Taeniasis, cysticercosis and echinococcosis/hydatidosis in Nigeria: I--prevalence of human taeniasis, cysticercosis and hydatidosis based on a retrospective analysis of hospital records.

A retrospective analysis of hospital records in 3 ecological zones of Nigeria was carried out to ascertain the prevalence of human taeniasis, cysticercosis and hydatidosis. The prevalence of Taenia infection in Sudan, Bauchi Plateau and Northern Guinea zones was 0.9%, 0.6% and 0.6%, respectively. The prevalence of human taeniasis by age and sex in the 3 ecological zones indicates that males were more often infected. Because males by habit eat more "suya" (half-grilled beef) than females, they are more likely to be exposed to Taenia saginata cysts. As for age factor, Taenia infection was more c…

Enhancing the Quality of Surgical Documentation Through the Surgical Tool for Auditing Records (STAR): Experience From a Tertiary Care Hospital in South Asia.

Background Effective record-keeping is crucial for safe surgical care worldwide. While structured tools for auditing records exist, evidence from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains limited. This study was conducted to uphold the standard of surgical record-keeping in a tertiary care center in Sri Lanka using the Surgical Tool for Auditing Records (STAR). Methods This prospective, descriptive closed-loop audit included 92 patient records, 44 from Cycle 1 (April 1-14, 2024) and 48 from Cycle 2 (April 15-28, 2024). The evaluation was conducted using the STAR, which assesses document

Assessing the accuracy of the International Classification of Disease (ICD) framework in the identification of patients with chronic subdural haematoma from hospital records.

BACKGROUND: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is one of the commonest neurosurgical pathologies with an increasing incidence. Observational studies of routine care have demonstrated high perioperative morbidity and approximately 10% mortality at one year. The development, implementation, and evaluation of a potential care framework relies on an accurate and reproducible method of case identification and case ascertainment. With this manuscript, we report on the accuracy of diagnostic ICD codes for identifying patients with CSDH from retrospective electronic data and explore whether basic demogr

Prevalence and predictors of medication-related emergency department visit in older adults: A multicenter study linking national claim database and hospital medical records.

Objectives: Older adults are more likely to experience drug-related problems (DRP), which could lead to medication-related emergency department visits (MRED). To properly evaluate MRED, the entire history of drug use should be evaluated in a structured manner. However, limited studies have identified MRED with complete prescription records. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of MRED among community-dwelling older patients by linking national claims data and electronic medical records using a standardized medication related admission identification method. Methods: We included

Sickle cell disease is associated with decreased HIV but higher HBV and HCV comorbidities in U.S. hospital discharge records: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Some studies suggest that HIV infection progresses slowly in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). The authors aimed to determine the relationships between SCD and HIV infection. METHODS: National Hospital Discharge Survey data from adult African-Americans in the period of 1997-2009 were analysed. The comorbidities of SCD with HIV infections in hospital discharges were analysed. Multiple logistic regression was used to test the association between SCD and HIV. For comparative purposes, the relationships of SCD with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) were also as
