Barriers to Enacting Childhood Sun Safety Behavior: Findings from Focus Group Interviews Among Hispanic Parents in Miami.

Hispanics are generally diagnosed at more advanced stages of melanoma than non-Hispanic Whites, leading to lower survival rates. As skin cancer incidence is attributable to lifetime exposure to ultraviolet light, encouraging the performance of sun safety behaviors in childhood is an important strategy to address this divide. Problematically, we know little about the barriers to sun safety among Hispanic youth, especially among the Hispanics living in South Florida. To address this gap, we conducted focus groups among parents of Hispanic children aged 4-10 to understand the unique barriers to s

Children with Short Stature and Growth Failure: Heightism, Gender and Racial Disparities.

Growth is the single most important indication of the health of a child. Identification of growth disorders in all children is crucial as growth failure can be the first sign of a number of acute and chronic conditions. However, gender and racial biases have resulted in inequities in the identification, referral and treatment of children with growth disorders. In addition, short children have been impacted by a number of psychosocial issues. Heightism is prejudice or discrimination against individuals based on height, and refers to discrimination against individuals whose height is not within

The Effectiveness of HIV Prevention Interventions in Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Ethnic Minority Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Surveys in the United States and Europe have shown a plateau of new HIV cases, with certain regions and populations disproportionately affected by the disease. Ethnic minority women and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups are disproportionately affected by HIV. Previous reviews have focused on prevention interventions targeting ethnic minority men who have sex with men, have not accounted for socioeconomic status, or have included only interventions carried out in clinical settings. OBJECTIVES: To review and assess the effectiveness of HIV prevention interventions targeting soc

The multidisciplinary approach to prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease: creation of a vascular care network.

Vascular care, diagnosis, and intervention can be very complex. Multiple specialists commonly are involved in dealing with patients with systemic atherosclerotic disease. Although each specialist may provide state-of-the-art care with good result, it would be advantageous to minimize duplication of effort and thereby improve cost efficiency. Patients still could reap the benefit of all these disciplines if evaluated for their vascular complaint in a coordinated system. In doing so, atherosclerosis prevention with risk factor modification, as well as diagnosis and therapy for the presenting pro

The effects of knowledge, attitudes, and significant others on decisions to enroll in a clinical trial on osteoporosis: implications for recruitment of older African-American women.

This preliminary study explored the roles of knowledge, attitudes, and significant others on decisions of older African-American women to enroll in a clinical trial involving estrogen and osteoporosis. Sixteen older African-American women (average age 75 years) participated in three focus groups. Twelve of the women had enrolled in the clinical trial and four, although eligible, refused to enroll. Discussions revealed that knowledge of osteoporosis and estrogen and expectations of personal rewards and group benefits from medical research appear to differentiate the women who participated in th

From "Giant Leap" to a Maturing Specialty: A Commentary on the AGPA Practice Guidelines Second Edition.

The second edition of the AGPA Practice Guidelines reflects a significant maturation of group psychotherapy as a clinical and scientific specialty. Building on the strengths of the first edition, the updated guidelines expand their theoretical, empirical, and ethical foundations, with particular attention to multicultural orientation, social justice, group leadership training, and evolving practice contexts. In this commentary, we compare the original and updated editions of the guidelines, highlighting key continuities, including their aspirational stance, theoretical pluralism, and integrati

Lived experience and perceived barriers to self-care among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in South Ethiopia: a descriptive phenomenological study.

In resource-limited settings like Ethiopia, managing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) depends heavily on patients' self-care. Yet, this process is often disrupted by a complex interplay of emotional, cultural, and systemic factors. Existing research has insufficiently captured how these forces shape the lived experiences of patients managing diabetes in such settings. Therefore, this study explored the lived experiences and perceived barriers of self-care practices among individuals with T2DM attending hospitals in the Wolaita Zone of South Ethiopia.A descriptive phenomenological approach groun
