Comparative study of infection control practices in DOTS/sputum microscopy centre in two different districts of state of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh of India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis (TB) is endemic in India. TB is transmitted through droplet infection and the transmission occurs when a person inhales droplet nuclei containing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Infection control practices play a major role in controlling the TB infection in healthcare settings and further prevents TB infection in the HCWs. The aim of the study is to conduct the cross sectional study for infection control practices in DOTS cum Sputum Microscopy Centre's under NTEP in Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) & Dehradun (Uttarakhand) districts with the objective to assess th

[Semmelweis Memorial Speech on the 150. Anniversary of His Death].

Two questions emerge as regards Semmelweis's reception and public memory: 1. How and why could turn Semmelweis into an emblematic representative of 19th-20th century science and medicine? 2. What sort of values and ideals does the fate of Semmelweis represent for us? Author calls our attention to the fact, that in Semmelweis's case, not only his discoveries and thought proved to be of abiding value, but during the last 120 years also his fate inspired a number of scientific, popular, non fictional and fictional analysis all over the world. Semmelweis, as a mythic representative of the modern "

Local production of WHO-recommended alcohol-based handrubs: feasibility, advantages, barriers and costs.

PROBLEM: Reduction of health-care-associated infections in low- and middle-income countries is hampered by inadequate supplies of soap and water and the lack or high cost of alcohol-based handrubs (ABHs). APPROACH: In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed and tested two formulations for ABHs that were suitable for production in health-care facilities. In 2011, the feasibility, advantages and costs of the local production of the two formulations - and the barriers to such production - were evaluated in an online survey. LOCAL SETTING: The survey included 34 health-care facilitie

Improvements in hand hygiene across New South Wales public hospitals: clean hands save lives, part III.

OBJECTIVE: To describe improvements in hand hygiene compliance after a statewide hand hygiene campaign conducted in New South Wales public hospitals. DESIGN AND SETTING: The campaign was conducted in all area health services in NSW (covering all 208 public hospitals). Alcohol-based hand rub (AHR) was introduced into all hospitals between March and June 2006. In each hospital, five overt observation surveys of hand hygiene compliance by health care workers (HCWs) were conducted: one pre-implementation survey and four post-implementation surveys (in August 2006, November 2006, February 2007 and

Hygiene precautions and the transmission of infections in radiology.

Healthcare-associated infections are a critical challenge for the public health sector. Most are acquired through contact, predominantly with the hands of health care personnel. Hand hygiene, therefore, is the single most effective measure for preventing and controlling infectious diseases. Recently, cases of acute hepatitis C occurred in patients who had undergone contrast-enhanced computed tomography. This was probably related to inadequate handling by health care staff. Rigorous compliance with standard precautions is therefore compulsory even in radiology, a setting traditionally considere

In vitro performance of eugenol and cinnamaldehyde on biofilms produced by Candidozyma auris.

Candidozyma auris has high rates of resistance to antifungals and hospital disinfectants. This yeast remains on surfaces for long periods, favoring the colonization of patients. Similarly Candida species, it produces persistent biofilms, which contribute to invasive infections, resulting in high mortality rates. In the search for new therapeutic alternatives of antifungal action, natural products have been widely studied due to their pharmacological potential and diverse biological activities. Eugenol and cinnamaldehyde are derived from the essential oils of cinnamon and clove, respectively, a

Antimicrobial susceptibility profile, Adherence and invasion to mammalian cells of Brucellamelitensis isolates.

Susceptibilities of 66 Brucella isolates were tested in vitro. All isolates were susceptible to doxycycline, gentamic in and streptomycin. In addition, propyl paraben, cresol and benzalkoniumchloride were found to be the most powerful tested preservative, disinfectant and antiseptic, respectively. All isolates adhered to and invaded into Vero cells by variable degrees. Adherence and invasion of most isolates were significantly reduced by: (1) pretreatment of test isolates with trypsin and sodium metaperiodate; (2) pretreatment of Vero cells with lipase, neuraminidase and sodium metaperiodate;

[Epidemiological situation of infectious diseases in Lvov and Cracow during and after World War I (until the year 1922)].

In Lvov and Cracow at the times of World War I, the infectious diseases such as tuberculosis followed by typhus fever, typhoid fever, dysentery, as well as scarlet fever, diphtheria, measles, whooping cough, smallpox, cholera and venereal diseases (particularly syphilis) posed one of the most significant and dangerous problems for inhabitants. Their increased prevalence was the result of deteriorating sanitary and living conditions of the city population. The spread of epidemic infectious diseases was enhanced by marching troops, migration of civilians and war prisoners, return of large groups

Infectious diseases in the operating room.

Patients with infectious diseases have special implications for infection control in the operating room. The increased use and abuse of antibiotics has ushered in a category of resistant organisms. These multiresistant organisms are spread by direct or indirect contact, primarily from the hands of caregivers or contact with contaminated environmental surfaces. Another category of infectious diseases is prions (pronounced pree-ons). Unlike other infectious diseases, human prions diseases are not spread through routine exposures such as direct contact, droplet, and airborne routes. The causative

COVID-19: the implications and consequences of prolonged lockdown and COVID-19 vaccine cost in a low-middle income country.

Lockdowns and just recently, the COVID-19 vaccines, are amongst the disease containment measures instituted globally to check the spread of COVID-19. Prolonged lockdowns are however, not sustainable in low resource economies like Nigeria, where up to 70% of her population live on less than a dollar a day, with the majority, either unemployed, or working in the private/informal sector and depending on daily earnings for survival. If the lockdown remains sustained, it would not be long before the largely poor citizens starve to death. Also, spending over US $3.9 billion on COVID-19 vaccines for

A systematic review of emerging human coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak: focus on disinfection methods, environmental survival, and control and prevention strategies.

Recently, an outbreak of a novel human coronavirus which is referred to as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization (WHO) was identified in Wuhan, China. To help combat the pandemic, a systematic review (SR) was performed to collect all available studies concerning inactivation methods, environmental survival, and control and prevention strategies. A comprehensive literature survey yielded 42 eligible studies which included in the SR. The results confirmed that the WHO recommended two alcohol-based hand rub formulations (ethanol 7

[Action of physical agents on microorganisms].

Among numerous physical agents exerting their deleterious effect on microorganisms only a few have been applied to sterilisation or disinfection used for medical purposes. Temperature is the most important agent, which from one side in a very wide range enables supporting of metabolic processes of psycho-, mezo- and thermophilic microorganisms, but beyond these limits causes their death. High temperature induces at first damage of cytoplasmic membrane and then denaturation of RNA leading to death. On the other hand, a low temperature slowly decreasing below 0 degree C induces crystallisation o

Mobilizing a Community-Academic Partnership to Provide DIY Handwashing Stations to Skid Row Residents During COVID-19.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is having a devastating impact on global health. In the United States and abroad, there is concern for how the novel coronavirus will affect vulnerable populations, including people experiencing homelessness. Individuals who lack stable housing are more likely to have preexisting health conditions and limited access to basic preventative hygiene practices such as handwashing and sanitizing. The situation has become critical in Los Angeles' Skid Row neighborhood, where nearly 5,000 unhoused residents (13% of the city's homeless population) reside on any given
