An updated list of mosquito species in Armenia and Transcaucasian region responsible for Dirofilaria transmission: A review.

Canine dirofilariasis is a world-wide distributed mosquito-borne helminthiasis that has a potential zoonotic impact. This disease is a serious problem in Southern Caucasus region, including Armenia. Average extensity of Dirofilaria infection in canids in Armenia is 26.9%. At present, 77 mosquito species (Diptera: Culicidae) are presumed to have a role in the transmission of dirofilariasis. 80 species of Culicidae family mosquitoes are registered in Southern Caucasus Region, and 31 of them are described in Armenia. The following species of Culicidae can serve as vectors of Dirofilaria spp. in A…

Drug discovery technologies: Caenorhabditis elegans as a model for anthelmintic therapeutics.

Helminthiasis is one of the gravest problems worldwide. There is a growing concern on less available anthelmintics and the emergence of resistance creating a major threat to human and livestock health resources. Novel and broad-spectrum anthelmintics are urgently needed. The free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans could address this issue through automated high-throughput technologies for the screening of large chemical libraries. This review discusses the strong advantages and limitations for using C elegans as a screening method for anthelmintic drug discovery. C elegans is the best mode…

Soil-transmitted helminth infections.

More than a quarter of the world's population is at risk of infection with the soil-transmitted helminths Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm (An … however, it remains beyond doubt that treatment reduces the severe consequences of soil-transmitted helminthiasis. We highlight the need for refined diagnostic tools and effective control options to scale up public health interventions and improve clinical detection and management of these infections.

A filtration-based rapid test using a partially purified third-stage larval antigen to detect specific antibodies for the diagnosis of gnathostomiasis.

Human gnathostomiasis is an emerging food-borne parasitic disease caused by nematodes of the genus Gnathostoma. Currently, serological tests … ficity were 96.7% (29/30) and 100% (25/25), respectively. The cross-reactivity with sera from other helminthiasis patients ranged from 0 to 4%, with an average of 1.6% (2/125). DIGFA using a partially purified L3 antigen was not only simple and rapid, but also more accurate than standard assays for the diagnosis of human gnathostomiasis. DIGFA may represent a p …

[Neurocysticercosis in Spain. Apropos 4 cases seen in immigrant patients from endemic countries].

Neurocysticercosis is a helminthiasis of the central nervous system produced by the encysted larvae of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium. We report 4 cases of neurocysticercosis observed in immigrants from endemic areas (India and Latin America). Three of the patients were diagnosed because of new onset of seizures, all of the no received anthelmintic therapy with favourable outcome. The fourth case was a form known as racemose cysticercosis. She was admitted because of CNS sensorial symptoms with later development of severe intracranial hypertension that required surgical treatment. All the cas…

[Epidemiology of alveolar echinococcosis in France. 1. Intestinal helminths in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) from Haute-Savoie].

In the course of an epidemiological survey concerning the alveolar echinococcosis and its causative agent, Echinococcus multilocularis, the autopsies of 150 wild red foxes captured in the department of the Haute-Savoie between December 1983 and August 1988 disclosed 139 cases of intestinal helminthiasis with cestodes and nematodes; no trematode was found. Multiple infections were frequent. The cestoda recorded consist of the following species: Taenia crassiceps: 44 cases (29%); Echinococcus multilocularis: 34 cases (23%); Taenia polyacantha: 22 cases (14%); Mesocestoides litteratus: 7 cases (4…

[Diagnostic PCR in veterinary parasitology: tritrichomonosis, neosporosis/toxoplasmosis echinococcosis/cysticercosis].

The PCR is now widely introduced as a diagnostic and epidemiological tool in veterinary and human parasitology. Certain parasitic infections are detected using PCR with much higher sensitivity compared to conventional methods, and novel molecular approaches are considered for the analysis of infectiological questions. A broad spectrum of parasites relevant for veterinary and human parasitology already can be diagnosed by PCR. In the present review article, PCR-based methods developped or applied at the Institute of Parasitology in Berne for the detection of protozoan infections (Tritrichomonos

The pathoparasitology of the alimentary tract and pancreas of nonhuman primates: a review.

A review of the literature concerning the gross and histologic lesions associated with protozoal and metazoal parasitism in the alimentary tract and pancreas of nonhuman primates is presented. In addition, the natural history, morphology, life cycle, methods for diagnosis, and potential for zoonotic disease are reviewed briefly for each parasite discussed. The parasite species reviewed in detail are those most common or most likely to produce lesions in the alimentary tract and pancreas of the nonhuman primate host. All parasites, both pathogenic and nonpathogenic, in each major group (protozo

Studies on helminthosis at the Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine (CTVM).

The research work relating to helminths, which has been conducted within the Helminthology Section of the CTVM, often in collaboration with colleagues from the tropics is reviewed and placed into a historical perspective. The research has, in the main, concentrated on the trematodes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica and the cestodes Taenia saginata and Taenia solium, but work on other parasites including gastro-intestinal nematodes is also considered. All of these parasites are of obvious veterinary/economic importance particularly in the tropics and subtropics. While the zoonotic impor

Activity of ivermectin against canine intestinal helminths.

The anthelmintic activity of ivermectin was tested in 98 dogs against adult ascarids (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, A braziliense), and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), and against experimentally induced infections (4th-stage larvae) of T canis and A caninum. Dosage levels tested were single subcutaneous injections of 50, 100, 200, or 400 micrograms/kg of body weight with appropriate vehicle-treated controls. A minimum of 4 (usually 5) dogs were tested with each parasite and dosage level. The lowest dosage level, 50 micrograms/kg, and all higher dosage level

Innovative approaches to improve serodiagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis infection.

Strongyloidiasis is a helminthiasis of neglected condition that has no gold standard parasitological diagnosis due to the intermittent release of larvae in feces. This study aimed to use an scFv (single chain variable fragment) obtained by Phage Display, previously validated to detect immune complexes in serum samples from individuals infected with Strongyloides stercoralis by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Now the ability of scFv to detect the immune complexes was verified by immunofluorescence, flow cytometry using magnetic beads and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). As ELISA, the…

Urogenital Schistosomiasis-History, Pathogenesis, and Bladder Cancer.

Schistosomiasis is the most important helminthiasis worldwide in terms of morbidity and mortality. Most of the infections occurs in Africa, which about two thirds are caused by Schistosoma haematobium. The infection with S. haematobium is considered carcinogenic leading to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder. Additionally, it is responsible for female genital schistosomiasis leading to infertility and higher risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. Remarkably, a recent outbreak in Corsica (France) drew attention to its potential re-merg…

Missed opportunity of deworming a Maasai boy from nomadic family leading to life threatening intestinal obstruction.

Mass deworming against soil-transmitted helminthiasis, including Ascaris lumbricoides (AL), is one of the largest public health interventions in low- and middle-income countries. The prevalence of A. lumbricoides in Tanzania is 6.8%. We present a 3-year-old male of a known Tanzanian nomadic tribe (Masaai tribe) with history of missed deworming, who was brought to the emergency department with a 3-day history of constipation, nonprojectile, bilious vomiting, generalized abdominal distension and pain. He was diagnosed with intestinal obstruction by the use of a plain abdominal X-ray, which revea…

The Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases: A Case Study Exemplifying How Foreign Assistance Funding Can Be Catalytic in Reducing the Burden of Major Global Health Conditions.

In 2006, following direct advocacy and published rationale, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) established a neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) program to support the scale-up of integrated platforms to target the elimination and control of 5 NTDs-lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, and soil-transmitted helminthiasis. By 2017, more than 2.3 billion NTD treatments had been delivered to at-risk populations in 25 countries, leveraging $19 billion in donated drugs-approximately $26 dollars in donated medicine per $1 spent by USAID. As a result, most of…

Mapping, monitoring, and surveillance of neglected tropical diseases: towards a policy framework.

As national programmes respond to the new opportunities presented for scaling up preventive chemotherapy programmes for the coadministration of drugs to target lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis, and trachoma, possible synergies between existing disease-specific policies and protocols need to be examined. In this report we compare present policies for mapping, monitoring, and surveillance for these diseases, drawing attention to both the challenges and opportunities for integration. Although full integration of all elements of mapping, monitor…
