflect the significant deficiencies of some major nutrients including riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, vitamin B12, folic acid, iron, zinc, and vitamin E. Moreover, protein-calorie malnutrition, candidiasis, Helicobacter pylori colonization, xerostomia, and diabetes mellitus are also the etiologies of AG. Our previous study found the serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA), thyroglobulin antibody (TGA), and thyroid microsomal antibody (TMA) positiviti

The role of the metals, iron and copper, and the vitamins E, folic acid, and B12 in the genesis of nutritional anemias in infancy have been reviewed. All are preventable. The precise requirements for each of these trace elements and vitamins in the small premature infant remain to be defined. The nonhematologic consequences of these nutritional deficiencies require further study. Anemia may prove to be the least important manifestation of the deficiency states.
