Poststroke Impairment and Recovery Are Predicted by Task-Specific Regionalization of Injury.

Lesion size and location affect the magnitude of impairment and recovery following stroke, but the precise relationship between these variab … volume and its likelihood of including the caudal forelimb area (CFA), rostral forelimb area (RFA), hindlimb (HL) cortex (based on intracranial microstimulation), or their bordering regions were related to both impairment and recovery. Severity of impairment on each task was best predicted by injury in unique regions: impaired reaching, by damage in voxels …

Primate limb bones and locomotor types in arboreal or terrestrial environments.

Postcranial limb bones were compared among primates of different locomotor types. Seventy-one primate species, in which all families of prim … ng all quadrupedal mammals. The degree of arboreality in daily life is connected with the degree of hindlimb dominance, or the ratio of force applied to the fore- and hindlimb in positional behaviour and also with the shape, size and robusticity of limb bones.

Myelinated afferent fiber types that become spontaneously active and mechanosensitive following nerve transection in the rat.

It is difficult to know which afferent types preferentially develop ectopic firing characteristics following nerve injury because axotomy disconnects the sensory receptor ending from the remainder of the afferent neuron. We compared the prevalence of ectopic firing originating in nerve-end neuromas of nerves serving muscle and skin in the rat. Spontaneous firing was much more prevalent in the injured medial gastrocnemius nerve, a hindlimb muscle nerve, than in the saphenous and sural nerves which primarily innervate hindlimb skin. Ectopic mechanosensitivity, on the other hand, was more promine…

Monkey performance: the development of bipedalism in trained Japanese monkeys.

A series of studies collaborated by the Suo-sarumawashi (Japanese Monkey Performance) revealed the potential for bipedalism in Japanese monk … ngth of bones and relatively large articular dimensions. Despite such adaptations, modifications of hindlimb bones were rather distinctive from humans' condition. This indicates a compromise between functional necessity and genetically determined anatomy. The hindlimb of Japanese monkey seemed to be more specialized for quadrupedal locomotion in many aspec …

Do respiratory neurons control female receptive behavior: a suggested role for a medullary central pattern generator?

Nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) consists of a column of neurons in the caudal medulla with crossed descending axons that terminate in almost all spinal segments. Many of these neurons transmit the drive for expiratory movements to the spinal cord. The same neurons are also known to participate, however, in other motor acts, such as vomiting and abdominal straining, for which it appears that the medullary circuits controlling the respiratory pattern are reconfigured. Plasticity in projections from the NRA to hindlimb motor nuclei provides evidence that some of these projections are involved in yet …

Polydactyly Nagoya, Pdn: A new mutant gene in the mouse.

A new hereditary polydactyly (gene symbol Pdn) was found in the course of breeding JCL : ICR mice. The genetic analysis indicated that the polydactyly was an autosomal dominant trait. The homozygotes died within two days after birth. The homozygous fetuses or newborn had 1-3 extra-digits both in te fore- and hindlimbs on the preaxial side. They occasionally showed exencephaly, cleft palate, open eyelid, short tibia and fibula or deformed sternum. The heterozygotes had one extra-digit preaxial side. They occasionally showed exencephaly, heterozygotes had one extra-digit preaxially in the hindli…

Perivascular cell-specific knockout of the stem cell pluripotency gene Oct4 inhibits angiogenesis.

The stem cell pluripotency factor Oct4 serves a critical protective role during atherosclerotic plaque development by promoting smooth muscl … of Oct4 in perivascular cells also impairs perfusion recovery and decreases angiogenesis following hindlimb ischemia. Transcriptomic analyses demonstrate that expression of the migratory gene Slit3 is reduced following loss of Oct4 in cultured SMCs, and in Oct4-deficient perivascular cells in ischemic hindlimb muscle. Together, these results provide evide …

Absence of a major role for the snai1 and snai3 genes in regulating skeletal muscle regeneration in mice.

The Snail gene family encodes DNA-binding zinc finger proteins that function as transcriptional repressors. While the Snai1 and Snai2 genes are required for normal development in mice, Snai3 mutant mice exhibit no obvious abnormalities. The Snai3 gene is expressed at high levels in skeletal muscle. However, we demonstrate by histological analysis that Snai3 null mutant mice exhibit normal skeletal muscle. During hindlimb muscle regeneration after cardiotoxin-mediated injury, the Snai3 null mice exhibited efficient regeneration. To determine whether the Snai3 gene functions redundantly with the…

Human retinal pigment epithelial cell implants ameliorate motor deficits in two rat models of Parkinson disease.

Intrastriatal transplantation of gelatin microcarrier-attached human retinal pigment epithelial cells (hRPE-GM) may represent an alternative source for cell therapy in Parkinson disease (PD). The use of human retinal pigment epithelial (hRPE) cells in PD relies on the capacity of these cells to produce l-dopa as an intermediate product in the eumelanin synthesis pathway. We investigated the behavioral effects of hRPE-GM implants on forelimb use asymmetries and hindlimb motor deficits in unilateral and bilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) rat models of PD. We report that intrastriatal unilatera…

Intermittent maternofetal oxygenation during late gestation improved birthweight, neonatal growth, body symmetry, and muscle metabolism in intrauterine growth-restricted lambs.

All lambs were weaned at birth, hand-reared, and fitted with hindlimb catheters at day 25. Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) and hindlimb hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp (HEC) studies were performed at days 28 and 29, respectively. At day 30, lambs were euthanized and ex vivo HEC studies were performed on …

miR-548j-5p regulates angiogenesis in peripheral artery disease.

Our results demonstrated that circulating miR-548j-5p was significantly reduced in patients with PAD as compared with the controls. miR-548j-5p promoted EPC angiogenesis by enhancing migration and tube formation. Assessment of environmental stressors potentially responsible for malformations in North American anuran amphibians.

Several species of anuran amphibians from different regions across North America have recently exhibited an increased occurrence of malformations, predominantly of the hindlimb. Research concerning the potential causes of these malformations has focused extensively on three stressors: chemical contaminants, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and parasitic trematodes. In this overview of recent work with each of these stressors, we assess their plausibility as contributors to the malformations observed in field-collected amphibians. There is as yet little evidence that chemical contaminants are respon…

Functional evolution of jumping in frogs: Interspecific differences in take-off and landing.

Ancestral frogs underwent anatomical shifts including elongation of the hindlimbs and pelvis and reduction of the tail and vertebral column that heralded the transition to jumping as a primary mode of locomotion. Jumping has been hypothesized to have evolved in a step-wise fashion with basal frogs taking-off with synchronous hindlimb extension and crash-landing on their bodies, and then their limbs move forward. Subsequently, frogs began to recycle the forelimbs forward earlier in the jump to control landing. Frogs with forelimb landing radiated into many forms, locomotor modes, habitats, and …
