Cells of Amycolatopsis mediterranei CBS 42575 were immobilized on glass wool for the production of rifamycins B and SV. Glass wool (CORNING type) of 8 microns in diameter has a better entrapment capacity for microbial cells of microorganism than the other types of glass wool used. The most suitable amount of glass wool was 0.8 g/50 ml. The best initial cell concentration used as inoculum was 40 mg cells/50 ml. Local treatment of inflammation by continuous introduction of the drug on the sorbent matrix is supposed to be an ideal method as it warrants prolonged supply with the drug administered in a single dose. Such treatment was given to 77 patients suffering from acute and chronic otitis media. The follow-up results show the sorbent to reduce the tissue inflammation and exudation within the initial 5-10 hours. Perforation closes much more promptly than in other treatments for acute and recurrent otitis media.

Repetitively immobilized rats (3 hr/day, 4 weeks) exhibited less increase in the colonic temperature during acute heat exposure at 38 degrees C for 60 min. The magnitude of increase in oxygen consumption during heat exposure did not differ between the controls and the stressed rats. The results suggest that an immobilization stress could develop cross adaptation to heat, possibly by means of enhanced heat dissipating capacity.

A simple one-step technique for the analysis of nucleotide composition of oligodeoxyribonucleotides is described. The method is based on enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequent separation of hydrolysate on a "combined" column with Aminex A 28 anionite, on which top immobilyzed on DEAE cellulose snake venom phosphodiesterase is layed. The method is tested using a number of synthetic di- and tri-deoxyribonucleotides.
