Pathogenesis of AIDS--related Kaposi's sarcoma.

The occurrence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in patients with HIV infection is more than 7,000 times higher than in the non-HIV infected population. The reason for this association is unclear but may involve decreased immune surveillance as a result of the profound cellular immune deficiency caused by HIV, a sexually transmitted KS-inducing virus, whose KS-transforming capabilities may be enhanced by HIV, or a direct or indirect effect of HIV itself in susceptible individuals. Over the last few years, advances have been made in our understanding of the pathogenesis of this tumor, and several models

Counselling and selection of homosexual couples in fertility treatment.

Artificial insemination with anonymous donor sperm (AID) is a widespread practice for heterosexual couples in which the male partner appears to be infertile. The Centre for Reproductive Medicine of the Brussels University teaching hospital has been one of the first to extend this form of therapy to lesbian couples. In the course of the past 7 years, 27 lesbian couples have come to the centre with a request for AID. The question of whether children can be brought up within such a frame of reference cannot be dissociated from the question of attitudes towards homosexuality as such. Such attitude

Comparing the Outcomes of In-Vitro Fertilization in Same-Sex Female Couples Using Their Partner's Egg Versus Their Own Egg: A Systematic Review.

Reciprocal IVF (or co-IVF) is increasingly a reproductive option for same-sex female couples. No systematic reviews have compared outcomes of co-IVF using a partner's egg to IVF with own egg. This systematic review determined outcomes of mother and child comparing co-IVF, and IVF with own egg (single, heterosexual, lesbian, trans men), reported using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Databases including Embase, Medline, PsycInfo, Scopus, Cochrane were searched to November 2024. Inclusion, extraction, and quality assessment were conducted by

Notes on growing love: Cherríe Moraga's "If," a world-making incantation conjuring collective consciousness through Chicana lesbian po(i)esis.

This essay introduces the embodied ceremonial practices of deep presence and sustained attentiveness as Chicana lesbian poetic devices that shape-shift Chicana lesbian subjectivities, socialities, and simultaneously the violence of colonial capitalist racial heteropatriarchies. My reading of the poem "If" in Carla Trujillo's rendering of Chicana lesbian desire in Chicana Lesbians: The Girls Our Mothers Warned Us About, delves into the shape-shifting and time-bending potentiation at the heart of Chicana lesbian poetics. Cherríe Moraga's "If" generously offers a map that stalls time with the mag

LGBTQ+ Grassroots Activism: An Opportunity for Resilience.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other gender and sexual minority (LGBTQ+) individuals have a long history of mobilizing to raise awareness and initiate social and political change for LGBTQ+ related issues. The present study explored how grassroots activism impacted resilience among LGBTQ+ people. In-depth and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 LGBTQ+ activists from one statewide grassroots organization aiming to ban conversion therapy. Grounded theory analysis was used to identify a central theme and six interrelated subthemes. The central theme was that outness

Identity and pregnancy in conflict?: an examination of sexual minority women using qualitative description.

While there is growing documentation of pregnancy among sexual minority women, little research has focused on their perceptions and experiences of conflict between sexual minority identity and pregnancy. Because of this, this study used Social Identity Theory and qualitative descriptive analysis to explore the following questions: do sexual minority women perceive sexual minority identity and pregnancy as in conflict; and if so, from where does this conflict arise and how do sexual minority women experience it? Participants included 21 lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer and other non-heterosexual c

Strengthening Equity and Inclusion in Urban Greenspace: Interrogating the Moral Management & Policing of 2SLGBTQ+ Communities in Toronto Parks.

There is growing recognition that greenspace provides invaluable benefits to health and wellbeing, and is essential infrastructure for promoting both social and environmental sustainability in urban settings. This paper contributes towards efforts to build 'just' and equitable urban sustainability, and more specifically greenspace management, by drawing attention to hostility and exclusion experienced by two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, genderqueer, pansexual, transsexual, intersex and gender-variant (2SLGBTQ+) park occupants. There is evidence that access to greenspace

"Erase/rewind": How transgender Twitter discourses challenge and (re)politicize lesbian identities.

Competing views on the in/compatibility of transgender status and lesbian identity is a source of conflict in the ongoing antagonism over transgender recognition. Many individuals with different transgender identities might lay claim to lesbian identity or lesbian discourse(s) more generally. However, this inclusion has been disputed in some circles insofar as it is seen to challenge or contradict characteristics of lesbianism. This paper explores how transgender discourses might challenge and (re)politicize lesbianism and lesbian identities. Given that social media platforms concentrate minor

Medical, Nonmedical, and Illegal Stimulant Use by Sexual Identity and Gender.

INTRODUCTION: Major knowledge gaps regarding medical and nonmedical prescription stimulant use and illegal stimulant use (i.e., cocaine/crack/methamphetamine) by sexual identity and gender have implications for individuals' health and well-being. This study improves stimulant use measurement by differentiating the type of stimulant use and focusing on lesbian, gay, and bisexual subpopulations. METHODS: Data were pooled for adults in the 2015-2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (n=126,463; analyzed in 2019). Gender-stratified logistic regression models examined associations between sex

Opioid-Related Disparities in Sexual Minority Youth, 2017.

OBJECTIVES: In light of the opioid epidemic, it is essential to understand which subgroups of youth are at elevated risk for opioid use. Sexual minority groups have increased rates of substance use compared to heterosexual youth. Our study aims to examine the prevalence of both prescription opioid misuse and heroin use in adolescents. We then examine odds of prescription opioid misuse and heroin use adjusting for common covariates. METHODS: Using 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System data, we examined lifetime odds of prescription opioid misuse and heroin use among sexual minority yout

Queer reproduction revisited and why race, class and citizenship still matters: A response to Cristina Richie.

In the dialogue between Timothy F. Murphy and Cristina Richie about queer bioethics and queer reproduction in this journal, significant points of the emergent and extremely important discussions on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and queer bioethics are raised. Richie specifies correctly that queer bioethics can either complement or contradict LGBT bioethics and the queer standpoint against heteroconformity and heterofuturity is decisive here. As the field of queer bioethics is such a recent and essential part of consideration for bioethics and as it is still evolving, the objective

Ancestors of two-spirits: Historical depictions of Native North American gender-crossing women through critical discourse analysis.

Letters written by Christian men of European origin during the sixteenth-nineteenth centuries contain brief descriptions of gender-crossing individuals among indigenous Americans. Although now considered ethnocentrically biased because of the etic positioning of their authors, these historical sources are invaluable because they offer a glimpse of the ancestors of modern-day two-spirits. An application of critical discourse analysis to three depictions of gender-crossing females from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries demonstrates that such women were favorably portrayed. These results di

More than surface tension: femmes in families.

This article raises questions about the lack of scholarly focus on butch/femme couples and their absence in studies of lesbian couples and family-building. In an era of lesbian marriage and lesbian parenting, femme and butch coupling and family-building remain unspoken topics within family studies, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT)-specific research. Moving beyond a focus on eroticism within the femme/butch couple, questions about how gender expression impacts other relationships dynamics, including the maintenance of long-term relationships, power and intimacy, domestic cho

Counselling lesbian couples: requests for donor insemination on social grounds.

Fertility centres are increasingly involved in dealing with requests from lesbian couples for donor insemination (DI). Data were collected on 95 Belgian lesbian couples who applied for DI. The majority of couples were well integrated in a social environment (family, friends and work) that consisted mainly of heterosexuals. They tended to be open about their homosexuality and most couples considered the social environment to be tolerant towards their homosexual orientation. Couples who considered alternatives to DI would have liked to have had more information on the donor and were more incline
