Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), optical absorption, and FT-IR spectra of vanadyl ions in the sodium-lead borophosphate (Na(2)O-PbO-B(2)O(3)-P(2)O(5)) (SLBP) glass system have been studied. EPR spectra of all the glass samples exhibit resonance signals characteristic of VO(2+) ions. The spin Hamiltonian parameters g and A are found to be independent of the V(2)O(5) content and temperature. PURPOSE: To report the long term results of bifocal treatment in nonrefractive accommodative esotropia and to analyze the changes of accommodative convergence to accommodation (AC/A) ratio.
METHODS: Sixteen patients treated with bifocal glasses for at least 5 years were evaluated retrospectively. Angle of deviation at near and distance, refractive error, and AC/A ratio by the lens gradient method were analyzed. We report on a 12-year-old boy in whom a glass fragment migrated into the lumbar spinal canal causing low back pain and radiculopathy 6 years after injury. Computed tomography showed a foreign body in the anterior spinal canal of L5/S1. The patient underwent recapping T-saw laminoplasty to remove the foreign body. The authors evaluated the short-term results of stabilization operations of the lumbar spine by means of a glass-ceramics replacement of the intervertebral disc in a group of 25 patients. Indication for operation was monosegmental instability or spondylolisthesis grade I in the lumbar spine with progressing clinical symptoms. Amorphous glass scintillators are designed, and the radio-luminescence and density are modulated by GdF3 concentration. The glass density is enhanced to 4.62 g/cm3, which is higher than oxyfluoride glass ceramics, and increases the absorption coefficient for X-rays.
