Cervical spine alignment in the youth football athlete: recommendations for emergency transportation.

BACKGROUND: Substantial literature exists regarding recommendations for the on-field treatment and subsequent transportation of adult collision-sport athletes with a suspected injury to the cervical spine. PURPOSE: To develop an evidence-based recommendation for transportation of suspected spine-injured youth football players. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: Three lateral radiographs were obtained in supine to include the occiput to the cervical thoracic junction from 31 youth football players (8-14 years). Each child was imaged while wearing helmet and shoulder pads, w

Congenital placental-cerebral adhesion: an unusual case of amniotic band sequence. Case report.

Amniotic band sequence is a disruption sequence having a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from partial amputations to major craniofacial and limb-body wall defects. Most reported cases of placental-cerebral adhesion pertain to patients with severe craniofacial defects who were either stillborn or who died a few hours after birth. The authors present a case of a male infant born with a placental-cerebral adhesion through a cranial defect. This adhesion was separated at birth, and duraplasty and primary scalp closure were performed. A detailed examination of the placenta reveale

Perceptions of surfboard riders regarding the need for protective headgear.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the use of protective headgear by surfers, their perceptions of its usefulness, and barriers to its use. METHODS: A researcher-administered questionnaire was used to undertake a cross-sectional survey of 646 surfboard riders at 8 popular surfing beaches in Victoria, Australia. The main outcome measures were rate of use of headgear, perceptions of head injury risk relative to a range of other activities, perceptions regarding headgear, and the reasons for not wearing headgear. RESULTS: Most surfers were men (90.2%), young (mean age 28.2 years), and experienced (mean year

Cycling and alcohol.

PURPOSE: To compare the accident and the psychosocial circumstances and the consequences of the injuries sustained by intoxicated (alcohol) and sober cyclists in road traffic accidents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A telephone interview was conducted with 207 adults injured 3 years earlier. The group was selected from the list of 1278 cyclists registered at the hospitals in Göteborg in 1995 and 1996. Ninety-five of the 207 had been registered as under the influence of alcohol and 112, registered as sober, constituted a matched group. RESULTS: Compared with the sober group, the intoxicated cyclists

[Present views on boxing--Henner's legacy].

Fifty years ago academician Henner formulated clearly the negative view of neurologists on boxing as practised in his time. It was his merit that a protective helmet was introduced, many of his demands concerning the regime after a KO and the importance of medical examinations were no yet adequately appreciated. At the opportunity of the 100th anniversary of Henner's birth and the fiftieth anniversary of the Clinic he founded in the premises of saint Catherine the author discusses contemporary views on boxing, the risk of repeated injuries for the development of encephalopathia pugilistica and

Fatal injuries in motorcycle riders according to helmet use.

OBJECTIVE: Helmets have been shown to be effective in preventing head injuries in motorcyclists, but some studies have suggested that helmets may cause injury to parts of the head or neck because they add mass to the head. DESIGN: This study examined patterns of fatal injuries in helmeted and unhelmeted motorcyclists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Coroner reports, hospital records, and police reports for motorcyclists fatally injured in crashes from July 1, 1988 through October 31, 1989 were examined. All injury diagnoses were abstracted and coded to the 1990 version of The Abbreviated Injury Scale

Evaluation of the penetration test for bicyclists' helmets: comparative performance of hard shell and foam helmets.

A project was undertaken to evaluate the utility of the penetration test in the Australian Standard devoted to the testing of lightweight helmets for bicycle riders. The project revealed aspects of the protective performance of conventional hard shell helmets and recently developed helmets manufactured entirely from expanded polystyrene foam. Hard shell helmets were found to provide good performance in a range of loading conditions applied to them during testing. In contrast, foam helmets provided very poor resistance to concentrated loads produced during impacts with small, sharp objects but

Dose reduction in CT using bismuth shielding: measurements and Monte Carlo simulations.

In this research, using direct measurements and Monte Carlo calculations, the potential dose reduction achieved by bismuth shielding in computed tomography was evaluated. The patient dose was measured using an ionisation chamber in a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) phantom that had five measurement points at the centre and periphery. Simulations were performed using the MCNPX code. For both the bare and the bismuth-shielded phantom, the differences of dose values between experiment and simulation were within 9%. The dose reductions due to the bismuth shielding were 1.2-55% depending on the measu

Bicycle accidents and injuries among adult cyclists.

Bicycling accidents comprised the greatest recreational source of Emergency Room visits last year, numbering over 500,000. To evaluate cycling morbidity, 492 active adult bicyclists from a metropolitan area responded to a survey to determine cycle use and accident patterns. Nearly half (46%) have been involved in an accident with the cyclists being at fault 58.7% of the time. Soft tissue injuries to the extremities predominated with 9.3% of all injuries requiring hospitalization (average, 7 days) and 22.5% missing days from work or school. Significant factors contributing to bicycle accidents

A comparison of frequency and magnitude of head impacts between Pee Wee And Bantam youth ice hockey.

The purpose of this research was to compare the frequency and magnitude of head impact events between Pee Wee and Bantam ice hockey players. Videos of Pee Wee and Bantam boys' ice hockey were analysed to determine the frequency and type of head impact events. The head impact events were then reconstructed in the laboratory using physical and finite element models to determine the magnitude of strain in the brain tissues. The results showed that Pee Wee boys experienced more head impacts from elbows and boards, while Bantam players had more head impacts to the glass. Pee Wee and Bantam players

Therapeutic efficacy of individual head orthoses in infants with positional plagiocephaly.

PURPOSE: Regarding the therapy for positional plagiocephaly, a distinction is made between physiotherapeutic-osteopathic treatment and treatment using individual head orthoses. This retrospective study aimed to compare the outcome of these treatment modalities for correcting positional plagiocephaly in infants. METHODS: From an initial pool of 148 patients, two groups were matched based on age, sex, and Argenta classification. Therapy was either helmet therapy in combination with physiotherapeutic-osteopathic therapy (experimental group/95 patients) or physical therapy alone (control group/28

Utilization of postcranioplasty skull molding caps in the treatment of Apert syndrome.

Patients with Apert syndrome have bilateral coronal craniosynostosis as one of their many distinguishing features. Surgical correction of this deformity is the mainstay of treatment. Abnormal widening of the skull base progresses despite cranioplasty. We describe a patient for whom a skull molding cap (SMC) was used after barrel-stave osteotomy and orbital rim advancement. This successfully restricted widening of her skull base while allowing growth in other dimensions. Utilization of skull molding caps after cranial surgery shows promise in this setting.

Pontomedullary tears and other gross brainstem injuries after vehicular accidents.

In a series of 988 autopsied victims of road crashes, there were 36 (3.6%) cases of gross primary brainstem injury. These fell into three groups. The first comprised eight cases of pontomedullary tearing without other gross brain injury: in seven of these, there were associated atlanto-occipital dislocations and/or high cervical fracture-dislocations. The usual cause appeared to be facial impact inducing acute hyperextension. Second, there were 17 cases of pontomedullary tearing associated with other brainstem lacerations and/or major damage elsewhere in the brain: in all, there were fractures

Combat body armor and injuries to the head, face, and neck region: a systematic review.

There has been a reported increase in combat-related head, face, and neck (HFN) injuries among service personnel wearing combat body armor (CBA) that have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Modern ceramic plate CBA has decreased the incidence of fatal-penetrating injuries to the torso but offers no protection to the limbs and face which remain exposed to gunshot wounds and fragments from explosive devices. The aim of this review was to systematically summarize the literature reporting on HFN injuries sustained by combat personnel wearing CBA and to highlight recommendations for increased protec

Identification of Factors Associated with Both Frequency and Severity of Deer-Related Motorcycle Crashes.

INTRODUCTION: Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to injury when encountering large animals such as deer in the roadway. The frequency of these events, factors associated with their occurrence, and the extent of injuries sustained from such crashes are not yet well described. METHODS: A review of 10 years (2012-2021) of statewide motorcycle crash reports from a single state with a large deer population was performed to ascertain the frequency of deer-associated motorcycle crashes. Environmental and roadway conditions, as well as motorcyclist age, gender, and helmet usage, were identifie
