Mercury vapors are released from paint containing mercury compounds used to prolong the shelf-life of interior latex paint. To determine whether homes recently painted with paint containing mercury had elevated indoor-air mercury concentrations, we studied 37 Ohio homes. Twenty-one homes painted with mercury-containing paint a median of 86 days earlier were compared with 16 homes not recently painted with mercury-containing paint. The current study examined the cumulative risk, age of initiation, and functional impairments among adults with substance use problems (N = 1748) by child abuse status. Child abuse was associated with earlier initiation of marijuana, cocaine, and heroin use, and had greater risks for all the drugs studied (hazard ratios, 1.7-3.2). A wide variety of irritants can lead to respiratory failure after inhalation injuries. We present a case of adult respiratory distress syndrome after exposure to a fluorocarbon resin (PFF 1020) used as ski wax. The patient sustained a mild but prolonged exposure to this substance, which subsequently led to symptoms of severe respiratory failure over the next 24 hours.
