Stereocilia, also known as hair bundles, are mechanosensitive organelles of the sensory hair cells of the inner ear that can detect displacements on a nanometre scale and are supported by a rigid, dense core of actin filaments. Here we show that these actin-filament arrays are continuously remodelled by the addition of actin monomers to the stereocilium tips, and that the entire core of the stereocilium is renewed every 48 hours. This unexpected dynamic feature of stereocilia will help our understanding of how auditory sensory function develops and is maintained.

The management of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) has been materially altered by the availability of the 5 alpha-reductase type 2 inhibitor, finasteride. Nevertheless, this agent is only one component of successful management, and an understanding of the role of camouflage agents, surgical options, and other medical treatments is important. Because no treatment completely reverses baldness, it is important to communicate the limitations of each modality to the patient so that he has appropriate expectations of the outcome of any intervention. Patient counseling and support are also often relevant.

To understand hair-discoloration in relation to swimming, we examined sixty-seven elite swimmers of the Japan National Swimming Team and fifty-four, age-matched subjects as controls. The incidence of hair discoloration (61%) in the swimmers' group was significantly higher than that in controls (0%) (p<0.0001). We observed a case of folliculitis decalvans involving the beard and the scalp with a tufted hair folliculitis aspect in the occipital region. The presence of two clinical presentations in the same patient has not been reported in the literature. This would suggest that the two entities could be morphological aspects of the same pathological process which might cause either atrophy with loss or the annexes or tufted hair folliculitis depending upon the depts and destructive capacity of the inflammatory process.

Kerion celsi is a deep dermatophytic infection of the scalp. The diagnosis is based on the characteristic clinical picture and is verified by examination for the fungus. Treatment consists of griseofulvin in a dosage of 10 mg/kg/day. Ten patients with chronic hair pulling received trials of lithium carbonate of 2 to 14 months' duration. Eight patients demonstrated decreased hair pulling and mild to marked hair regrowth. Three responders experienced increased hair pulling subsequent to discontinuation of lithium treatment. Lithium's effect on hair pulling may be related to its observed benefits in treating aggressivity, impulsivity, and mood instability.

In a family suffering from monilethrix, at first sight only one generation seemed to be affected, suggesting a recessive mode of inheritance. A thorough examination of the scalp and body hair of all family members, however, revealed three other affected persons in two more generations proving autosomal dominant transmission. We consider this observation an additional argument against the existence of a recessive type of monilethrix which has been postulated in the past.

Five cases of Woolly hair, three generalised, and two localised are reported. On the first two, we carried out trichogrammes which were studied with polarized light, and on all five, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The data obtained coincided with previous descriptions (Pseudomonilethrix images, Pili torti, Trichorrhexis nodosa, reduced hair diameter, oval section following transversal cut, and a wavy-line disposition), although we emphasize the smaller number of layers of cuticle cells following the transversal cut, and the presence of Trichonodosis, not previously refered.
