Relapses of chronic suppurative frontal sinusitis after surgery are mainly associated with disorders of the newly constructed frontal-nasal anastomosis. Traditional methods of this intervention are inefficient. This paper presents a novel procedure of forming a communication between the frontal sinus and the nasal cavity by means of a combined allograft (made of a freeze-dried artery and titanium nickelide spiral having a shape memory effect).

BACKGROUND: The function of the paranasal sinuses is a topic of debate. One hypothesis suggested has been that sinuses act as a "crumple zone," serving to protect the contents of the head from impact. In this study, we examine the interactions of the frontal sinus and the brain in the setting of head trauma. Our formal hypothesis is that frontal sinus volume is less in head trauma patients with contusion than in head trauma patients without contusion.
METHODS: Computed tomographic (CT) scans of patients who sustained blunt head trauma performed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center f

The frontal sinuses of 143 Eskimo skulls from two sites in the Hudson Bay region of Canada were examined radiographically. No between-site or sex differences were noted in the size of the sinuses. On average, the sinuses are small and often bilaterally absent. The Canadian samples have smaller sinuses than reported for Alaskan Eskimos or American Indian groups.

You suffer from "sinus". Medical treatment isn't getting you better, and now you need surgery. It is better that you be treated surgically today rather than as in the past. Five years ago, surgery meant an incision through the eyebrow, with probable numbing of the forehead, in order to relieve the pain of acute frontal sinusitis; or a long eyebrow incision, or shaving the front part of the scalp and pulling down the forehead skin from the skull was the procedure of choice for chronic disease in these sinuses. If the cheek sinuses were chronically diseased, an incision was made through the gums…

A research that tested the methods suitable for comparing ante- and post-mortem radiographic patterns of frontal sinuses concluded that superimposition should be followed as a stringent method for establishing individual identification. We verified the practical relevance of prescribing superimposition by superimposing ante- and post-mortem frontal sinus patterns recorded in case situations as well as simulated ante- and post-mortem of frontal sinus patterns recorded using archived skulls. For superimposition, the wipe facility available in the vision mixer was employed in addition to the mix

Osteomas are the most frequent benign tumors of the paranasal sinuses. They often grow in the frontal sinus near the nasofrontal duct. They remain frequently asymptomatic and they tend to be an incidental finding on radiographic studies. Rarely, they extend out of the sinus limits. Two cases with neuro-ophthalmological complications are reported and discussed. A 19-year-old female presented with a progressive left visual impairment and orbital bone deformity. A CT-scan revealed a large calcified mass in both frontal sinuses, with left intraorbital and frontobasal extension. A 21-year-old man s

Osteoma represents the most common benign neoplasm of the nose and paranasal sinuses. The etiology of osteomas is uncertain and the majority occur in the frontal. ethmoid, and maxillary sinuses in that order. We present a 14-year-old male with a large frontoethmoid osteoma that required frontal sinus cranialization and pericranial bone graft reconstruction following removal. The osteoma recurred 6 months postoperatively and was excised. Treatment alternatives and a review of the literature are presented.

Mucoceles are defined as chronic, cystic lesions in the paranasal sinuses. When the mucocele content becomes infected, the lesion is defined as mucopyocele. Most mucoceles are located in the frontal and anterior ethmoid sinuses and normally they involve the frontal-ethmoid complex, expanding to the superior-medial region of the orbit, leading to ocular disorders; maxillary sinus presentation is rare. In the present article, the authors described a rare case of mucopyocele in the maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic endonasal Draf II frontal sinusotomy is indicated for a variety of pathologies such as mucocele and non-responsive chronic frontal sinusitis. However, this approach is challenged and controversial. The objectives were to evaluate the advantages, disadvantages, indications, and rate of complications of this approach, without the use of a navigation system.
METHODS: The files and computed tomography (CT) scans of 25 patients who underwent endoscopic endonasal Draf II sinusotomy at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center between 1999 and 2002 were reviewed.
RESULTS: Thirty-one fronta…

The objective result is to obliterate the frontal sinus by a neo-osteogenic tissue, which develops behind the composite multifractured osteoperiosteal flap (CMOF) tailored from the anterior wall's bone cortex of the frontal sinus in the New Zealand rabbit model. In this study, as surgical objects 4 New Zealand rabbits were used. First, in each animal, the CMOF was formed from the anterior wall's bone cortex of the frontal sinus. After obtaining the CMOF, the remainder of the cortical bone of the anterior wall was removed by a drill. This procedure provided an anteriorly opened frontal sinus ca

OBJECTIVES: Because of its location and the fragility of its physiology, the frontal sinus is the first of the facial sinuses to cause complications. In this context, orbital sepsis, cranial vault osteitis, meningitis, cerebral abscess, longitudinal sinus thrombophlebitis can occur. A more uncommon consequence of frontal sinusitis is isolated epilepsy.
METHODS: We report two cases of patients admitted in our department after a generalised epilepsy seizure with, on the CT-scan, an opacity of the frontal sinus with a posterior wall lysis.
RESULTS: We operated on quickly both patients after the…

The frontal, caudal maxillary, and rostral maxillary sinuses of 10 equine cadavers were examined endoscopically, and the findings were confirmed by sinusotomy. Similar endoscopic examinations were performed in five conscious, adult horses by using sedation and local anesthesia. Useful portals of entry for the arthroscope in adult horses were: for the frontal sinus, 60% of the distance in a lateral direction from midline to the medial canthus and 0.5 cm caudal to the medial canthus; for the caudal maxillary sinus, 2 cm rostral and 2 cm ventral to the medial canthus; and for the rostral maxillar

OBJECTIVE: Frontal sinus surgery continues to challenge even the most experienced endoscopic sinus surgeon. Revision frontal sinus surgery is even more challenging. The use of stents in frontal sinus surgery has long been described, as an attempt to decrease the incidence of synechiae and stenosis.
METHOD: This study included five patients who had previously undergone functional endoscopic sinus surgery but suffered recurrence of frontal sinusitis. Two had bilateral disease. Double J stents were used after endoscopic frontal sinusotomy. The stents were left in place for six months.

A case of cholesteatoma of the ethmoid extending to the orbit is reported. These cholesteatomas of facial sinuses are rarely reported, those documented involving localization in maxillary or frontal, or ethmoido-frontal or ethmoido-maxillary sinuses. Primary perisinusal cholesteatomas of embryonic origin must be distinguished from the rarer secondary iatrogenic or post-traumatic lesions. Histopathology allows distinction between epidermoid cysts and cholesterol type granulomas. Treatment is by surgery using a wide approach.

Pott's puffy tumor is a potential complication of acute frontal sinusitis, characterized by subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. It can be managed with a combination of open and endoscopic sinus surgery and intravenous antibiotic therapy. In the current report, a 15-year-old male presented with a classic case of Pott's puffy tumor which was managed with bilateral ethmoidectomies, frontal sinusotomies, and frontal sinus trephination, resulting in discharge on intravenous antibiotic therapy and subsequent complete resolution of symptoms.

We describe the first case of a subperiosteal orbital hematoma complicating acute barotraumatic frontal sinusitis during a plane landing. A 38-year-old woman presented with a sudden-onset and intense left periorbital pain during a plane landing. Few hours after a commercial flight landing, she presented a delayed left periorbital ecchymosis and left subperiosteal orbital hematoma. An exclusively endoscopic approach effectively drained both the frontal submucosal and orbital subperiosteal hematomas. This approach not only resolved the sinus pathology but also restored ocular function, with sign…

BACKGROUND: The anatomy of the paranasal sinus is significantly different between adults and children, and surgeons must be aware of these differences to safely perform pediatric functional endoscopic sinus surgery. The purpose of this study was to determine the normal dimensions of the paranasal sinuses during development using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data compiled from the largest cohort to date.
METHODS: The records of 2025 children, aged 0-18 years, who underwent cranial MRI, were examined retrospectively and 1452 patients with no history of sinus disease were included in the stu

Ultrasound as a diagnostic aid in the evaluation of the sinuses has been a controversial issue. Sensitivities have been reported from 29% to 100% and specificities from 55% to 99%. These wide variations in results from previous studies may have resulted from technical differences. However, the "gold standard" most often used for comparison has been a Water's view radiograph, which has been shown to correlate poorly with intraoperative and CT scan findings. To our knowledge, no one in the English language literature has evaluated sonography of the sinuses with computed tomography as the gold st
