[Releasing phenomenon of well learned praxis with right hand].

We report a case with "releasing phenomenon of well learned praxis" with right hand caused by cerebral infarction in the territory of left a … scribed by the examiner without visually presenting them. The right hand also tended to imitate the gestures of the examiner automatically, even if the patient was not asked for imitating the gestures. These behavioral abnormalities of the right hand was thought to be liberated from the inhibition system.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

100 years after Liepmann-Lesion correlates of diminished selection and application of familiar versus novel tools.

100 years ago, Liepmann highlighted the role of left ventro-dorsal lesions for impairments in conceptual (rather ventral) and motor (more do … c knowledge (BOSU), visuo-spatial working memory (Corsi Block Tapping) and meaningless imitation of gestures (IML). Impaired tool use was most pronounced after LBD. Our VLSM results in the LBD group suggested that selection- versus application-related aspects of praxis and semantics of familiar versus novel tool use can be behaviorally and neuro-anatomical …

Apraxia, pantomime and the parietal cortex.

Apraxia, a disorder of higher motor cognition, is a frequent and outcome-relevant sequel of left hemispheric stroke. Deficient pantomiming of object use constitutes a key symptom of apraxia and is assessed when testing for apraxia. To date the neural basis of pantomime remains controversial. We here review the literature and perform a meta-analysis of the relevant structural and functional imaging (fMRI/PET) studies. Based on a systematic literature search, 10 structural and 12 functional imaging studies were selected. Structural lesion studies associated pantomiming deficits with left frontal

Cognitive constraints on constituent order: evidence from elicited pantomime.

To what extent does human cognition influence the structure of human language? Recent experiments using elicited pantomime suggest that the prevalence of Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) order across the world's languages may arise in part because SOV order is most compatible with how we conceptually represent transitive events (Goldin-Meadow, So, Özyürek, & Mylander, 2008). However, this raises the question as to why non-SOV orders exist. Two recent studies (Meir, Lifshitz, Ilkbasaran, & Padden, 2010; Gibson et al., 2013) suggest that SOV might be suboptimal for describing events in which both the a

Diagnosis and treatment of upper limb apraxia.

Upper limb apraxia, a disorder of higher motor cognition, is a common consequence of left-hemispheric stroke. Contrary to common assumption, apraxic deficits not only manifest themselves during clinical testing but also have delirious effects on the patients' everyday life and rehabilitation. Thus, a reliable diagnosis and efficient treatment of upper limb apraxia is important to improve the patients' prognosis after stroke. Nevertheless, to date, upper limb apraxia is still an underdiagnosed and ill-treated entity. Based on a systematic literature search, this review summarizes the current to

"Digit anatomy": a new technique for learning anatomy using motor memory.

Gestural motions of the hands and fingers are powerful tools for expressing meanings and concepts, and the nervous system has the capacity to retain multiple long-term motor memories, especially including movements of the hands. We developed many sets of successive movements of both hands, referred to as "digit anatomy," and made students practice the movements which express (1) the aortic arch, subclavian, and thoracoacromial arteries and their branches, (2) the celiac trunk, superior mesenteric artery and their branches, and formation of the portal vein, (3) the heart and the coronary arteri

Building social equity and person-centred innovation into the end TB response.

Reducing systemic inequities in testing, access to care, social protection - and in the scientific process - is essential to end TB. Incorporating social science methods and expertise on inequity into the mainstream TB response would help ensure that political commitments to equity move beyond symbolic gestures. We convened a meeting between TB social scientists, people with lived experience, civil society and community members to discuss equity within the global TB response. Here, we propose five means by which a social science lens can strengthen equitable, person-centred responses and recon…

[The art of being when there is nothing you can do: caring for perinatal bereavement].

The period of mourning after perinatal loss is not synonym for depression. The article illustrates a way of caring for bereaved parents, which takes into account the temporality and individual nature of the bereavement process. The use of rituals and symbolic gestures allows for calling into existence the loss of a human being, who is gone without leaving many reminders. Psychotherapeutic care by the liaison-psychiatric service is part of the multidisciplinary care program proposed by the maternity of the University Hospitals of Geneva. These encounters offer parents the possibility to continu…

Oneiric stupor: the peculiar behaviour of agrypnia excitata.

Agrypnia excitata (AE) is a syndrome characterized by the inability to sleep associated with a generalized motor and autonomic over-activation. AE is caused by a thalamo-limbic system dysfunction and comprises three different conditions: Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI), Delirium Tremens (DT), and Morvan Syndrome (MS). Oneiric Stupor episodes (OS) are the peculiar motor behaviour of AE. During OS patients perform simple automatic gestures mimicking daily-life activities. This paper is the first description of the different characteristics of OS in two patients with MS and another with FFI, emphas…

Intracholecystic papillary neoplasm: potential differential diagnosis before a gallbladder polyp.

Intracholecystic papillary neoplasia (IPN) is a rare entity rarely described in the literature, of incidental anatomopathological diagnosis in a cholecystectomy specimen that presents a premalignant behavior, with progression to carcinoma in more than 50% of cases. In the absence of an invasive component, clinical follow-up is recommended, without associating another surgical gesture, with a 5-year prognosis (90% survival). We present a case of a patient with an incidental diagnosis of NPIC after laparoscopic cholecystectomy due to presenting a gallbladder polyp.

Nefazadone-induced acute dystonic reaction.

A 53-y-o patient presented approximately 2 h after taking her first dose of nefazadone. Chief complaint was lip smacking with hand and arm gesturing. The patient also took 25 mg meclizine which she had used before with no adverse effects. Diphenhydramine followed by benztropine led to resolution of symptoms within 1 h. Patient subsequently used meclizine with no untoward reactions. Nefazadone should be added to the list of agents that cause acute dystonic reactions.

[Motoricity in the aging human (author's transl)].

Every period of human life is accompanied by its own motoricity. Apart from spastic, extrapyramidal and cerebellar disturbances resulting from various types of diseases of middle and old age, the individual associated movements in miming and gesture become unharmonious and stiffer with increasing age and the hyperkinesia which was hidden by combined motoricity becomes more marked. Occasionally even a pronounced decline of motor efficiency occurs with apraxia, abasia and astasia. Then the psychic performance is usually similarly altered at the same time.

SlideRing: Robust Dual-IMU Thumb-to-Finger Text Input for Virtual Reality.

Text entry remains a bottleneck for productivity-oriented Virtual Reality (VR), especially in scenarios where optical hand tracking is unstable because of self-occlusion, poor lighting, or out-of-view interaction. We present SlideRing, a dual-thumb wearable text-entry method that senses thumb-to-finger micro-gestures with two miniature Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs). SlideRing defines a 30-command interaction space from two hands, three target fingers, and five gesture types, then maps these commands to a full alphabetic keyboard through two complementary strategies: an ergonomic layout opt…

NewRep: a classification model for online pattern recognition based on HD-EMG signals.

High density (HD) electromyography (EMG) signals have been widely used for pattern recognition (PR) in myoelectric control, particularly for gesture recognition. Although neural networks generally outperform traditional machine learning models in EMG PR, the limited accuracy in recognition remains a critical challenge. To further improve the online classification of neural networks in EMG PR, this study establishes a new neural network named NewRep by introducing the self-attention mechanism module into the existing RepViT, a lightweight convolutional neural network inspired by vision transfor

Tracking of Wrist and Hand Kinematics With Ultra Low Power Wearable A-Mode Ultrasound.

Ultrasound-based Hand Gesture Recognition has gained significant attention in recent years. While static gesture recognition has been extensively explored, only a few works have tackled the task of movement regression for real-time tracking, despite its importance for the development of natural and smooth interaction strategies. In this paper, we demonstrate the regression of 3 hand-wrist Degrees of Freedom (DoFs) using a lightweight, A-mode-based, truly wearable US armband featuring four transducers and WULPUS, an ultra-low-power acquisition device. We collect US data, synchronized with an op

Effects of Training and Calibration Data on Surface Electromyogram-Based Recognition for Upper Limb Amputees.

Surface electromyogram (sEMG)-based gesture recognition has emerged as a promising avenue for developing intelligent prostheses for upper limb amputees. However, the temporal variations in sEMG have rendered recognition models less efficient than anticipated. By using cross-session calibration and increasing the amount of training data, it is possible to reduce these variations. The impact of varying the amount of calibration and training data on gesture recognition performance for amputees is still unknown. To assess these effects, we present four datasets for the evaluation of calibration da
