Neuroimaging of Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder.

Idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is a parasomnia characterized by the loss of muscle atonia and the presence of undesirable motor manifestations during rapid eye movement sleep. Research findings have shown that iRBD is a prodromal stage of synucleinopathies such as Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. A wide array of neuroimaging techniques have improved our understanding of the prodromal stage of these diseases in patients with iRBD, and identified potential biomarkers. In this chapter, we summarize current knowledge about f

Neuroimaging characteristics of patients with focal hand dystonia.

NARRATIVE REVIEW: Advances in structural and functional imaging have provided both scientists and clinicians with information about the neural mechanisms underlying focal hand dystonia (FHd), a motor disorder associated with aberrant posturing and patterns of muscle contraction specific to movements of the hand. Consistent with the hypothesis that FHd is the result of reorganization in cortical fields, studies in neuroimaging have confirmed alterations in the topography and response properties of somatosensory and motor areas of the brain. Noninvasive stimulation of these regions also demonstr

Premature and early menopause and neuroimaging biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Premature and early menopause involve ovarian hormone deprivation, which may contribute to later-life vulnerability to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. Multimodal neuroimaging biomarkers provide a means of detecting structural, microstructural, functional, and molecular brain changes before clinical symptoms emerge. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic search of PubMed. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS: Neuroimaging modalities included in vivo structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (n = 16), func

[The neurobiological foundations of learning disabilities].

INTRODUCTION: Learning disabilities constitute a heterogeneous group of disorders that involve significant alterations in different cognitive domains (acquisition and use of language, reasoning, mathematical skills, visuospatial abilities, and so forth) that are not accounted for by a low level of intelligence, inadequate sociocultural development or lack of academic opportunities. They result from an alteration in basic psychological processes, developmentally linked to an alteration in the central nervous system. Current functional neuroimaging techniques have made it possible to develop a n…

The role of functional magnetic resonance imaging in brain surgery.

New functional neuroimaging techniques are changing our understanding of the human brain, and there is now convincing evidence to move away from the classic and clinical static concepts of functional topography. In a modern neurocognitive view, functions are thought to be represented in dynamic large-scale networks. The authors review the current (limited) role of functional MR imaging in brain surgery and the possibilities of new functional MR imaging techniques for research and neurosurgical practice. A critique of current clinical gold standard techniques (electrocortical stimulation and th…

A Causal Association Study Between Brain Imaging Features and the Risk of Large Artery Atherosclerosis: A Two-sample Mendelian Randomization Study.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a complex disease influenced by genetic and environmental factors, large artery atherosclerosis (LAS) has the highest proportion among the three subtypes of IS. Neuroimaging is an important examination for ischemic stroke. This study aims to systematically evaluate the causal relationships between various neuroimaging features and LAS risk using Mendelian randomization (MR). We performed a two-sample MR analysis using genetic data from large-scale genome-wide association studies. Exposure data included structural MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, and resting-state fMRI fea

Frontostriatal salience network expansion in individuals in depression.

Decades of neuroimaging studies have shown modest differences in brain structure and connectivity in depression, hindering mechanistic insights or the identification of risk factors for disease onset1. Furthermore, whereas depression is episodic, few longitudinal neuroimaging studies exist, limiting understanding of mechanisms that drive mood-state transitions. The emerging field of precision functional mapping has used densely sampled longitudinal neuroimaging data to show behaviourally meaningful differences in brain network topography and connectivity between and in healthy individuals2-4,

Resting-state functional brain alterations in functional dyspepsia: Protocol for a systematic review and voxel-based meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and significantly influences patients' quality of life. Many studies have found that patients with FD show significant functional abnormalities in multiple brain regions. However, these functional cerebral abnormalities are not fully consistent. This protocol aims to qualitatively and quantitatively assess and synthesize the functional cerebral abnormalities found in FD. METHODS: A systematic search will be conducted in 4 electronic databases (Medline, Web of Science, EMBASE, and the

An uncommon case of random fire-setting behavior associated with Todd paralysis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The association between fire-setting behavior and psychiatric or medical disorders remains poorly understood. Although a link between fire-setting behavior and various organic brain disorders has been established, associations between fire setting and focal brain lesions have not yet been reported. Here, we describe the case of a 24-year-old first time arsonist who suffered Todd's paralysis prior to the onset of a bizarre and random fire-setting behavior. CASE PRESENTATION: A case of a 24-year-old man with a sudden onset of a bizarre and random fire-setting behavior is reported. T

The role of neuroimaging in predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes of preterm neonates.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a safe and high-resolution neuroimaging modality that is increasingly used in the neonatal population to assess brain injury and its consequences on brain development. It is superior to cranial ultrasound for the definition of patterns of both white and gray matter maturation and injury and therefore has the potential to provide prognostic information on the neurodevelopmental outcomes of the preterm population. Furthermore, the development of sophisticated MRI strategies, including diffusion tensor imaging, resting state functional connectivity, and magneti

Abnormal functional lateralization and cooperation in primary angle-closure glaucoma correlate with cell type-specific transcriptional signatures.

BACKGROUND: Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) damages retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and is associated with neurodegeneration. This study used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to analyze hemispheric lateralization and cooperative functional alterations in PACG. Machine learning assessed the classification efficacy of neuroimaging indicators, while integrated transcriptomics described spatial relationships between neuroimaging changes and genes, neurotransmitters, and cell types. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI data were collected from 101 subjects (44 patients with PA

Evidence of Potential Mechanisms of Acupuncture from Functional MRI Data for Migraine Prophylaxis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the clinical neuroimaging evidence pertaining to the potential mechanisms of acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis. RECENT FINDINGS: From a descriptive perspective, converging evidence from recent neuroimaging studies, mainly from functional MRI (fMRI) studies, has demonstrated that when compared with sham acupuncture, verum acupuncture could normalize the decrease of the functional connectivity of the rostral ventromedial medulla-trigeminocervical complex (RVM/TCC) network, frontal-parietal network, cingulo-opercular networks, and default mode network and could

Altered sensorimotor activation patterns in idiopathic dystonia-an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of functional brain imaging studies.

Dystonia is characterized by sustained or intermittent muscle contractions causing abnormal, often repetitive, movements or postures. Functional neuroimaging studies have yielded abnormal task-related sensorimotor activation in dystonia, but the results appear to be rather variable across studies. Further, study size was usually small including different types of dystonia. Here we performed an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of functional neuroimaging studies in patients with primary dystonia to test for convergence of dystonia-related alterations in task-related activity …

A Spatio-temporal Model for Detecting the Effect of Cocaine Use Disorder on Functional Connectivity.

Drug addiction can lead to many health-related problems and social concerns. Researchers are interested in the association between long-term drug usage and abnormal functional connectivity. Functional connectivity obtained from functional magnetic resonance imaging data promotes a variety of fundamental understandings in such association. Due to the complex correlation structure and large dimensionality, the modeling and analysis of the functional connectivity from neuroimage are challenging. By proposing a spatio-temporal model for multi-subject neuroimage data, we incorporate voxel-level spa

The functional specialization of the planum temporale.

The planum temporale (PT) is an anatomically heterogeneous area with several architectonic subdivisions and extensive connections with other parts of the brain. Here I review a functional MRI study investigating the role of a functionally defined area (Spt) within the left PT in speech motor processing and discuss the functional properties of PT regions in the context of findings from recent neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies.

Neuroplasticity after traumatic brain injury: mechanisms and clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a leading cause of death and long-term neurological disability worldwide. Functional recovery after TBI depends largely on neuroplasticity, the brain's capacity for structural and functional reorganisation. While advances in acute neurocritical care have improved survival, optimising long-term outcomes requires a clearer understanding of how surgical, rehabilitative, pharmacological, neuromodulatory, and computational strategies influence plastic mechanisms across recovery phases. AIM: To synthesise current experimental and clinical evidence on

Determinants of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Efficacy in Tobacco Use Disorder: A Pre-Registered Study.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a promising treatment for tobacco use disorder (TUD). Although at a group level, active stimulation outperforms sham, at an individual level, variability exists in clinical response. The behavioral and neurobiological factors that differentiate those who respond to rTMS from those who do not remain unclear. To explore individual factors that influence acute responses to rTMS, N = 60 human participants received one session of rTMS to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and to a control region (visual cortex; V5) in a randomized order
