Risk factors for low birthweight among multinational mothers: results from the first population-based maternal and infant health monitoring system in the capital emirate of the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW; <2500 g) remains a major contributor to neonatal morbidity and mortality. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a high-income country (HIC) with a developing economy. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), population-level evidence on LBW determinants remains limited despite reported national prevalence being higher (13.9%) than in many high-income settings (Less than 7%). Using Phase one data from the Abu Dhabi Maternal and Infant Health Monitoring System, we examined factors associated with LBW and identified priorities for refinement for the monitoring system. MET

Physical activity and social cognitive theory variables in Hispanic and non-Hispanic adults with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is lower in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) than the general population, partly explained by social-cognitive theory (SCT) variables. To date, little is known about PA and SCT constructs among Hispanics adults with MS, a group that experiences notable health disparities. We compared PA and SCT variables between Hispanic and non-Hispanic adults with MS and examined associations among these variables within each group. METHODS: Hispanic (n = 35; mean age=41.5 ± 12.5 years) and non-Hispanic (n = 35; mean age=41.7 ± 12.1 years) adults with MS completed onli

"You have to go through it and have your children": reproductive experiences among women with vulvodynia.

BACKGROUND: Vulvodynia is a potentially debilitating chronic pain condition affecting the vulva (external genitalia) in women, with typical age of onset during the early-to mid-reproductive years. Yet, virtually nothing is known about the thoughts, feelings and experience of vulvodynia patients regarding conception, pregnancy and delivery; including the effect that a hallmark symptom, dyspareunia (painful sex), can have on a couple's physical and emotional ability to conceive. We sought to describe these experiences and beliefs among women with vulvodynia who were pregnant or who recently had

Barriers and facilitators to transitional care in older adults following hip fracture: A mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture is a leading cause of disability and mortality in older adults, affecting an estimated 2.6 million people annually worldwide. Transitional care, the coordinated management of the shift from hospital to community, is central to functional recovery yet remains poorly systematised across health systems. AIM: To identify the barriers and facilitators to hospital-to-community transitional care in older adults (≥65 years) following hip fracture surgery. METHODS: A mixed-methods systematic review following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) convergent integrated approach. Fo

Psychiatric and psychosocial determinants of suicidality: Findings from a national mental health survey in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Various psychiatric disorders are linked to suicidal behaviors, but evidence from nationally representative populations is limited. Few studies have identified factors distinguishing individuals with suicidal ideation from those who attempt suicide. Using national mental health survey data, this study examines the associations between multiple mental disorders and suicidality and identifies key clinical and psychosocial correlates of suicidal acts among ideators. METHODS: Data were drawn from 5511 adults (representing 42.0 million nationwide) in the National Mental Health Survey o

Content Analysis of Social Determinants of Health Accelerator Plans Using Artificial Intelligence: A Use Case for Public Health Practitioners.

CONTEXT: Public health practice involves the development of reports and plans, including funding progress reports, strategic plans, and community needs assessments. These documents are valuable data sources for program monitoring and evaluation. However, practitioners rarely have the bandwidth to thoroughly and rapidly review large amounts of primarily qualitative data to support real-time and continuous program improvement. Systematically examining and categorizing qualitative data through content analysis is labor-intensive. Large language models (LLMs), a type of generative artificial intel

Intensified Local Resource Mobilization for the Polio Eradication Initiative: The Experience of World Health Organization in Nigeria During 2008-2015.

BACKGROUND: Since the World Health Assembly (WHA) resolved in 1988 to eradicate poliovirus, several rounds of immunization campaigns have been conducted by member states. By 2000, with the support of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners, the number of polio cases decreased by 99%. Eradicating the remaining 1% proved to be more challenging. Although the GPEI, being the largest public health project, required >$9 billion between 1988 and 2012, economic analysis showed the estimated incremental net benefits of $40 billion-$50 billion between 1988 and 2035. In 2012, the WHA decl

Obstacles to effective implementation of interprofessional education in Sudan.

The traditional approach of operating isolated medical and health professional schools has created a disconnect between the rapidly evolving challenges in healthcare and the static nature of educational systems. This disconnect has hindered the ability of educational institutions to adapt effectively to the changing health needs of populations. Interprofessional education (IPE), which fosters collaboration and interaction among various health professions, provides a promising framework for addressing these issues by promoting teamwork, shared understanding, and integrated practice. However, im

Key Decision Points for Personalization and Customization in Self-Guided Digital Suicide Prevention: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Young adults in the United States experience high rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) but low engagement with traditional care, highlighting the need for accessible and scalable digital interventions. Self-guided digital safety planning interventions (SPIs) can expand access to support but introduce important decisions about what content to deliver, when systems should intervene, and how users retain control over system actions. Personalization, defined as system-initiated adaptation, and customization, defined as user-initiated control, may offer complementary approache
