Sleep Health Education to Promote Public Health: Attitudes and Desired Learning Goals among Social Work Students.

Social workers are often front line behavioral health providers for underserved populations, many of whom experience sleep disturbances. Inadequate sleep presents a public health challenge and is associated with many adverse physical health and mental health consequences. Social workers are uniquely positioned to promote sleep health among individuals experiencing health inequities. However, sleep is rarely included as part of the curricula in social work programs in the U.S. We conducted qualitative formative research to investigate social work students' perceptions of sleep education and des

Experience and knowledge of Lyme disease: A scoping review of patient-provider communication.

There has been limited research on patient-provider communication dynamics regarding Lyme disease (LD) diagnosis and treatment. Evidence suggests communication in the clinical encounter improves when both patient and healthcare provider (HCP) have concordant orientations (or beliefs) on discussed topics, resulting in higher patient satisfaction and care outcomes. The purpose of this scoping review was to characterize and summarize current research findings on patient and provider knowledge and experiences regarding LD - two factors that may influence the orientation of both patients and provid

Evaluating a school-based trachoma curriculum in Tanzania.

Trachoma remains a public health problem in a number of sub-Saharan Africa countries; behavioral change and environmental improvements are cornerstones of prevention efforts. Evidence of successful health education are few in Africa. Health education efforts through primary schools have recently been developed and adopted in Tanzania. We evaluated changes from 2004 to 2005 in knowledge and reported behavioral change as well as nasal and ocular discharge and clean faces in selected schools in central Tanzania. This was a mixed-methods study involving both schoolchildren and school teachers. We

Is the current public health message on UV exposure correct?

Current sun safety messages stress the importance of sun protection in avoiding the consequences of excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), such as skin cancers, cataracts and other eye diseases, and viral infections caused by UV-induced immunosuppression. However, adequate exposure to UVR has an important role in human health, primarily through UV-induced production of vitamin D, a hormone essential to bone health. Vitamin D insufficiency may be associated with increased risks of some cancers, autoimmune diseases and mental health disorders such as schizophrenia. Here, we review th

Assessing political priority for reproductive health in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is among the top six countries contributing to the highest numbers of maternal deaths globally. The Ethiopian total fertility rate was estimated at 4.8 in 2011, and the use of contraceptives by married women was 29%. Lack of knowledge, cultural stigma surrounding abortion, and barriers to access of services contribute to persistently high rates of unsafe abortion and abortion-related mortality. This study seeks to assess the generation and institutionalization of political priority for reproductive health within the political systems of Ethiopia. Interviews with key policy makers, gov

Probabilities and health risks: a qualitative approach.

Health risks, defined in terms of the probability that an individual will suffer a particular type of adverse health event within a given time period, can be understood as referencing either natural entities or complex patterns of belief which incorporate the observer's values and knowledge, the position adopted in the present paper. The subjectivity inherent in judgements about adversity and time frames can be easily recognised, but social scientists have tended to accept uncritically the objectivity of probability. Most commonly in health risk analysis, the term probability refers to rates e

Translation to practice: a randomised, controlled study of an evidence-based booklet for breast-care nurses in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom (UK), it was documented that a problem of knowledge transfer existed within the speciality of breast-cancer care, thus depriving patients of receiving optimal care. Despite increasingly robust research evidence indicating recommendation of whole body exercise for people affected by breast cancer, commensurate changes to practice were not noted amongst breast-care nurses (BCNs). AIM: To evaluate the effect of a targeted booklet, Exercise and Breast Cancer: A Booklet for Breast-Care Nurses, on changes in knowledge, reported practice, and attitudes of BCNs in th

Survey of Knowledge and Attitudes about Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Among Italian Anaesthetists.

OBJECTIVE: As the care of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) patients remains heterogeneous, we hypothesized that it may reflect insufficient OSA knowledge/awareness among clinicians. METHODS: OSA Knowledge/Attitude Questionnaire (OSAKA) was translated into Italian and distributed to anaesthetists attending SIAARTI National Congress and Airways courses and Hands-on Workshops from October 2012 to June 2013. RESULTS: In total, 370 anaesthetists returned the questionnaires (response rate, 62%); the median (interquartile range [IQR]) knowledge score was 12 (10-14), and the range was 1-17 with no dif

Assessing family influence on adolescent healthy eating: insights from knowledge, attitudes, and practices in a cross-sectional survey in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Poor dietary habits in adolescents contribute to the development of non-communicable diseases in adulthood. While family influence by parenting style, food parenting practice and household income on adolescent eating habits has been well-established, other family factors such as parental health conditions as well as the impact on dietary knowledge and attitudes in adolescents are underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the relative importance of family factors on adolescent healthy eating using the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) model. METHODS: A cross-sectional onl

Nurses' Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Pressure Injury Prevention: A Systematic Review.

Pressure ulcers (PUs) (also termed pressure injuries [PIs]) remain a major patient safety issue, particularly in critical care and other high-risk healthcare settings. Nurses are central to PUs/PIs prevention; however, deficiencies in knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices among nursing staff may negatively affect patient outcomes. To systematically synthesise global evidence on nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to PUs/PIs prevention, and to identify factors influencing preventive performance. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Ele

Needs of professionals working with individuals with FASD in Spain.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is one of the main preventable causes of developmental disorders and health anomalies in children. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a diagnostic term that encompasses a range of physical, cognitive, and behavioural impairments. Although this condition is gradually attracting greater attention among professionals, knowledge and awareness of its real impact - and of how to intervene effectively - remains limited. This lack of understanding shapes the work of professionals when they must support individuals affected by FASD. The aim of this study is to explore t
