A variety of novel 6-arylsubstituted benzo[j]phenanthridine- and benzo[g]-pyrimido[4,5-c]isoquinolinequinones were synthesized from 1,4-naphthoquinone, aryl-aldehydes and enaminones via a two-step synthetic approach. Considering the importance of tropical almond nuts as a snack item, a study was conducted to identify the flavour volatiles and acrylamide generated during the roasting of the nuts. Furosemide, a loop diuretic, causes hepatic necrosis in mice. Previous evidence suggested hepatotoxicity arises from metabolic bioactivation to a chemically reactive metabolite that binds to hepatic proteins. The literature was reviewed to assess the relationship between the lipid adjusted concentration in human serum and breast milk (expressed as the serum/milk ratio) of a broad range of POPs in paired samples.
