Human immunodeficiency virus and chlamydia/gonorrhea testing among heterosexual college students: who is getting tested and why do some not?

OBJECTIVE: This study explored college students' reported history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and chlamydia/gonorrhea and characteristics of students reporting testing. Additionally, it assessed their motivation regarding future testing and reasons for lack of motivation. PARTICIPANTS: The sample consisted of 292 sexually experienced college students self-identifying as heterosexual at a midwestern university. METHODS: Participants completed a 26-item survey during the 2010-2011 academic year. RESULTS: Demographics (sex, age, race/ethnicity), behaviors (higher numbers of sex partn

Overestimation of heterosexually attributed AIDS deaths is associated with immature psychological defence mechanisms and clitoral masturbation during penile-vaginal intercourse.

Research shows that (1) greater use of immature psychological defence mechanisms (associated with psychopathology) is associated with lesser orgasmic consistency from penile-vaginal intercourse (PVI), but greater frequency of other sexual behaviours and greater condom use for PVI, and (2) unlike the vectors of receptive anal intercourse and punctures, HIV acquisition during PVI is extremely unlikely in reasonably healthy persons. However, the relationship between overestimation of AIDS deaths due to 'heterosexual transmission' (often misunderstood as only PVI), sexual behaviour and mental heal

Male circumcision and risk of HIV infection among heterosexual African American men attending Baltimore sexually transmitted disease clinics.

BACKGROUND: Male circumcision has received international attention as an intervention for reducing HIV infection among high-risk heterosexual men; however, few US studies have evaluated its association with the risk of HIV infection. METHODS: We analyzed visit records for heterosexual African American men who underwent HIV testing while attending sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in Baltimore, Maryland, from 1993 to 2000. We used multivariable binomial regression to evaluate associations between circumcision and the risk of HIV infection among visits by patients with known and unknow

Assessing the physical violence component of the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales when used in heterosexual couples: An item response theory analysis.

Although there are psychometric evaluations of the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2) when applied to heterosexual relationships, none has used item response theory (IRT). To address this gap, the present paper assesses the instrument's physical violence subscale. The CTS2 was applied to 764 women who also responded for their partners. Single dimensionality assumption was corroborated. A 2-parameter logistic IRT model was used for estimating location and discriminating power of each item. Differential item functioning and item information pattern along the violence continuum were assessed.

[Peripheral precocious puberty caused by a juvenile granulosa cell ovarian tumor, with iso and heterosexual manifestations in a six years old girl].

A six years old girl consulted due to mammary development. On physical examination, clitoris enlargement and a tumor localized in the abdominal-pelvic region were observed. Hormonal study disclosed elevated testosterone and estradiol levels. On exploratory laparotomy, a right ovarian tumor was observed and a right salpingooophorectomy was performed. The contemporary biopsy informed a disgerminoma, leading to a surgical staging of the tumor. The definitive pathological diagnosis was a juvenile granular cell tumor, limited to the ovary. In the postoperative period, estradiol and testosterone lev

Kaposi's-sarcoma-associated herpesvirus is detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of HIV-infected homosexuals more often than in heterosexuals.

PURPOSE: The Kaposi's-sarcoma-associated herpesvirus is thought likely to play an important part in the pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma, which is the most common tumor in AIDS patients. To determine whether peripheral blood is also infected by the virus, we prospectively tested mononuclear cells from HIV-infected individuals, both with and without Kaposi's sarcoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-three patients with AIDS were studied. Twenty-three were homosexuals, and 10 of these patients had Kaposi's sarcoma. All 10 nonhomosexual patients were free of Kaposi's sarcoma. PCR amplification of pe

Personality disorder and sexual risk taking among homosexually active and heterosexually active men attending a genito-urinary medicine clinic.

61 homosexually active men and 57 heterosexually active men attending a genito-urinary medicine clinic were assessed for personality disorder and sexual risk taking. Of the homosexually active men, 23/61 (38%) were found to have personality disorders, as against 16/57 (28%) of the heterosexually active men. Multiple regression analysis indicated that antisocial personality disorder (p < 0.001) was the main predictor of sexual risk taking for the homosexually active clinic attenders. In the case of the heterosexually active men attending the clinic, sexual risk taking was predicted by cocaine u

Hepatitis C virus infection among sexually promiscuous groups and the heterosexual partners of hepatitis C virus infected index cases.

To define the role of sexual transmission in the spread of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, a seroprevalence study of antibodies against HCV was performed in populations at high risk for sexually transmitted diseases. Subjects included 310 female prostitutes, 88 clients of prostitutes, 168 homosexual men and 147 stable heterosexual partners of index cases reactive for anti-HCV (98 of whom were partners of drug addicts coinfected with HCV and human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]). All subjects denied prior transfusion or intravenous drug use. Controls were 400 voluntary blood donors selected ra

Live birth rate after ART with donor semen in single women, lesbian couples and heterosexual couples: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the live birth rate (LBR) after assisted reproductive technology (ART) with donor semen among single women, lesbian couples and heterosexual couples. Searches of PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library up to September 2025 identified seven eligible studies including 19,457 women. Separate analyses were performed for intrauterine insemination (IUI) and IVF. For IUI, single women had a significantly lower LBR than heterosexual couples [risk ratio (RR) = 0.70, 95% CI 0.66-0.74] and lesbian couples (RR = 0.67, 95% CI 0.63-0.72), whereas no signific

Does sports participation reduce disparities in anxiety and depression symptoms among sexual minority and heterosexual undergraduate students? A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Although sports participation is recognized for its psychological benefits, it remains unclear whether participation in competitive sports may produce different effects on these symptoms among sexual minority university students compared to their heterosexual peers. This study aimed to compare anxiety and depression symptoms between 524 undergraduate students engaged and not engaged in sports competitions by sexual orientation. METHODS: With cross-sectional design, this study included 524 undergraduate students, categorized as engaged in sports participation or not engaged, and

Navigating intersectional stigma and post-traumatic growth among heterosexually married men who have sex with men living with HIV in China.

BACKGROUND: Heterosexually married men who have sex with men living with HIV (MSMW-HIV+) in China occupy a uniquely marginalized position shaped by intersecting stigmas related to HIV, same-sex behavior, and marital norms. Existing research has largely emphasized risk, pathology, and moral failure, with limited attention to how individuals navigate, reinterpret, and potentially transform these experiences under structural constraint. Drawing on post-traumatic growth (PTG) theory and an intersectionality framework, this study examined how growth and adaptation unfold within a collectivist socio

Sexual Consent as a Continuous Process in a Sexually Diverse Sample: Women and Bisexual Individuals Are Less Sexually Coercive Than Men and Heterosexual Individuals.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the study of sexual consent, particularly among diverse sexual samples, including from a gender perspective. The concept and definition of sexual consent are evolving from a static, general, and pre-sexual activity issue to a dynamic process that must be present throughout the entire sexual encounter. Therefore, it is necessary to use instruments that consider this dimension, and to adapt and validate them for diverse languages and cultures to facilitate the replication of quantitative studies. The objective of the present research was twofol

Estimated effect of reduced asymptomatic testing on missed Chlamydia trachomatis detections among women and heterosexual men in the Netherlands: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Widespread testing for asymptomatic chlamydia is under debate. In the Netherlands, from 2025, Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) testing at Centers for Sexual Health (CSH) is indicated only for individuals with symptoms or partner notification. We aimed to quantify the potential impact of the new guideline on CT tests and detections for women and heterosexual men. METHODS: We included consultations of women and heterosexual men (≥16 years) tested for CT at the CSH Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 2015-2023. We assessed consultations where no test would have been performed under the new guideli

Use of "Strengthening Our Vows" Video Intervention to Encourage Negotiated Explicit Sexual Agreements in Zambian Heterosexual HIV Seroconcordant-Negative Couples.

Negotiating sexual agreements in combination with couples' voluntary HIV counseling and testing (CVCT) may help further reduce HIV transmission in Zambian concordant HIV-negative couples (CNC). Though CVCT has been shown to reduce HIV transmission in CNC by 47%, approximately half of residual infections occur in this group. We developed a "Strengthening Our Vows" video session to foster communication and negotiation of explicit sexual agreements to reduce concurrent sexual exposures and prevent HIV transmission to the spouse due to unprotected, extramarital sex. CNC were recruited through CVCT

Quality of Life and Mental Health of Chinese Sexual and Gender Minority Women and Cisgender Heterosexual Women: Cross-sectional Survey and Mediation Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health-related research on sexual minority populations in China is lacking, and research on sexual and gender minority women (SGMW, including transgender women and persons of other gender identities assigned female at birth of all sexual orientations, and cisgender women with nonheterosexual orientations) is even less. Currently, there are limited surveys related to mental health in Chinese SGMW, but there are no studies on their quality of life (QOL), no studies comparing the QOL of SGMW with that of cisgender heterosexual women (CHW), and no studies on the relationship between se
