Biotic and Abiotic Signatures in Sulfate- and Carbonate-Rich Hypersaline Lakes as Analogs for Mars.

Lacustrine sulfate- and carbonate-rich deposits have been detected at Jezero and Gale craters on Mars. The preservation of potential biosignatures in these sites may depend on the nature of precipitated salts and the early diagenetic history of in situ minerals. In this study, we explore a collection of Mars analog hypersaline depositional environments in British Columbia. Magnesium salts and other sulfate and carbonate salts precipitate from the variable water chemistry of Atlin Playa and a suite of lakes on the Cariboo Plateau. Authigenic and detrital grains were distinguished on the basis o

Emergent macrophytes specifically regulate ammonia-oxidizing microbial communities and functions: comammox dominance and N2O emission effects.

AIMS: Emergent macrophytes regulate nitrogen-cycling microbial processes in lake riparian zones, though the mechanisms underlying these species-specific effects remain to be fully elucidated. This study investigated the structure, functional activity, and environmental drivers of three ammonia-oxidizing microbial communities in sediments with different emergent macrophytes (Phragmites australis, Typha orientalis, and Thalia dealbata) in Meixi Lake, Changsha. METHODS AND RESULTS: Metagenomic sequencing, quantitative PCR (qPCR), potential nitrification rate, and N2O yield were integrated to rev

Multifaceted assessment of the content of potentially toxic elements and microplastics in the sargassum habitats of Caribbean beaches, Mexico.

The present study aimed to evaluate potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, S, Se, Sr, Tl, Zn) in sargassum habitats at two distinct sites: Puerto Morelos (PM) and Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (SK) along the Mexican Caribbean coast. Median dissolved concentrations of S (1937.8 mg/L), Mg (1172.5 mg/L), and Ca (408.7 mg/L) were relatively higher than those of other elements studied. Similarly, elemental concentrations in sediment followed an order of Ca > Mg > Sr > S > Fe > Al > B > Ba > Mn > Cr > Se > Cu > As > Zn > Pb > Tl > Li > Ni > C

Molecular insights into the coupled transformation of dissolved organic matter and arsenic in lake sediment driven by algal input under redox fluctuations.

Algal organic matter (AOM) released during algal degradation promotes the mobilization of arsenic (As) from lake sediments into the overlying water. This process has been well studied under static anaerobic or aerobic conditions. However, owing to the complexity of AOM, the molecular mechanisms driving its dynamic changes and their impact on the coupled transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and As in sediments remain poorly understood under redox fluctuations. To address this gap, we investigated the effects of AOM input on As mobility and speciation by characterizing sediment DOM v

Novel Insights into Driving Forces of Carbon Burial, Nutrient Heterogeneity, and Pollutant Release Pathways in Urban Lake Sediments.

Characterizing the variation of pollutants in lake sediment and clarifying their release into overlying water are essential for remediating contaminated sediment. In this study, the total carbon in urban lake sediments significantly decreased with increasing depth, indicating a gradual reduction in carbon burial capacity. Initially, carbon and nitrogen were sequestered by the lake sediments, but they gradually diffused into the water or escaped into the atmosphere over time. The C/N ratios and carbon isotope ratios indicated a shift from algae to C4 or crassulacean acid metabolism plants as th

Contrast antibiotic activities from muddy and sandy coasts and their potential controls.

Muddy and sandy coastlines account for approximately 45% of the world's ice-free coastlines, facing significant ecological risks from antibiotic pollution due to overuse. This study elucidates how fundamental differences in sediment composition govern the distinct transport and fate of antibiotics in these contrasting coastal systems. Muddy coasts primarily consisted of fine-grained sediments with higher water contents, whereas sandy coasts are characterized by coarse-grained sand and gravel with better water permeability. Porewater acts as a bridge between overlying water and sediment, playin

Distribution and enrichment of heavy metal in the north of Wharton Basin, Indian Ocean.

Currently, there is no research focusing on heavy metals in deep-sea sediments from the northern part of the Walton Sea Basin in the Indian Ocean. Due to its unique geographical location, this area is ecologically significant to the Western Pacific-Indian Ocean system. Therefore, this study collected nine surface sediment samples from the Christmas Island Seamount Province using the Jiaolong human occupied vehicle (HOV) to investigate and elucidate the spatial distribution, enrichment characteristics, and ecological risks of heavy metals. By testing the concentrations of nine heavy metals (Hg,

Agricultural intensification as a geochemical engine: Reshaping spatiotemporal patterns of sediment toxic metal accumulation in a eutrophic plateau lake, Southwest China.

Agricultural intensification accelerates soil erosion and eutrophication, yet its role in regulating toxic metal accumulation and chemical speciation in lake sediments remains poorly understood. This study deciphers the linkages between the spatiotemporal trajectories of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in Qilu Lake, a eutrophic plateau lake in southwest China, by analyzing six sediment cores and fourteen surface sediments. Results indicate a clear metal regime shift since the 1980s, characterized by decreasing total metal concentrations. This trend was attributed to sediment coarsening, primaril

Overview of ecological risk assessment of heavy metals with the approach of land uses affecting soil pollution.

Soil contamination with toxic elements is a major environmental concern. This study has attempted to provide an overall assessment of heavy metal (HM) pollution status in Iran's soil, particularly due to a lack of information on determining contamination levels across different land uses (LUs). A systematic review was utilized to extract manuscripts in which anthropogenic activities affect the HM level in soil. 195 papers were selected by March 2025. 10 HMs (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) within 9 LUs (industrial areas, mining areas, landfill areas, river sediments, roadside, agri

Enrichment and risk assessment of molybdenum (Mo) in the rock-soil-maize continuum of a black shale area.

Soils overlying black shale commonly exhibit high molybdenum (Mo) background levels, yet Mo transfer along the rock-soil-plant continuum and its ecological implications remain unclear. This study systematically investigated Mo concentrations and associated risks in rock, soil, and maize samples from a black shale area in southwestern China. The results demonstrate that weathering of Lower Cambrian black shales (Mo: 6.14-52.59 mg/kg) results in Mo enrichment in the overlying soils (0.96-50.04 mg/kg). Along the weathering profile, Mo concentration generally increases from fresh rock to weathered

Paired water-sediment DOM optical fingerprints reveal sediment-side signals of apparent potentially toxic element partitioning in coal-mining subsidence lakes.

Coal-mining subsidence lakes contain active sediment-water interfaces, where surface sediments can influence the apparent partitioning and potential secondary mobilization of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Dissolved organic matter (DOM) influences metal speciation and transport, but sediment-side organic-matter signals remain underrepresented in monitoring based on overlying-water chemistry or bulk sediment inventories. Here, we evaluated a paired water-sediment DOM optical screening approach integrating ultraviolet-visible absorbance, fluorescence indices, EEM-PARAFAC components, sediment

Monitoring bioremediation of an impacted coastal lagoon through nature-based solutions: a case study of the Maricá Lagoon (RJ, Brazil).

This study evaluates bioremediation using effective microorganisms (EM) to improve quality in the eutrophic Maricá Lagoon (RJ, Brazil). The intervention, implemented in late 2021, consisted of the regular application of EM in one of the lagoon's main fluvial contributors: the Mumbuca-Ubatiba drainage basin. To evaluate bioremediation, physicochemical and biogeochemical variables were monitored in the water column and sediments from 2020 to 2023. Whereas the drainage basin was sampled monthly, the lagoon was sampled every 3 months. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations showed strong

Sediment composition influences microplastic trapping in seagrass meadows.

Seagrass meadows are highly-valued coastal ecosystems that have the potential to act as sinks for microplastic pollution through their particle-trapping capabilities. Using wave tank simulations, this study tested how microplastic capture can be affected by particle size, sediment composition, and the presence of seagrass (cores collected from two Zostera muelleri meadows). Two synthetic crumb rubber polymers of differing densities were chosen as model contaminants due to their widespread use in road and sporting infrastructure. Sediment composition and seagrass presence influenced microplasti

Effect of cyanobacterial bloom proliferation on antibiotic resistance genes in the sediments of a eutrophic lake.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) represent an emerging pollutant of increasing concern. In this study, we analyzed the composition and spatiotemporal variation of ARGs in the sediments of eutrophic Chaohu Lake, China, using a metagenomic method. A total of 22 ARGs and 199 ARGs subtypes were detected, with the most prevalent subtypes being multidrug (57.720 %) and rifamycin (21.781 %). A higher abundance of ARGs in Chaohu Lake was observed (p < 0.05) during winter and spring owing to multiple factors, including variations in seasonal inputs and hydraulic conditions, occurrence of cyanobacteri

Coastal vulnerability to extreme weather events: An integrated analysis of erosion, sediment movement, and land subsidence based on multi-temporal optical and SAR satellite data.

Coastal areas undergo continuous transformations, altering their geometry under the influence of external forces like tides, waves, and extreme events. Thus, monitoring the impact of extreme weather events on coastal regions is crucial to prevent potential cascading hazards. Here, we utilized time-series optical and SAR satellite data and tide records, coupled with sophisticated analytical techniques, to analyze erosion processes, sediment transport, and vertical land movement (VLM) at an embayed sandy beach (i.e., Haeundae Beach, South Korea). We found a significant erosion rate of -4.12 m/ye

Multiscale spatio-temporal variability of suspended sediment front in the Yangtze River Estuary and its ecological effects.

The suspended sediment front (SSF) in the Yangtze River Estuary significantly affects regional circulation, water quality, and productivity. However, the quantitative understanding of its multiscale spatio-temporal variations and associated ecological effects remains largely limited. Utilizing suspended sediment concentration remote sensing data from 2012 to 2018, we applied an improved gradient-based front detection algorithm to identify SSFs. Our analysis highlighted significant variability in the SSF and established its oscillating boundaries. The mean longitude location of the front is app

Historical and seasonal patterns of Hg accumulation: A comparative study of 210Pb-dated sediment cores and sediment trap records in a large coastal lagoon, southern Gulf of Mexico.

Sedimentary processes, ecological risks, and historical trends of mercury (Hg) contamination were assessed through 210Pb-dated sediment cores and sediment traps (period 2017-2019) in Términos Lagoon (TL), a critical coastal ecosystem in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Hg natural background levels in TL cores widely varied (7-153 ng g-1), and Hg concentrations were higher in the cores (median 32 ng g-1, range 6-4240 ng g-1) than in the sediment traps (median 54 ng g-1, range 44-1311 ng g-1). In most cores, enrichment factors ranged from null to moderate, except for very severe levels found in core

A global assessment of microplastic abundance and characteristics on marine turtle nesting beaches.

Sandy coastal beaches are an important nesting habitat for marine turtles and a known sink for plastic pollution. Existing methodologies for monitoring the spatiotemporal patterns of abundance and composition of plastic are, however, disparate. We engaged a global network of marine turtle scientists to implement a large-scale sampling effort to assess microplastic abundance in beach sediments on marine turtle nesting beaches. Sand samples were collected from 209 sites spanning six oceans, microplastics (1-5 mm) were extracted through stacked sieves, visually identified, and a sub-sample verifi

Cascading tipping points of mercury dynamics in coastal sediments: Anthropogenic-enhanced deposition vs. warming-driven remobilization.

Coastal sediments in rapidly urbanizing semi-enclosed bays act as critical yet vulnerable mercury (Hg) reservoirs, where converging anthropogenic and climatic pressures are pushing the Hg held within towards a critical tipping point, consequently threatening public and ecosystem health. This study deciphers the two-decadal sediment Hg dynamics in Jiaozhou Bay (JZB, Yellow Sea) through field sampling and historical data analysis (2002-2021), revealing that surficial sediment Hg in eastern nearshore hotspots decreased significantly between 2002 and 2018 (p < 0.05), followed by a rebound at a rat
