Opium Alkaloids in Harvested and Thermally Processed Poppy Seeds.

The opium alkaloids (morphine, codeine, thebaine, noscapine, and papaverine) have been detected on poppy seeds; they are widely used by the food industry for decoration and flavor but can introduce opium alkaloids into the food chain. Of the opium alkaloids found on poppy seeds, morphine, and codeine are the most pharmacologically active and have been detected in biological matrices collected in workplace and roadside drug testing resulting in positive opiate results. The European Food Safety Authority introduced an acute reference dose of 10 μg morphine/kg of body weight as a safe level for m

Chocolate Processed by Extrusion Cooking Affects Glucose and Lipid Metabolism in Humans: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Crossover Trial.

Promoting positive and well-being-centered eating behavior in humans has recently garnered considerable attention. If the postprandial metabolic response of nutrients, especially sugars that are deleterious to health, can be controlled through processing, we can enjoy food without restrictions. To our knowledge, no study has reported the effect of extrusion cooking on the digestive response of sugars other than starch. Hence, we aimed to examine the effects of consuming extrusion-processed chocolate on glucose, insulin, and triglyceride blood levels through a randomized, double-blind, crossove

Allergenic potency of various foods of mammalian origin in patients with α-Gal syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The α-Gal syndrome (AGS) is an emerging allergy to mammalian food caused by IgE-mediated reactions to the carbohydrate galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-Gal). Mammalian food sources contain α-Gal, but the amount differs. The objective of this study was to investigate the allergenic potency of various foods of mammalian origin among AGS patients. METHODS: Twenty-six AGS patients were included. Food extracts from innards, lean meats, processed meat products, milk, and whey were analyzed. Immunoblot, ELISA, immunofluorescence, and basophil activation test were used to determine the α-Gal

Food Salience and the Nutrition Transition in Kiribati: Urban-Rural and Socioeconomic Patterning of Food Preferences.

Kiribati is undergoing a nutrition transition as imported foods increasingly compete with traditional staples, yet the cultural patterning of food preferences remains poorly characterised. We analysed 2019 cross-sectional household survey data from 399 adults primarily responsible for food preparation. Three timed freelists captured favourite foods, traditional foods, and the three foods eaten most often. Smith's salience, cultural consensus analysis, hierarchical clustering, and multivariable linear regression characterised food preferences and socioeconomic correlates of the proportions of i

Sex differences in the stone tool-use behavior of a wild population of burmese long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis aurea).

We investigated sex differences in how Burmese long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis aurea) used stone tools to open shelled food items along the shores of two islands in Laemson National Park, Thailand. Over a 2-week period in December 2009, we collected scan and focal samples on macaques when they were visible along the shores and mangroves. We found females used stones more often while feeding and used smaller tools than males. Females also processed sessile oysters more than males, whereas males processed unattached foods more than females. It was unclear which sex was overall more pro

Food toxicology--from forensic to policy tool: an evolution from reactive to proactive action.

Since the nineteenth century, food toxicology has evolved in several ways. The analytical power of the food toxicologist has been increased. The concept of adulterated food was modified significantly. Most commodities are now processed and addition of numerous non-nutrient additives is legalised. Other "alien" compounds get introduced in the food chain from background contamination or during processing and distribution. This makes the task of the food toxicologist more complex. From forensic science food toxicology developed to a policy aid.

Counting the invisible: dietary inorganic phosphorus intake across different chronic kidney disease stages in elderly patients-a national insight.

BACKGROUND: There's still a gap in research on phosphorus intake for elderly patients with chronic kidney disease. Processed and ultra-processed foods provide convenient dietary options but are significant source of harmful inorganic phosphorus. This study attempts to evaluate total phosphorus intake in elderly chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients across different stages, focusing on dietary contribution of inorganic phosphorus, stratified into tertiles, from processed and ultra-processed foods. METHODS: Cross-sectional analytical study conducted using an adapted food frequency questionnaire

Microbial Control in the Processing of Low-Temperature Meat Products: Non-Thermal Sterilization and Natural Antimicrobials.

The safety and health of food have been persistent concerns, particularly about meat products. Low-temperature meat products refer to those that are processed at lower temperatures. Meat, rich in proteins and other nutrients, is highly susceptible to microbial contamination, leading to spoilage, particularly when processed at lower temperatures that increase storage and transportation requirements. In response to the limitations of conventional preservation methods, such as heat treatment and chemical bacteriostats, emerging preservation technologies are increasingly being adopted. These techn

Dietary patterns in pregnancy and effects on nutrient intake in the Mid-South: the Conditions Affecting Neurocognitive Development and Learning in Early Childhood (CANDLE) study.

Dietary patterns are sensitive to differences across socio-economic strata or cultural habits and may impact programing of diseases in later life. The purpose of this study was to identify distinct dietary patterns during pregnancy in the Mid-South using factor analysis. Furthermore, we aimed to analyze the differences in the food groups and in macro- and micronutrients among the different food patterns. The study was a cross-sectional analysis of 1155 pregnant women (mean age 26.5 ± 5.4 years; 62% African American, 35% Caucasian, 3% Other; and pre-pregnancy BMI 27.6 ± 7.5 kg/m(2)). Using food

The Western diet: a blind spot of eating disorder research?-a narrative review and recommendations for treatment and research.

Over the last 50 years, in parallel with the obesity epidemic, the prevalence of eating disorders has increased and presentations have changed. In this narrative review, we consider recent research exploring the implications of changing patterns of food consumption on metabolic and neurobiological pathways, a hitherto neglected area in eating disorder research. One of the major changes over this time has been the introduction of ultra-processed (NOVA-4) foods, which are gradually replacing unprocessed and minimally processed foods. This has resulted in the increased intake of various sugars an

Micro-Level Attention Bias and Affect Dynamics Predict Binge Eating and Subsequent Weight Change in Adults With Binge-Eating Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Affect regulation models posit that binge eating serves to reduce negative affect (NA) or increase positive affect (PA), and attention bias (AB) toward food cues may represent a cognitive mechanism that increases vulnerability to affect-driven binge eating. This study examined whether momentary AB toward high-calorie processed food cues strengthens associations between affect and binge-eating symptoms in daily life, and explored whether person-specific indices of these associations predict 6-month outcomes. METHOD: Adults with binge-eating disorder (BED) and subthreshold BED (N = 4
