The Czech Bill on palliative care, end-of-life decision-making, and euthanasia in light of Belgian legislative experience.

In 2024, a Bill "On Palliative Care, End-of-Life Decision-Making and Euthanasia" was submitted to the Czech Parliament for consideration. This article evaluates the Bill through doctrinal and ethico-legal analysis and a comparative perspective centred on Belgium, whose model influenced the Czech proposal. The Bill is unusual in combining, within one statute, conventional end-of-life practices - palliative care, withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, and palliative sedation - and "assisted death", covering euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. With regard to conventional p

The impact of stigma on people with albinism in Africa: a narrative review.

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a recessively inherited condition which affects about 1 in 5,000 people in Africa. The depigmentation of the skin and hair is very striking, unusual and unexpected, and stigmatisation has been ongoing for centuries. This narrative review asked: How does stigma related to OCA manifest in African settings, what drives it, what impacts does it have across health, education, psychosocial well-being and human rights, and what interventions have been proposed or implemented to reduce harm? The review was conducted using searches of PubMed and Google Scholar (up to Ju…

Domestic violence and associated factors among pregnant women in sub-Saharan African countries from the recent demographic and health survey data: a multilevel analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a human rights violation that often involves violence against women, which appears to be the most prevalent type of abuse. IPV is a global public health issue with major human rights violations. Pregnant women's IPV needs special consideration because of the possible harm that might happen to mothers and their fetuses. The enormous global public health issue of IPV affects physical, mental, and sexual transgressions. Even though there were studies conducted on IPV among women, few studies were conducted among pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa…

The capacity to consent to sex in mental health inpatient units.

OBJECTIVE: Discussions of capacity to consent in mental health care usually revolve around capacity to consent to treatment. This paper instead explores the issue of capacity to consent to sexual activity in a mental health inpatient setting as a way of exploring capacity from a different perspective. This is not a purely theoretical exercise, with both consensual sexual activity and sexual assault commonplace in mental health inpatient units, current policy and practice approaches are clearly not working and require re-examination. METHODS: Four key frameworks are explored: human rights law,…

Next steps for meeting the needs of people with severe mental illness in low- and middle-income countries.

The explicit inclusion of mental health within the Sustainable Development Goals is a welcome development, borne out of powerful advocacy using public health, economic and human rights arguments. As funding comes on line for scale-up of evidence-based mental health care by task-sharing with primary care, it is time to take stock about care for people affected by severe mental illness (SMI). The existing evidence base for task shared care for SMI provides an imperative to get started, but is skewed towards relatively more affluent and urban populations in middle-income countries where specialis…

The true cost of maternal death: individual tragedy impacts family, community and nations.

The death of a woman in pregnancy and childbirth is globally considered an individual tragedy and a human rights violation. Given the inequities in death that occur to marginalized, poor, and vulnerable women in low and middle income countries, there is no doubt that maternal death is a horrific injustice. However, the long term global burden of disease goes far beyond this tragedy. Recent research is demonstrating that there are disastrous consequences in infant and child mortality, loss of economic opportunities, spiraling cycles of poverty in the families and communities where women die giv…

Associations Among Interparental Violence, Maternal Depression and Behavioural Difficulties in Preschool-Aged Children in Jamaica.

To spotlight women's and children's mental health needs and human rights issues around interparental violence in Caribbean families, this study examined the mediating function of maternal depressive symptoms on associations between interparental violence and children's anxiety/depression, antisocial behaviours, and peer problems. Participants included 152 mothers and their preschool-aged children residing in the Kingston area of Jamaica. Interparental violence had direct associations with children's antisocial behaviours and peer problems. Maternal depressive symptoms partially mediated the as…

What makes a real man? Gender norms and Western Australia v. AH [2010] WASCA 172.

In Western Australia v AH [2010] WASCA 172 the Western Australian Court of Appeal denied two female-to-male applicants for gender reassignment certificates the right to be legally recognised as men. In so doing, an opportunity was lost for Australia to be one of the first jurisdictions in the world to legally provide a reassignment of gender without requiring permanent sterilising surgery. This column examines not only the legal issues considered in the case but the broader ethical and human rights issues associated with denying female-to-male gender reassignment applicants who have not underg…

From promoting healthy masculinities to nurturing healthy humans and societies: Commentary on Di Bianca and Mahalik (2022).

To extend the insightful points articulated by Di Bianca and Mahalik (2022), I bring into focus the landmark contributions of Carol Gilligan whose large body of scholarship (1982, 1993, 1995, 2011; Gilligan et al., 1990) on human development in a patriarchal society is largely overlooked in the present article. Gilligan's critique of patriarchy, power, and inequality in science and society pushes us to center the cultural ideological context in this conversation, which extends beyond boys and men and masculinity. Our efforts to promote healthy masculinities must coincide with (re)structuring s

The management of severely malformed newborn infants: the case of conjoined twins.

The birth of 'Siamese' twins in August 2000 whose parents refused to consent to surgery for separation required English courts to decide whether the twins could lawfully be separated despite that refusal when one twin would certainly die as a direct surgical result. The Court of Appeal unanimously upheld the trial judge's decision to authorize surgery, taking account of principles of family law, criminal law and human rights law. Parental duties to the viable twin were found consistent with the justification of allowing, without intending, natural death of the non-viable twin. The right to hum…

The Right to Food and the Planetary Boundaries framework.

The 'Right to Food' is a legal entitlement owed to all human beings established in international law more than half a century ago. Fulfilment of the right has been entrusted to states parties to the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). However, in practice, the right is often breached because of hostility or indifference from individuals or institutions refusing access to provisions, or because of vicissitudes of nature. Adverse impacts due to human interference in natural processes are increasingly noticeable in the area of food production. These proce

Reforming the insanity defence in Ireland to comply with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is the first human rights treaty of this century. It aims to ensure that persons with disabilities have full and effective inclusion in society and are not the subjects of discrimination. Support for the CRPD was unprecedented, attracting widespread approval from states in all regions, and achieving the highest number of signatories to a UN Convention on its opening day. Whilst most of its provisions have been welcomed, the interpretation of several key articles by UN bodies has led to some unanticipated issues of …

Prevalence, risk factors, and impact of sexual abuse among children with disabilities in Asian countries: A scoping review of three decades (1995-2025).

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a critical human rights violation. Children with disabilities (CWD) face a 4 to 10 times higher risk due to dependency and communication barriers, yet evidence from Asian sociocultural contexts remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to map the prevalence, risk factors, and impacts of CSA among CWD in Asia. METHODS: Guided by PRISMA-ScR, a systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, ERIC, and Medline (1995-2025). Quantitative and qualitative studies involving children aged ≤18 were analyzed, ide…
