Exploring specific alterations at the explicit and perceptual levels in sense of ownership, agency, and body schema in Functional Motor Disorder: A pilot comparative study with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Functional Motor Disorders (FMD) consists in symptoms of altered motor function not attributable to typical neurological and medical conditions. This study aimed to explore explicit and perceptual measures of Sense of Ownership, Agency, and Body Schema in FMD patients, and assess whether these alterations are specific to FMD or shared with other functional disturbances. Twelve FMD patients, ten with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS, a functional gastrointestinal disorder) and fifteen healthy controls (HC) underwent: (i) the Mirror Box Illusion (MBI), requiring participants to perform tapping move

The tangled threads: Unveiling the interplay between the sense of body ownership and the sense of agency in impacting the bodily-self representation in eating disorders.

The feeling of owning a body (body ownership) and controlling its actions (sense of agency) contributes to the emergence of the bodily-self representation, whose alteration is at the root of the central psychopathology of Eating Disorders (EDs). Yet, studies addressing these aspects in EDs provided inconsistent results. Here, we simultaneously test body ownership and sense of agency in EDs compared to controls by exploiting different rubber hand illusion (RHI) paradigms (i.e., classic visuo-tactile, passive and active visuo-motor versions). In any RHI versions, no differences in the susceptibi

The influence of tDCS on perceived bouncing/streaming.

Processing ambiguous situations is a constant challenge in everyday life and sensory input from different modalities needs to be integrated to form a coherent mental representation on the environment. The bouncing/streaming illusion can be studied to provide insights into the ambiguous perception and processing of multi-modal environments. In short, the likelihood of reporting bouncing rather than streaming impressions increases when a sound coincides with the moment of overlap between two moving disks. Neuroimaging studies revealed that the right posterior parietal cortex is crucial in cross-

Gambling and Alcohol Problems during the College Years: Personality, Physical and Emotional Health and Gambling Beliefs.

Gambling and alcohol problems commonly co-occur during emerging adulthood. Co-occurring problems may relates to personality factors, physical health, mental health and gambling belief systems. In a large sample of colleges students (N = 513), we examined alcohol, gambling and co-occurring problem groups relative to a group without alcohol or gambling problems from large sample of college students. Group differences were found on Constraint and Negative Emotionality (ps ≤ .05). All three groups had a higher score on gamblers' beliefs of illusion of control compared to the group with no problems

Scratch Card Near-Miss Outcomes Increase the Urge to Gamble, but Do Not Impact Further Gambling Behaviour: A Pre-registered Replication and Extension.

Scratch card near-misses, outcomes in which two out of three required jackpot symbols are uncovered, have been shown to erroneously increase the urge to continue gambling. It remains unknown if and how these outcomes influence further gambling behaviour. Previous studies examining the influence of near-misses on purchasing behaviour offered a low-stakes gamble to participants after experiencing a near-miss or a regular loss. We sought to investigate the influence of these outcomes on scratch card purchasing behaviour with a stronger test of participants' gambling behavior by having them either

Self- and other-agency in people with passivity (first rank) symptoms in schizophrenia.

Individuals with passivity (first-rank) symptoms report that their actions, thoughts and sensations are influenced or controlled by an external (non-self) agent. Passivity symptoms are closely linked to schizophrenia and related disorders yet they remain poorly understood. One dominant framework posits a role for deficits in the sense of agency. An important question is whether deficits in self-agency can be differentiated from other-agency in schizophrenia and passivity symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate self- and other-agency in 51 people with schizophrenia (n=20 current, 10 past, 21 no

Striatal connectivity changes following gambling wins and near-misses: Associations with gambling severity.

Frontostriatal circuitry is implicated in the cognitive distortions associated with gambling behaviour. 'Near-miss' events, where unsuccessful outcomes are proximal to a jackpot win, recruit overlapping neural circuitry with actual monetary wins. Personal control over a gamble (e.g., via choice) is also known to increase confidence in one's chances of winning (the 'illusion of control'). Using psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analyses, we examined changes in functional connectivity as regular gamblers and non-gambling participants played a slot-machine game that delivered wins, near-misse

[The European Evaluation of Vertigo (EEV) scale: a clinical validation study].

Up until now, the questionnaires used to evaluate vertigo have been self-administered questionnaires that rate either symptoms and/or their consequences. In contrast, the European Evaluation of Vertigo scale (EEV) is a physician-administered questionnaire that only assesses symptoms of the vestibular syndrome: illusion of movement, duration of illusion, motion intolerance, neurovegetative signs, and instability. Twenty-six ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists participated in this validation study conducted among 123 patients suffering from different types of vertigo. The reliability, respon

Evidence for dissociable representations for body image and body schema from a patient with visual neglect.

The existence of independent and dissociable representations of the body within the brain for perception (body image) and action (body schema) is currently under debate. Although demonstrations in which fake limbs are incorporated into the body image but not body schema are commonplace, such findings can be explained due to the strength of the illusion rather than autonomous representations. The current study, however, offers striking evidence in favor of a clear dissociation in a patient with visual neglect, such that different fake limbs were incorporated into the body image and body schema

Correction of congenitally missing lateral incisors with porcelain veneers.

The ability of the dental professional to improve a patient's smile has become a benchmark in modern aesthetic dentistry. When one type of tooth is transformed into another through the restorative process, special care must be taken to ensure correct preparation and gingival contours to create the illusion that the teeth are in their correct position. With accurate digital photographic planning, active patient consultation, detailed tooth preparation, and a meticulous laboratory sequence, porcelain laminate veneers can be functional and can achieve the aesthetic expectations of the patient.

Impact of Visual Feedback Configurations in a Task-Oriented Immersive Virtual Reality Mirror Therapy.

Mirror Therapy is a form of upper limb therapy in stroke, which consists on showing the mirrored symmetric movement of the unimpaired side using a mirror placed in the medial sagittal plane. The illusion of movement corresponding to the impaired extremity could facilitate neuroplasticity, and assists patients in regaining certain lost motor functions. Recent studies have shown the potential and benefit of translating this effective therapy in an immersive virtual reality (VR) environment, using head mounted display and hand tracking systems. This work investigates the feasibility to use myoele

What déjà vu and the "dreamy state" tell us about episodic memory networks.

Illusions of inappropriate familiarity with the current experience or hallucinatory recall of memories are reported in temporal lobe seizures. Pathophysiological hypotheses have been proposed, involving temporal limbic regions (Hughlings-Jackson), temporal neocortex ("interpretive cortex", Penfield), or both (Bancaud). Recent data acquired from presurgical investigations using intracerebral electrode recordings, demonstrate a critical role for the sub- and para-hippocampal cortices. From this, a novel hypothesis of cortico-limbic networks emerged: déjà-vu results from an abnormal synchronizati…

Heightened perception of illusory motion is associated with symptom severity in schizophrenia patients.

Abnormal perceptual processing in schizophrenia may contribute to the development of positive symptoms such as hallucinations. Experimental findings suggest that such abnormalities result from impaired processing of local signals into complex cortical representations. Because complex processing is needed to generate the perception of illusory motion from local signals, deteriorated perception of illusory motion would be expected in schizophrenia. However, findings are mixed, and the relationship between complex motion processing and symptoms is unclear. Illusions with multiple flow components …

Neural Correlates of Enhanced Audiovisual Processing in the Bilingual Brain.

Bilingualism is associated with enhancements in perceptual and cognitive processing necessary for juggling multiple languages. Recent psychophysical studies demonstrate bilinguals also show enhanced multisensory processing and more restricted temporal binding windows for integrating audiovisual information. Here, we probed the neural mechanisms of bilinguals' audiovisual benefits. We recorded neuroelectric responses in mono- and bi-lingual listeners to the double-flash paradigm in which auditory beeps concurrent with a single visual flash induces the perceptual illusion of multiple flashes. Face processing in autism: Reduced integration of cross-feature dynamics.

Characteristic problems with social interaction have prompted considerable interest in the face processing of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Studies suggest that reduced integration of information from disparate facial regions likely contributes to difficulties recognizing static faces in this population. Recent work also indicates that observers with ASD have problems using patterns of facial motion to judge identity and gender, and may be less able to derive global motion percepts. These findings raise the possibility that feature integration deficits also impact the percep

The perception of three-dimensional cast-shadow structure is dependent on visual awareness.

In the present study we examined whether the perception of depth from cast shadows is dependent on visual awareness using continuous flash suppression (CFS). As a direct measure of how the visual system infers depth from cast shadows, we examined the cast-shadow motion illusion originally reported by Kersten, Knill, Mamassian, and Bulthoff (1996), in which a moving cast shadow induces illusory motion in depth in a physically stationary object. In Experiment 1, we used a disparity defined probe to determine the stereo motion speed required to match the cast-shadow motion illusion for different

Out-of-body-induced hippocampal amnesia.

Theoretical models have suggested an association between the ongoing experience of the world from the perspective of one's own body and hippocampus-based episodic memory. This link has been supported by clinical reports of long-term episodic memory impairments in psychiatric conditions with dissociative symptoms, in which individuals feel detached from themselves as if having an out-of-body experience. Here, we introduce an experimental approach to examine the necessary role of perceiving the world from the perspective of one's own body for the successful episodic encoding of real-life events.

[Acute peri-traumatic dissociative experiences: assessment and course].

Previous research has identified acute stress symptoms, particularly peri-traumatic dissociative symptoms (the distortion of consciousness, depersonalization, derealization, automatic movements, flashbacks with illusions or hallucinations), as risk factors for the development of later posttraumatic stress disorder. Numerous retrospective assessments and current prospective studies confirm these findings. It is suggested that peri-traumatic dissociation be assessed immediately after traumatic exposure and during the weeks following. But traumatized victims may present other categories of acute …

Warning and contextual mechanisms in the illusory truth effect.

The illusory truth effect refers to the tendency to judge repeated statements as more credible than novel ones. Although this effect is commonly attributed to processing fluency arising from prior exposure, increasing evidence suggests that non-experiential factors also shape credibility judgments. Here we examined whether two non-experiential factors, explicit warnings and implicit contextual cues, modulate the illusory truth effect. Across three online experiments using a standard truth-by-repetition paradigm, participants rated the credibility of repeated and new statements referring to gen
