The structure and function of a newly created interdisciplinary Geriatric Consultation Team (GCT) are described. The GCT was introduced on a … cent) over 10.5 months of follow up. It was concluded that a GCT in an acute-care hospital promotes geriatrics, teaches interdisciplinary teamwork, improves awareness of functional problems of patients, and increases use of rehabilitative services, but does not decrease the high rate of readmission of hospitalized geriatric patients.

In a five year period, 62 patients aged 70 to 91 years underwent operative inguinal hernial repair. Other significant ailments were present in 46 of the 51 men and six of the 11 women. Postoperatively, complications occurred in 16 patients, four of whom died. The functioning of a hospital for chronic diseases was examined in terms of the type of patient referred, the course in the hospital and the eventual outcome, in a prospective study of a year's admissions to one department of Harzfeld Hospital in Israel. We have used Southern blot analysis to type individuals for the presence or absence of a rare EcoRI RFLP at the c-mos proto-oncogene locus. This polymorphism has previously been reported to be associated with cancer. Ninety-eight patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and 154 cancer-free individuals, including 108 geriatric patients with no family history of cancer, were studied.
