Integrating CBPR and Implementation Science to Develop a PrEP-Promotion Intervention for Black Transgender Women.

Black/African American transgender (trans) women experience disproportionately high rates of HIV, yet few evidence-based interventions are designed specifically for them. This study outlines the development of the Sisters United intervention through the adaptation of ChiCAS, an evidence-based intervention for trans Latinas. Sisters United promotes use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), condoms, and medically supervised gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) among Black/African American trans women. Integrating community-based participatory research and implementation science, our systematic

Differences in phenotypic and functional aging trajectories among people aging with disability and the US general population.

BACKGROUND: People aging with disability (PAwD) may experience distinct life course exposures that impact their aging trajectories, yet the extent to which these trajectories differ from those of the US general population remains understudied. This study aimed to investigate the impact of long-term disability on phenotypic and functional aging trajectories, and assess the role of key demographic and social determinants on those trajectories. METHODS: Data from the 2006-2020 waves of the Health and Retirement Study were used. Phenotypic aging was measured by the metabolic dysfunction risk scor

Investigating Disparities in Prescription Drug Use Among Mexican Americans and Non-Hispanic Whites.

BACKGROUND: Mexican Americans are less likely than non-Hispanic Whites to report prescription drug use. This study explores mediating factors, disparities within chronic conditions, and variations in prescription drug use by nativity. METHODS: We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2016). Using survey-adjusted logistic regression models adjusted for age and gender, we estimated odds ratios (OR) for the association between ethnicity and prescription drug use in the past 30 days. Mediation analyses identified factors explaining this association. We also

Cannabis use among sexual minority adults: insights from recent U.S. nationally representative data.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis use among sexual minority (SM) populations, particularly through vaping (CV) and non-vaping (NVC) modes, has become increasingly relevant amid shifting legal and cultural norms. However, limited research has examined how these modalities relate to multidimensional aspects of sexual orientation. This study addresses this gap by exploring the associations between sexual identity, sexual attraction, and identity-attraction concordance or discordance with past 30-day CV and NVC among U.S. adults aged 18-64. METHODS: This study analyzed data from 2022 National Survey on Drug

Global disparities in artificial intelligence-based mammogram interpretation for breast cancer: A scientometric analysis of representation, trends, and equity.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. Artificial intelligence (AI) shows promise for improving mammogram interpretation, especially in resource-limited settings. However, concerns remain regarding the diversity of datasets and the representation of researchers in AI model development, which may affect the models' generalizability, fairness, and equity. METHODS: We performed a scientometric analysis of studies published in 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2023 that used screening or diagnostic mammograms for BC

Mapping equity at the gateway to surgical training: National CST selection outcomes in 2024.

BACKGROUND: Differential attainment (DA), defined as unexplained variation in educational outcomes, persists throughout medical training. This study investigates whether demographic characteristics are associated with differences in the likelihood of receiving a Core Surgical Training (CST) offer during the 2024 UK national selection round. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of anonymised applicant-level data from UK-wide CST recruitment was performed. All applicants with complete demographic and outcome data were included. The primary outcome was the offer of a CST training po

Global Epidemiology of Vector-Borne Parasitic Diseases: Burden, Trends, Disparities, and Forecasts (1990-2036).

Vector-borne parasitic diseases (VBPDs), including malaria, schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, African trypanosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, and onchocerciasis, impose a significant global health burden. This study analyzes the global disease burden of VBPDs from 1990 to 2021 using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 data and projects trends to 2036. Metrics include prevalence, deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and age-standardized rates (ASRs) across regions, sexes, age groups, and Socio-demographic Index (SDI) levels. Key findings reveal persistent disparities: ma

A scoping review of geriatric emergency medicine research transparency in diversity, equity, and inclusion reporting.

INTRODUCTION: The intersection of ageism and racism is underexplored in geriatric emergency medicine (GEM) research. METHODS: We performed a scoping review of research published between January 2016 and December 2021. We included original emergency department-based research focused on falls, delirium/dementia, medication safety, and elder abuse. We excluded manuscripts that did not include (1) original research data pertaining to the four core topics, (2) older adults, (3) subjects from the United States, and (4) for which full text publication could not be obtained. The primary objective was

Blood Pressure Control in a Diverse Population of Hypertensive Patients With Heart Failure.

Hypertensive patients with heart failure (HF), with reduced or preserved ejection fraction, belong to a vulnerable subset with high mortality risks. In HF patients, the current clinical guideline recommends attaining a systolic blood pressure (BP) <130 mm Hg. However, levels of BP control and their correlates in this subgroup are not well understood. Our study aimed at establishing levels of BP control and its associated factors in a geographically, racially diverse population of hypertensive patients with HF. Our study involved 10,802 patients within a large health system in the Charlotte met

Community- and data-driven homelessness prevention and service delivery: optimizing for equity.

OBJECTIVE: The study tests a community- and data-driven approach to homelessness prevention. Federal policies call for efficient and equitable local responses to homelessness. However, the overwhelming demand for limited homeless assistance is challenging without empirically supported decision-making tools and raises questions of whom to serve with scarce resources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: System-wide administrative records capture the delivery of an array of homeless services (prevention, shelter, short-term housing, supportive housing) and whether households reenter the system within 2 years

The longevity dividend: A systems-thinking framework for harnessing the silver economy in low- and middle-income countries.

Population ageing is accelerating in low- and middle-income countries, where accumulated life-course inequalities, labour informality, and limited social protection shape conditions in later life. Conventional policy narratives have framed older adults as fiscal burdens, overlooking the productive and social value embedded in extended healthy life years and the structural determinants that constrain participation. This narrative review introduces the 'longevity dividend', a systems-thinking conceptual framework that positions functional ability across the life course as the central objective o

Algorithmic fairness reporting in artificial intelligence for spinal deformity: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly studied for diagnosis, surgical planning, risk stratification, and outcome prediction in spinal deformity. However, these models may reproduce inequities when datasets, outcome definitions, or validation strategies incompletely represent diverse populations. Given the rapid growth of AI in spinal deformity, there is a need to evaluate how algorithmic fairness is reported and assessed. METHODS: A systematic review was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web of Scie
