Localized thymic amyloidosis presenting with myasthenia gravis: case report.

A mediastinal mass was incidentally found on chest radiography in a 46-yr-old woman who had had myasthenia gravis (MG) for 2 months. Computed tomography revealed a 4-cm in size, well-defined, and lobulating mass with nodular calcification that was located in the thymus. Microscopically, the mass consisted of diffuse amorphous eosinophilic materials. These deposits exhibited apple-green birefringence under polarized light microscopy after Congo red staining. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that they were positive for both kappa and lambda light chains and negative for amyloid A. A diagnos

Visible-light-promoted O-glycosylation with indolylthio glycosides.

A novel method for the preparation of thioglycoside donors from d-glucose and 2-indolone was developed. This method is straightforward to operate and enables highly efficient catalysis under mild conditions. In addition, a method for O-glycosylation of thioglycosides with various alcohols using trifluoromethyl thianthrenium triflate (TT-CF3+TfO-) as an initiator and a visible light-induced photoredox catalysis method was also developed. The method is green, mild, easy to perform and does not require a neutralization step.

White-light-excited multicolour room-temperature phosphorescence: Mg2+-coordinated metal-organic amorphous composites for anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

The development of white-light-excited room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials with tunable emission remains a significant challenge for practical applications. Herein, we report a novel strategy to achieve this goal using amorphous metal-organic amorphous composites (MOACs) based on Mg2+ coordination. Mechanistic studies reveal that the MgO coordination bonds not only broaden the visible-light absorption but also suppress non-radiative decay by restricting molecular motion and blocking O2 permeation within the rigid MOACs matrix. By rationally redesigning the luminescent centers, we s

Achieving Precision Phototherapy from Start to Finish: Integrating Endosomal Escape, Respiration Inhibition, and ROS Release in a Single Upconversion Nanoparticle.

Precision phototherapy requires tight control over several therapeutic steps, which traditional methods often struggle to achieve. Here, this study reports an orthogonal trichromatic upconversion nanoparticle with a rather simple nanoarchitecture, NaErF4@NaYbF4@NaYbF4:Nd@NaYF4:Yb,Tm. Unlike conventional designs that rely on multiple activators and complicated multi-shelled structures (up to six nanoshells), the reported triple-shelled UCNPs utilize only two activator ions (Er3⁺ and Tm3⁺) but still enables to release red, green, and blue colors in response to three different NIR light excitatio

Blue light impairs cornea and corneal wound healing by downregulating VCAM1 partly.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of long-term pollution from different wavelengths of light on the corneal epithelium (CE) and identify potential biomarkers. Rabbits were exposed to red, green, blue, white, and environmental light for 6 weeks. The CE was assessed using various techniques such as fluorescein sodium staining, transcriptome sequencing, electron microscopy, and molecular assays. In human corneal epithelial cells (hCECs), the downregulation of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM1) in response to blue light (BL) pollution was observed. This downregulation of VCAM1 inh

Studies on the manganese of the chloroplast.

Manganese deficiency of green plants is known to affect preferentially the activity of the oxygen evolving system in the photosynthetic apparatus. Our studies showed that the time needed to reactivate photosynthesis in Mn-deficient algae varies with each culture, and is often very short when Mn is added not before illumination but during the light period. The recent finding by Cheniae and Martin that the reactivation requires light, is confirmed. The plain incorporation of (54)Mn into deficient algae as distinguished from reactivation was barely affected by light, yet was inhibited by uncouple

Green channel-informed collaborative filtering for high-fidelity laser speckle contrast imaging in dual-display laparoscopy.

The dual-display laparoscopic imaging system (DLIS), which integrates laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) with white-light RGB mode, enhances surgical decision-making during minimally invasive procedures. However, motion artifacts and dynamic perfusion necessitate reduced statistical frames, which increases noise and degrades imaging quality. Although the structure-guided anisotropic approach optimizes local contrast calculation, it fails to suppress global statistical noise. To address this, we propose a green (G) channel-informed collaborative filtering framework, which leverages the hemog

Photobiomodulation promotes adenoviral gene transduction in auditory cells.

Gene therapy is the delivery of a therapeutic gene into target cells to treat disorders by replacing disease-causing mutated genes with healthy ones. Gene therapy of the inner ear has been recently described, with applications for sensorineural hearing loss. However, gene delivery to the location of the inner ear, and thus efficacy of therapy, is challenging. Photobiomodulation (PBM) with a low-level laser has been suggested to have a therapeutic effect and has the potential to augment gene therapy. To investigate whether PBM improves the rate of adenovirus (Ad)-mediated viral delivery, we com

A single-chip, dual-gain color-NIR camera for fluorescence-guided lung and breast cancer surgery.

Near infrared (NIR) fluorescence guided surgery can highlight tumors and sentinel lymph nodes, but most clinical fluorescence imaging systems use multi-camera architectures in which residual color-NIR misregistration can mislocalize fluorescence relative to anatomy, and weak signals often require dimming operating room lights. We developed a single-chip dual-gain scientific CMOS (sCMOS) sensor with red, green, blue (RGB), and NIR channels that provides intrinsically coregistered color reflectance and NIR fluorescence under typical operating room illumination (50-80 kLux). A backside illuminate

(Near-Infrared) Fluorescence-Guided Surgery Under Ambient Light Conditions: A Next Step to Embedment of the Technology in Clinical Routine.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In open surgery procedures, after temporarily dimming the lights in the operation theatre, the Photo Dynamic Eye (PDE) fluorescence camera has, amongst others, been used for fluorescence-guided sentinel node (SN) biopsy procedures. To improve the clinical utility and logistics of fluorescence-guided surgery, we developed and evaluated a prototype modified PDE (m-PDE) fluorescence camera system. METHODS: The m-PDE works under ambient light conditions and includes a white light mode and a pseudo-green-colored fluorescence mode (including a gray-scaled anatomical backgrou

A Reversible 900 nm Near-Infrared Photoswitch for Invisibly Writable 2D and 3D Displays.

Molecular photoswitches interchange between different states in response to light irradiation and represent prominent tools to deliberately control changes at the smallest scales. A standing challenge for their development is pushing absorptions into the low-energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum, which is highly desirable to avoid photodamage, allows mixing of photoresponsive components, and maximizes the available color range. Here we report on a novel photoswitch motif, peri-benzo[a]fluoranthenethioindigo (PBFT), enabling direct excitation with near-infrared (NIR) light up to 900 nm wav

Chemiluminescence-Powered DASA Photoswitching Enables Tumor-Activated Drug Release.

Light-dependent drug delivery systems (LDDSs) are fundamentally constrained by limited tissue penetration of external irradiation. Here we report a chemically powered nanoplatform (CPC-nano) that eliminates the need for external light by coupling chemiluminescence (CL) with photoswitchable donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs). A DASA-PEG amphiphile was engineered to undergo hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic isomerization upon optical excitation. By coencapsulating a peroxalate CL substrate (CPPO) and an aggregation-enhanced fluorescent emitter (BLSA), endogenous H2O2 is converted into sustained g

Photoactivated antifungal polymers prepared by PET-RAFT polymerization.

Rising invasive fungal infections necessitate the rapid development of new, highly efficient antifungal platforms with proven biocompatibility. We report a new class of photoactivated antifungal polymers that incorporate cationic, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic functionalities with a highly efficient photosensitizer. Our approach relies on the use of an acrylate-functionalized zinc(ii)-tetraphenylporphyrin (acryl-ZnTPP) monomer, that performs a dual role: it acts as both the photocatalyst for PET-RAFT polymerization, enabling controlled polymerization, and as an embedded photosensitizer capable

Identification of distinct pH- and zeaxanthin-dependent quenching in LHCSR3 from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Under high light, oxygenic photosynthetic organisms avoid photodamage by thermally dissipating absorbed energy, which is called nonphotochemical quenching. In green algae, a chlorophyll and carotenoid-binding protein, light-harvesting complex stress-related (LHCSR3), detects excess energy via a pH drop and serves as a quenching site. Using a combined in vivo and in vitro approach, we investigated quenching within LHCSR3 from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. In vitro two distinct quenching processes, individually controlled by pH and zeaxanthin, were identified within LHCSR3. The pH-dependent quenchi

WO3/SnO2 n-n Heterojunction Photoanode for Clean Selective Photochemical Preparation of Benzaldehyde.

Benzaldehyde is a vital intermediate for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Traditional chemical synthesis methods are costly and cause environmental pollution. Therefore, developing novel green synthesis approaches is growing increasingly important. A photoelectrochemical (PEC) system was constructed using a WO3/SnO2 n-n heterojunction photoanode, with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) acting as a selective hydrogen-atom-transfer mediator. The preparation parameters were optimized, and the material was characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

Iron (III) doped titanium dioxide coated dimensionally stable graphite anode electrode for electro-chemical treatment of domestic wastewater.

Availability of clean water is of concern due to pollution and diminishing supply pollution. However, purification is possible depending on the incorporated contaminants. Domestic wastewater contains dissolved organic matter and its remediation can be done by oxidation. The best oxidation can be achieved by electron transfer the same way metabolic processes occur. This study exploited the use of a film of iron (III) doped titanium dioxide applied on an electrode which was found to be effective. Natural light conditions generated electrons that migrated through the electrode leaving behind hole
