Electrochemical sensors for detecting bioactive constituents and contaminants in traditional Chinese medicines: research progress and critical perspectives.

Traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) require analytical methods that can handle chemically complex matrices while addressing both efficacy-o … nsing with a 6.2 nM detection limit in herbal materials. Representative contaminant studies include glyphosate monitoring in TCM samples with an 8.8 × 10-10 M detection limit and 94.47-112.23% recoveries, Hg2+ sensing in Sanqi with an electrochemiluminescence detection limit of 0.27 pM, and ochratoxin A detection in medicinal-edible malt with a detection lim …

Health risks of pesticide use and agricultural products contamination in the Plateaux region of Togo, West Africa.

This study assesses pesticide in crops from Togo, West Africa's Plateaux region and evaluates health risks associated with farmers' exposure … s. The survey established the profile of pesticides in use. The herbicide spectrum was dominated by glyphosate, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, nicosulfuron, paraquat, and propanil. For insect control, applications primarily relied on λ-cyhalothrin, cypermethrin, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, and chlorpyrifos. Notably, 83% of operators reported not using person …

Pesticide exposure risks and seasonal variation in honey bee-collected pollen across agricultural landscapes in Latvia.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are widely used as bioindicators of environmental contamination and bee-collected pollen reflects pesticide expo … rbicides (38% and 24%) and insecticides (11% and 22%). The highest concentrations were recorded for glyphosate, fluazifop-P-butyl, boscalid, azoxystrobin, acetamiprid, and tebuconazole. Seasonal variation was evident, with higher residue concentrations and PHQ values mainly from mid-May to early July, coinciding with crop flowering and pesticide application …

Unraveling the Carcinogenic Mechanisms of Food Contaminants: An Integrated in Silico Framework Combining Network Toxicology, Machine Learning, and Molecular Docking.

Food contamination poses a significant global health threat with carcinogenic potential, though the molecular pathways connecting contaminants to cancer remain poorly understood. This study sought to identify key molecular targets mediating the carcinogenic effects of nine prevalent dietary contaminants: glyphosate, perfluorooctane sulfonate, nitrosamines, pentabromodiphenyl ethers, methylmercury, dioxins, acrylamide, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and aflatoxin. Using multiple online databases, we identified target genes associated with these contaminants and pan-cancer, then conducted protein-prot…

Taxonomic and functional fingerprints in the gut microbiota of Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) inhabiting organic and conventional farming fields.

Intensive farming leading to both landscape homogenization and massive use of pesticides is threatening biodiversity associated with agricultural landscapes. Pesticides may alter the composition of the gut microbiota, which contributes critically to a variety of host metabolic and immune functions, and the consequences on wildlife health are still unknown. We studied potential effects of farming practices on the gut microbiota of wild Iberian hare populations (Lepus granatensis) inhabiting conventional (synthetic pesticide-treated, mostly glyphosate) and organic (synthetic pesticide-free) farm…

The oxidative damage and inflammation caused by pesticides are reverted by lipoic acid in rat brain.

We have previously demonstrated that the administration of low doses of dimethoate, glyphosate and zineb to rats (i.p. 1/250 LD50, three times a week for 5weeks) provokes severe oxidative stress (OS) in specific brain regions: substantia nigra, cortex and hippocampus. These effects were also observed in plasma. Lipoic acid (LA) is considered an "ideal antioxidant" due to its ability to scavenge reactive species, reset antioxidant levels and cross the blood-brain barrier. To investigate its protective effect we administered LA (i.p. 25, 50 and 100mg/kg) simultaneously with the pesticide mixture…

Assessment of oxidative stress in Rhamdia quelen exposed to agrichemicals.

Due to the proximity of crop and fish culture areas, some agrichemicals that could be harmful for fish could enter into fishponds by different ways, such as by leaching through rain. Rhamdia quelen (Teleostei) were exposed to sublethal concentrations of methyl parathion (MP), a glyphosate based herbicide (Gly), and tebuconazole (Teb). The liver of R. quelen exposed to MP and Teb showed enhanced levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), higher than in the control fish (56% and 59%, respectively). In contrast, Gly did not alter the TBARS generation. The protein carbonyl content …

Rapid and sensitive determination of phosphorus-containing amino acid herbicides in soil samples by capillary zone electrophoresis with diode laser-induced fluorescence detection.

A straightforward and sensitive method has been developed for the analysis of phosphorus-containing amino acid herbicides (glufosinate and aminomethylphosphonic acid, the major metabolite of glyphosate) in soil samples. For this purpose, the analytical features of two indocyanine fluorescent dyes, sulfoindocyanine succinimidyl ester (Cy5) and 1-ethyl-1-[5-(N-succinimidyl-oxycarbonyl)pentyl]-3,3,3,3-tetramethyl-indodicarbocyanine chloride, as labeling reagents for the determination of these herbicides by CZE with diode LIF detection were investigated. Practical aspects related to the labeling c…

Dietary exposure to five highly polar pesticides of the Hong Kong population through a total diet study.

Dietary exposure assessment of the Hong Kong adult and younger populations to five highly polar pesticides, namely ethephon, fosetyl aluminium, glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium and maleic hydrazide, was included in the second Hong Kong Total Diet Study (TDS). A total of 187 commonly consumed food items were collected and prepared "as consumed". A total of 374 composite food samples were analysed for these five highly polar pesticides by modified Quick Polar Pesticides (QuPPe) method combined with LC-MS/MS. Related dietary exposure was estimated based on the analytical results and the food cons…

Investigating the Shared Mechanisms of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals in Urogenital Tumors.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are important environmental risk factors for urogenital malignancies, but the shared molecular mechanisms underlying their carcinogenic effects remain poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigated the common pro-tumorigenic mechanisms of 12 prevalent EDCs, including anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), bisphenol A, clofenotane, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, diazinon, dibutyl phthalate, glyphosate, malathion, perfluorooctanoic acid, polychlorinated biphenyls, and triclosan, across four urogenital cancers, including bladder cancer (BLCA), renal cell car…

Physiological disruption, genotoxicity, and body condition impairment in Caiman latirostris yearlings exposed to environmentally relevant pesticide concentrations.

Wild populations of Caiman latirostris in South America are potentially exposed to complex mixtures of pesticides used in agricultural practices. These contaminants can disrupt physiological processes, including reproductive success and breeding performance. This study evaluated the effects of 60-day sub-chronic exposure in caiman yearlings to four commercial pesticide formulations: glyphosate (GLY; 2%), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D; 0.12%), imidacloprid (IMI; 0.2%), chlorantraniliprole (CAP; 0.03%), and mixtures: M1 (GLY 1% + 2,4-D 0.06%), M2 (IMI 0.1% + CAP 0.015%), and M3 (M1 + M2)…
