Microbiological quality assessment of potential pathogenic bacteria and multidrug resistance patterns in commercial electrolyte drinks in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Local electrolyte drinks in Bangladesh are produced without approval from the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI). Hence, this study aimed to identify foodborne bacteria from electrolyte drinks and their antimicrobial resistance profiles to assess microbiological safety. A total of 40 electrolyte drink samples, representing 9 local brands in Dhaka, were evaluated for microbiological quality. Bacteria were present in all samples. Around 40% of the samples exceeded the aerobic plate count limit established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Additionally, 55% of the sample

[Mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance].

Most fundamental differences in the bacterial structure between the gram positive and negative bacteria are whether the organism has the outer membrane. The most essential mechanism of antimicrobial resistance in the gram negative bacteria are the alteration of membrane permeability to antibiotics. The outer membrane can perform as the barrier to prevent the cells from being exposed to antibiotics. On the other hand, the gram positive bacteria need to alternate the antimicrobial targets for reducing their binding affinity with antibiotics, because of defect of the outer membrane. On the basis

Characterizing the Antimicrobial Properties of 405 nm Light and the Corning® Light-Diffusing Fiber Delivery System.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and multidrug resistant bacteria pose a significant threat to the U.S. healthcare system. With a dearth of new antibiotic approvals, novel antimicrobial strategies are required to help solve this problem. Violet-blue visible light (400-470 nm) has been shown to elicit strong antimicrobial effects toward many pathogens, including representatives of the ESKAPE bacterial pathogens, which have a high propensity to cause HAIs. However, phototherapeutic solutions to prevention or treating infections are currently limited by efficient and

Pathogens Responsible for Early-Onset Sepsis in Suzhou, China.

Early-onset sepsis (EOS) in neonates is a serious disease with severe complications. The increased severity of EOS and risk of death in newborns in recent years signify that continued monitoring to detect possible changes in the pathogen etiology, disease severity, and disease outcome is particularly important. We conducted a retrospective study on early-onset infection among infants (birth weights > 800 g) who were hospitalized in the Children's Hospital of Soochow University from January 1, 2011, to December 31, 2017. Multivariable analysis was performed to determine the significant predicto

Tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) CD59: A complement inhibitor that binds bacterial cells and promotes bacterial escape from the killing of fish serum.

CD59 is a complement regulatory protein that inhibits the formation of membrane attack complex of complement. In this study, we examined the … serum complement. ELISA and microscopy detected binding of rCsCD59 to a number of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Interaction with rCsCD59 did not affect bacterial viability but significantly enhanced bacterial resistance against the killing effect of fish serum. Together these results indicate that fish CD59 may to some degrees facilitate a general escape of …

Effect of microorganisms on etiology of hematospermia.

BACKGROUND: Hematospermia is the presence of blood in the ejaculate. Its etiology is congenital, inflammatory, infectious, obstructive, tumoral, vascular, traumatic, iatrogenic or related to systemic disease. It is a quite irritating and life-quality-disturbing condition for men. It is significant to demonstrate infectious-based hematospermia due to the fact that its treatment is easier than for other reasons. METHODS: 30 patients, having spontaneous hematospermia, were taken to our study. The serum total PSA levels of the patients were examined and microbiological examinations such as direct
