Low-income Korean community women were assessed for factors relating to decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and fractures in order to determine appropriate health promotion programs. Factors associated with decreased BMD were menopause (OR=3.30, p<0.01), menarchal age (OR=2.01, p<0.05), thyroxin (T(4); OR=11.32, p<0.05), age (OR=2.19, p<0.1), marital status (OR=0.56, p<.01), oral contraceptive use (OR=2.18, p<.01), and tubal ligation (OR=3.30, p<0.1). BACKGROUND: Little is known about oncologic outcomes of patients with primary bone tumors complicated by a pathologic fracture and treated by limb salvage.

BACKGROUND: End-stage renal disease is often associated with altered bone metabolism.
METHODS: In order to investigate the determinant factors of bone mineral density (BMD) and the risk factors of fractures, we studied 70 patients; 26 women (23 post-menopausal) and 44 men, (mean+/-SD) aged 60.5+/-14.3 years, treated by standard haemodialysis (HD) for 6.4+/-6.8 years. The purpose of the present study was to determine the predictive ability of a single bone mineral density (BMD) measurement on a 25-year perspective. A group of 1076 women (age 20-78 years) had had their forearm BMD measured from 1970 to 1975. A comprehensive classification system has been proposed by the AO/ASIF Foundation for the classification of long bone fractures. After an explanatory talk and with the aid of an illustrated pamphlet, 18 orthopaedic surgeons were asked to classify 10 long bone fractures according to the AO system. The diagnosis fracture of the scaphoid bone based on mere X-ray examination is unreliable. A correct diagnosis of scaphoid fractures is essential for the prevention of avascular necrosis of the proximal fragment and of pseudo-arthrosis. Thirty-three patients with a clinically suspected scaphoid fracture and a normal radiograph were examined. These patients had supplementary 99mTc-MDP scintigraphy. The present study reviews the long-term results of immediate reconstruction and primary grafting in 49 complex orbital fractures. The clinical features of these injuries are defined, and methods of investigation and surgical correction are outlined. The residual postoperative abnormalities, including enophthalmos, strabismus, and telecanthus, are critically analyzed. Recent modifications in fracture fixation, in orbital cavity reconstruction, and in the use of various types of autogenous grafts are discussed in detail.

In adults pathological fractures of the femur are mostly caused by skeletal metastases. In our own collective of femoral fractures 58 were caused by skeletal metastases and five by multiple myeloma. Average age was 59.8 years, women prevailed. In most of the metastatic fractures breast cancer was found to be the primary tumour. Miniplates were used in the treatment of 66 patients with facial bone fractures. Follow-up (mean, 12 months) disclosed that complications occurred only in cases of mandibular fracture: there were five instances of wound dehiscence, two of infection, and two of occlusal disharmony. We investigated the relationship of CT determined vertebral bone mineral density (BMD), type of renal osteodystrophy, N terminal PTH levels and fracture history in 31 dialysis patients. BMD for patients with bone biopsy documented osteitis fibrosa was 1.6 standard deviation (SD) above the normal value for age and sex matched controls, while those patients with low turnover osteodystrophy had a mean BMD 1.2 SD below normal (p less than 0.0001). Three patients with osteitis fibrosa who had previously been treated with prednisone had a low BMD (1.8 SD below normal, different than O, p = 0.0015).
