Interactions between Global Health Initiatives and country health systems: the case of a neglected tropical diseases control program in Mali.

BACKGROUND: Recently, a number of Global Health Initiatives (GHI) have been created to address single disease issues in low-income countries, such as poliomyelitis, trachoma, neonatal tetanus, etc.. Empirical evidence on the effects of such GHIs on local health systems remains scarce. This paper explores positive and negative effects of the Integrated Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) Control Initiative, consisting in mass preventive chemotherapy for five targeted NTDs, on Mali's health system where it was first implemented in 2007. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Campaign processes and interactions wit…

Are global health commitments relevant in low-income countries? Considering discussions at Davos 2026.

At the 2026 World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, health was positioned as central to economic resilience, productivity, and geopolitical stability. Four themes dominated the global health agenda: artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled health systems, investible health system resilience, women's health as an economic investment opportunity, and mental health as a macroeconomic priority. While these agendas reflect important global concerns, they are being advanced during a period characterised by shrinking development assistance, fiscal stress, debt pressures, and uneven institutio…

Linking climate change, global mental health and structural interventions: opportunities for research and action.

Climate change disproportionately affects people with pre-existing mental illness, yet there is a critical shortage of targeted interventions serving their needs. This Commentary argues for the further development and evaluation of preventative, structural interventions, including cash transfers, in the context of climate-change related disasters to reduce vulnerability among people with mental illness.

Tracing the Global Trade Trails of Coal-Related CO2 Emissions and Environmental Health Burdens.

Coal combustion contributes greatly to the level of CO2 emissions, air pollution, and health burdens. International trade classifies coal extraction, coal combustion, and the consumption of goods and services separately. A lack of comprehensive analyses of trade-embodied CO2 emissions and health damages limits our understanding of the regional responsibilities of these impacts across the chain of coal supply and use. Here we developed an integrated framework combining global coal trade matrices, a multiregional input-output model, GEOS-Chem simulations, and exposure-response modeling to trace

Zoonotic bacterial pathogens in global fish production: transmission, resistance, and one health control strategies.

BACKGROUND: Fish and fishery products are central to global food security, providing high-quality protein and essential micronutrients to populations worldwide. The intensification of aquaculture, expansion of international seafood trade, and growing consumer preference for minimally processed fish products have increased human exposure to bacterial pathogens at multiple points along the production-to-consumption chain. AIM AND METHODS: This review evaluates bacterial hazards in fish and fish products using recent epidemiological surveillance, field investigations, and systematic reviews. Lit

Shifting priorities: U.S. health policy and the fragile future of global HIV/AIDS efforts.

ObjectiveThis narrative review examines the impact of the United States on the war against HIV/AIDS and thus the impact of political ideologies on the financing of the medical sector.DiscussionInitially marked by stigma, particularly in the early years of the epidemic, the US response was transformed with the launch of the Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in 2003. PEPFAR has partnered with entities such as the Global Fund and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), retranslating global health governance. Despite this success, the global response remains dep…

Influenza Virus: Global Health Impact, Strategies, Challenges, Role of Nanotechnolgy in Influenza Vaccine Development.

Influenza is a serious and global health issue, and it is a major cause of morbidity, fatality, and economic loss every year. Seasonal vaccines exist but are not very effective due to strain mismatches, delays in production, and antigenic drift. This comprehensive overview discusses the current situation of influenza vaccination, including the numerous types of vaccines-inactivated, live attenuated, and recombinant vaccines-and their effectiveness, efficacy, and associated challenges. It highlights the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the trends of influenza vaccination and the level to whi…

Global health burden and inequality patterns of occupational noise exposure from 1990 to 2019.

Exposure to occupational noise has emerged as a major health issue worldwide. To better evaluate changes in the health impacts of occupational noise exposure from 1990 to 2021, this study conducted stratified analyses of spatiotemporal variations across regions, genders, age, and sociodemographic index (SDI) levels. Results indicate that low-income and rapidly industrializing countries bear higher burdens of occupational noise-related diseases. Males and middle-aged to elderly populations are the primary high-risk groups for occupational noise exposure, with a particularly notable increase in

America First cuts are the deepest: global health aid reductions and African palliative care.

In January 2025, President Trump immediately paused US foreign development assistance, upending healthcare in many low- and middle-income countries. The scale of the lost funding is substantial. The US administration terminated 86 per cent of USAID programmes worth $75.9 billion. The impact of these reductions on African health systems and governments will be considerable. With limited resources to cover financial shortfalls, already neglected African palliative care organisations will be further deprioritised, subsumed under more cost-effective disease prevention and treatment programmes. Global Assessment of Health Utilities Associated with Pneumococcal Disease in Adults: Targeted Literature Reviews.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal disease can significantly reduce quality of life (QoL). Health utilities are commonly used to assess QoL burden and calculate quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), which are critical inputs in cost-utility analyses (CUAs) to evaluate the economic value of pneumococcal vaccines. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to synthesize utility values used in CUAs of pneumococcal vaccines in adult populations in North America and Europe and to summarize global utility studies on pneumococcal disease and post-meningitis sequelae (PMS) in adults. METHODS: Two targeted literature reviews
