Pott puffy tumor is an osteomyelitis of the frontal bone with the development of a subperiosteal abscess manifesting as a puffy swelling of the forehead or scalp. It is believed to occur as a complication of frontal sinusitis. The modern antibiotic era has made it a rarely encountered entity. This case describes a 4-year-old boy who presented in status epilepticus secondary to Pott puffy tumor.

Advances in the surgical approach to the orbital fossa have resulted in an increase in the cure of tumors involving the optic nerve and the external ocular muscles. In the past 10 years we have encountered 12 cases with orbital fossa tumors, excluding ocular tumors and inflammatory disease case. After tumor removal surgery, new neurological deficits such as total ophthalmoplegia were caused in many cases, where surgery was performed by classical Krönlein's technique or Dandy's transfrontal approach. So we thought that a new method for tumor removal should be contrived to improve postoperative

A modification of the supraorbital keyhole approach, the eyebrow incision-minisupraorbital craniotomy with orbital osteotomy, is described. Unique to this approach is a one-piece supraorbital craniotomy, measuring 2.5 x 3.5 cm, that incorporates the orbital rim and roof and the frontal process of the zygomatic bone through an eyebrow incision. The orbital osteotomy facilitates view of the anterior and middle cranial fossa through the operating microscope, as well as the maneuverability of instruments through a small craniotomy. A pericranial flap is elevated with its base at the orbit and used

The frontal skull base represents an important barrier between the intracranial structures and the nasal sinuses preventing rhinoliquorrhea, ascending infections and brain prolaps. We reconstructed complete frontal skull base defects after interdisziplinary oncosurgery using a "Galea Periost – Calvaria Split – Sandwich (GAP-CAS) technique" with one half of the galea frontalis myofasccial flap torn to the nasal cavity, in-between the bone graft with the other half of the galea flap on top. By this technique it was possible to sufficiently cover the frontal skull base preventing cerebrospinal flu

Balloon sinuplasty has been licensed for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis since 2006. Balloon dilation enlarges the sinus ostium by effecting tiny fractures of the surrounding bone and compressing soft tissue such that no mucosa is removed. We believe this to be the ideal technique for achieving drainage of an acutely infected frontal sinus when surgical intervention is required. We report the application of this new technique in a 32-year-old female with acute frontal sinusitis. The frontal sinus was successfully cannulated and drained. Post-operative irrigation was achieved using a mo

One patient with a solitary plasmacytoma of the frontal bone was treated with complete surgical resection. To reconstruct the large calvarial defect, a split-thickness calvarial graft was harvested from the parietal area and secured in place with miniplates. Solitary plasmacytomas of the calvaria are not common. Clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, therapeutic approaches, and prognosis are discussed.

The use of calcium sulfate (plaster of Paris) has been advocated to repair bony defects because of its unique capability of stimulating osteoneogenesis. Plaster of Paris can be used as a bony alloplast, and it can be analyzed histologically. Sinus roentgenograms and technetium Tc 99m medronate bone scanning further support the use of plaster of Paris as an alloplast and assess its osteoneogenic capacity when implanted in the frontal sinus of dogs; complete bone regeneration was demonstrated in six dogs within four to six months. The use of plaster of Paris for bone reconstruction in the head a

Frontal sinus mucoceles may present many years after traumatic injuries or surgical procedures involving the frontal bone, but have been rarely reported after fronto-orbital advancement. We describe a case of frontal sinus mucocele development in a 43-year-old patient with Apert syndrome who underwent fronto-orbital advancement as a child. This was treated with resection and free fibula osteomuscular flap reconstruction. Computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques were used to virtually plan the procedure and guide the osteotomies intraoperatively. Follow-up at 1 year postoperatively re…

To improve our understanding of hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI), we investigated whether HFI was accompanied by changes in the postcran … s and altered bone structure in women with HFI was localized only on the skull, particularly on the frontal bone, probably due to specific properties of its underlying dura. Bone loss in the postcranial skeleton showed the same pattern in postmenopausal women with HFI as in those without HFI. Recording of HFI in medical records can be helpful in distinguishing …

Wormian bones, also known as intrasutural bones, are present as an anatomical variation in healthy individuals. However, a higher than the usual incidence can be an important feature of some congenital pathological conditions. In this study we describe a case of an adult cranium with multiple Wormian bones. The cranium was a single sample obtained from an archaeological excavation in Vinitsa, Northeastern Bulgaria, and probably dated in the Chalcolithic. The Chalcolithic is a period of human history connected with discovering and using of copper. Actually, it is a transitional phase between th

A boy in his middle childhood presented with a gradually enlarging, mildly tender swelling in the left frontal region, noticed after minor trauma. Skull radiograph and non-enhanced CT revealed a diffuse sclerotic lesion involving the left frontal bone and overlying subcutaneous soft tissue, suggestive of an intraosseous haemangioma. Contrast-enhanced MRI showed an expansile, hypointense lesion in the frontal bone on the left side with enhancing extraosseous components and a small extra-axial cyst. FNAC findings were consistent with meningioma. A complete resection of the tumour was performed. …

Frontal sinus osteoma accompanied by intracranial mucocele and local hyperostosis frontalis interna has never been reported. A 47-year-old woman presented with a 3-month history of intermittent headache. Physical examination revealed no neurologic abnormality. Contrasted magnetic resonance imaging showed a frontal heterogeneously enhanced lesion with adjacent nonenhanced cyst. Computed tomography showed a bone density mass, which was accompanied by local hyperostosis frontalis interna, which filled the left frontal sinus and extended intracranially. The patient underwent a left frontobasal cra

A 59-year-old male presented with a large cholesterol granuloma arising from the frontal sinus manifesting as a large, fluctuated, soft mass in his brow, compressing left eye. Skull radiography showed dilation of the frontal sinus. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic mass extending into the left orbit and anterior cranial fossa. Gross inspection at the frontal craniotomy showed mucinous, dark green fluid intermingled with shining material. The histological diagnosis was cholesterol granuloma with epithelial lining. Large cholesterol granuloma with facial deform

A case is reported of a woman presenting with a firm, tender right frontal lump. Ultrasound showed a small, irregular subgaleal mass with tiny bone surface perforations. Color Doppler ultrasound demonstrated compression-decompression induced alternating flow signals, indicating flow and reflux through the bone lesion. CT revealed an expansile osteolytic frontal lesion with a honeycomb pattern, consistent with an intraosseous venous malformation, which was confirmed histologically. The added value of compression-decompression color Doppler ultrasound in low‑flow calvarial vascular malformations
